Coop’s lattice ran the models overnight.

Raven found him in the Formation Hall at dawn — same place, same posture, same burnt-copper smell from the wired-together detection arrays. He looked like he’d aged a year in twelve hours, which for an eighty-four-year-old Cognitect running substrate degradation models at full lattice capacity was roughly equivalent to a normal person pulling an all-nighter.

"Give me the numbers," she said.

"She wasn’t lying. Not entirely." He pulled up the display. Two curves — one for each scenario the creature had described. "Campaign continues: substrate degradation accelerates. She’s right about the mechanism. Restricting the operative energy supply forces greater draw from the ley-line substrate. The more we starve the secondary pipeline, the harder the door pulls from the primary."

"How much acceleration?"

"Less than she claimed. Her timeline of twenty-six months to door completion with substrate collapse BEFORE opening — that’s the upper bound. Worst case. She was selling the scariest version." He adjusted the display. "My model puts the realistic range at twenty to twenty-four months to completion, with substrate degradation reaching critical somewhere between eighteen and thirty months."

"So the door might open before the substrate collapses."

"Or after. The uncertainty window is twelve months wide — too broad to predict which happens first. But the trend is clear." He pulled up a third overlay — the rate of change. "More concerning than the absolute numbers is the acceleration curve. Each month of campaign adds incrementally more stress than the month before. The relationship isn’t linear — it’s exponential in the late stages. Which means the last few months before critical are the most dangerous."

"Define dangerous."

"The substrate reaches a threshold where small additional stress causes disproportionate damage. Like ice on a lake — you can walk across it all winter, and then one warm afternoon the whole sheet cracks at once. The erosion accumulates invisibly until the fabric hits its structural limit, and then everything fails simultaneously."

"The Accord channels. The dimensional protections. Hades’s architecture."

"All of it. At once. Not a gradual degradation — a catastrophic collapse. And the creature knows this. That’s why her timeline was so specific. Fourteen months at natural pace keeps the substrate above the threshold. Twenty-six months with full campaign doesn’t."

"And?"

"Manageable. Barely. If we make one change."

"Stop targeting nodes," Coop said. "The node disruption puts massive localized stress on the substrate. Every time we destroy a cluster, the creature redirects repair energy through the ley lines, pulling harder on the fabric than the door’s normal construction does. The node campaign is the accelerant. Not the operative extractions."

"The operative campaign stays."

"The operative campaign is the scalpel. Each extraction is a tiny reduction in the energy pipeline — individually negligible, cumulatively significant, and critically: it doesn’t increase the substrate draw. The creature compensates for lost operatives by adjusting the distribution, not by pulling harder on the ley lines. The energy loss is absorbed, not replaced."
