Chapter 493: Chapter 492: First Strike
Location:Growth Zone — Zone 2, Southeastern PerimeterDate/Time:TC1856.02.05 (01:00 – 03:30)
Taron chose the southeastern insertion point because nobody who lived had ever used it.
The growth zone’s perimeter was two hundred and six square kilometers of living wall — breathing tissue, eight-second rhythm, cilia reaching toward warmth. The reconnaissance team had entered from the northeast through a drainage tunnel. The creature knew that approach. She’d let them crawl through it. She’d watched them leave.
The southeast was different. Naida’s surveillance had mapped thirteen potential entry points along the perimeter where the wall tissue thinned — not tunnels, not designed apertures, but biological irregularities. Places where the organic architecture hadn’t fully sealed. Cracks in the skin.
Three people. Taron. Thorne. A Splinter veteran named Pei Shan who had spent three hundred years hiding from the Sanctum and could move through hostile terrain without disturbing the air.
No recording crystals. No reconnaissance objectives. Three satchels of formation-enhanced demolition charges — Silas’s design, each one the size of a fist, primed to detonate on a twelve-second delay. Sixteen charges per satchel. Forty-eight total.
Improved formation suits. Fourteen-layer arrays instead of twelve, with the outer four layers designed to degrade sacrificially while the inner ten maintained integrity. Silas had estimated seven hours in Zones 1 and 2. They planned to be inside for ninety minutes.
Raven had wanted to go. Kairos had told her no — not with the authority of the Accord but with the quiet stubbornness of a mortal man who had a mark on a wrist he was monitoring and wasn’t going to watch the pulse accelerate from inside a hive where he couldn’t reach her.
"You’re the strongest cultivator on the continent," he’d said. "And you’re too important to risk on a demolition run that doesn’t require your strength."
"Taron’s important too."
"Taron is a military commander executing a military operation. You are the person the campaign collapses without. There’s a difference."
She’d conceded. Not gracefully.
"In, break things, out," Taron said at the pre-mission briefing. "Nothing else. If the hive responds with anything beyond atmospheric, we don’t engage — we extract. The charges do the work. We just deliver them."

The wall tissue at the southeastern point was three centimeters thinner than the surrounding perimeter. Pei Shan found it by touch — her hands reading the organic surface the way a mason reads stone, feeling for the give that meant weakness.
She cut. Formation blade, void-edged, one of Bjorn’s Spirit-Touched weapons. The tissue parted with a sound like wet silk tearing. The eight-second rhythm stuttered at the incision point — a local disruption, the hive registering damage to its perimeter.
They had seconds before the response.
Three people through the gap. The tissue closed behind them — not healing, not yet, but drawing together the way a wound draws. The hive’s immune response was biological, not instantaneous. Minutes to seal. Minutes they wouldn’t need.
Zone 2. The architecture of facades and connecting tissue-corridors. Lamp-light still burning in formation fixtures. Streets recognizable from the reconnaissance footage, but different at this angle — the southeastern quarter, a residential district in the original city. Row houses with their painted shutters and their organic interiors.
