Chapter 482: Chapter 481: Before the Dark

Location:Seven Peaks — Various

Date/Time:TC1856.01.11

The day before was quiet in the way that days are quiet when everyone knows something is coming and nobody wants to be the first to name it.

Raven found Elian in the garden at dawn.

He was sitting at the guardian’s base with his hands on the bark, and his eyes closed — the morning meditation that had become his routine since the threshold crossing, the Pillar Soul listening to the continental root network the way other children listened to the radio. Aren was beside him on the retaining wall, frost tracing lazy patterns across the stone, not mapping anything specific — just the idle geometry of a boy whose ice moved when he was calm.

Bryn was asleep against the guardian’s trunk, wrapped in the blanket that Freya brought every night. The guardian had grown a root canopy over her sleeping spot — a shelter of living wood, curved and close, shaped for one specific child.

Raven sat beside Elian. Waited for him to surface.

His golden eyes opened after a few minutes. He looked at her. Then he looked at the mark on her wrist — the faint pulse of warmth that was visible if you knew where to look, a slight distortion in the skin’s surface where the resonance sat.

"You’re going somewhere," he said.

"For a day or two."

"Toward the bad place." Not a question. The root network carried the shape of her preparations — the formation-sealed suits in the armory, the sky-surfing blades cached at the perimeter positions, the recording crystals charged and sealed. He couldn’t read the details, but he could feel the direction. Everything pointed east.

"I need to see what’s inside."

Elian was quiet. His hands pressed harder against the guardian’s bark — the unconscious gesture of a child reaching for comfort through the bond that connected him to a tree and a mountain and a continental network of living stone. The guardian pulsed once beneath his palms. Warm.

"The guardian says the shape is still there," he said. "The wrong one. It hasn’t moved. It hasn’t changed. It’s just waiting."

"I know."

"And you’re going to go look at it."

"Yes."

He was quiet again. Aren’s frost had gone still on the retaining wall — the boy listening without turning, the Northern instinct for when a conversation needed space instead of participation.

"Promise you’ll come back," Elian said.

"I promise."

"Say it properly. Like you mean it."

She turned to face him. Took his hands off the bark and held them in her own. Small hands. A child’s hands. Hands that mapped continental ley-line networks and held formation slates and still sometimes reached for hers in the dark when the vibration from the east was too loud.

"I promise I will come back to you," she said. "I promise I will be careful. I promise I will run if I need to run and fight if I need to fight and come home to this mountain and this garden and you."
