Chapter 479: Chapter 478: What Grows in the Dark

Location:Seven Peaks — Bryn’s Garden, Command Center, Eastern Wall

Date/Time:TC1855.12.08

The first real snow came on the eighth.

Aren knew it was coming three days early — his frost tracery mapping the pressure system’s approach across the mountain’s thermal gradient, the ice in his boots drawing the shape of cold air moving south from the peaks. He told Elian. Elian told Bryn. Bryn told the guardian.

The guardian’s roots pulled deeper into the living stone, and the mountain prepared.

By dawn, Seven Peaks was white. The living architecture wore snow on its organic rooflines like a second skin. The formation-heated walls melted narrow, clear paths along the corridors, but everywhere else the snow lay untouched — three inches of it, clean and cold, turning the settlement into something that looked almost peaceful from the Verdant Spire’s upper windows. Smoke rose from the communal kitchens where the morning crews had started early — hot porridge, hot tea, the quiet generosity of cooks who understood that the first snow of winter was a day when people needed warmth in their hands as well as their walls.

The cold corridors at the gates ran warmer than usual, the five-degree differential now measured against winter air instead of autumn. The observers wrapped their cloaks tighter. Bess Cade’s latest crew was already at work on house #82, the sealing compound mixed with a cold-weather additive she’d developed two months ago that kept the formula from setting too fast in freezing air. The scaffold was slippery. Nobody complained. The work didn’t stop for weather.

The children played.

Not the monitored, serious, world-shaping children that the adults sometimes forgot they were. The actual children — loud, graceless, throwing snow at each other with the specific dedication that winter demanded. Bryn’s aim was terrible. Aren cheated. Elian, who had been mapping ley-line fluctuations through the root network since before dawn, looked up from his formation slate, saw the snowball fight, set the slate down with the deliberate care of a boy who knew his research mattered and also knew that snow was snow, and joined.

Lily Cade was there too — five years old, bundled in a coat that Bess had lined with formation-warmed fabric from the Innovation Forge’s latest textile experiment. She couldn’t throw as far as the others but she threw with conviction, and when a snowball hit Aren in the back of the head, everyone — including Aren — turned to look at Lily, who stood with empty hands and an expression of absolute innocence that fooled nobody.

Raven watched from the garden gate with a cup of tea in her hands — the highland variety, still warm — and for three minutes the world was a garden with snow in it and children throwing things at each other, and the mountain beneath them was just a mountain, and the thing growing in the dark three hundred kilometers east was someone else’s problem.

Three minutes. Then Bryn stopped.
