Bess woke at five.

The unit was quiet. Lily slept on the narrow bed against the wall, curled around her cloth doll, her breathing the slow, even rhythm of a child who hadn’t learned to sleep lightly yet. The formation lights in the walls held their nighttime amber — the warm, low glow that the living architecture produced between dusk and dawn, adjusting to the human rhythm of the people inside.

From the other side of the partition, the sound of breathing. Even. Measured. The precise, regular cadence that Bess had lain awake listening to for months — the breathing of something that slept the way it did everything else, correctly, without the small imperfections that made real sleep sound like a person instead of a bellows.

This was the last morning she would hear it.

She rose without sound. Dressed. Made Lily’s breakfast in the small cooking alcove — porridge with honey, the honey from the community stores, the porridge from the grain that the agricultural teams grew on the terraces above the settlement. She set the bowl on the table with a spoon and a cup of water. She boiled water for herself and held the cup in both hands and drank standing in the kitchen while the thing in the other room breathed.

At six, the back-room sounds changed. Movement. The creak of the bed frame. Footsteps — the right weight, the right cadence. The door opened, and Harlan walked into the kitchen with the measured efficiency of a man beginning his morning routine. He looked at Bess. Nodded. The nod was precise — the greeting of a husband who’d been married long enough that mornings didn’t require conversation.

"I’m heading to the store," he said. The same words. Every morning.

"Mm."

He left. The door closed. His footsteps receded along the path — even, unguarded, the right shoulder carrying the same fluid swing as the left.
