The morning after Sera’s extraction, Raven convened a meeting of three people in the Formation Hall workshop: herself, Coop, and Thorne. No formation slates. No documentation. The conversation that happened in this room would not be recorded because the decision it produced could not be explained to anyone outside it without revealing things the population wasn’t ready to hear.
"The three strangers," Raven said. "Cold-trigger. Both days."
Thorne didn’t argue. Yesterday, he might have — might have raised the Charter, the precedent, the cost of testing residents without cause. Yesterday, the mountain had felt safe. Today, the empty chair in Lin Yue’s office where Sera Voss had sat discussing relocation protocols said otherwise.
"Pretexts?" Thorne asked.
"Medical follow-up for the healer — standard for any practitioner who’s been here more than a month. Housing reassignment consultation for the merchant — his current unit is in a section being reorganized for Confederate bio-growth integration. Library appointment for the scholar — Lin Yue needs formation theory references for the branch recalibration work."
"All plausible."
"All true. The meetings are real. The corridor is the addition."
Coop sat in his corner, cybernetic eyes already luminescent with lattice processing. He’d been awake all night — not from insomnia but from the Cognitect’s equivalent of a mind that couldn’t stop running calculations. The Sera confirmation had validated the cold-trigger method. It had also revealed the scope of the problem: the organism’s infiltrators passed every other detection system Seven Peaks possessed. The cold-trigger was the only thing that caught them. And three people who’d been reading "edge of normal" on every other test for over a month were still walking the mountain’s corridors.
"I’ll monitor from the workshop junction," Coop said. "Same position as the Sera test. Lattice running in parallel. If the cold-trigger shows a response, the lattice can cross-reference against the movement analysis baseline I’ve built."
