Book 1 of Rebirth of the Technomage Saga: Earth's Awakening

Chapter 460 - 459: Two Rivers

Location:Seven Peaks — Formation Hall Workshop, Confederate Quarter, Bryn’s Garden

Date/Time:TC1855.05.27-28

Coop had spent sixty years learning to read people through their behavior. The cybernetic eyes the Federation had given him — military-grade optics that tracked micro-expressions and measured stress indicators and processed threat assessments faster than human cognition could follow — had been tools for that reading. Extensions of an instinct he’d carried since before any machine touched him.

The Cognitive Lattice was different. It didn’t read behavior. It read structure — the underlying architecture of a mind, the way thoughts organized themselves, the patterns that formed when cognition met intention met action. Since the lattice had stabilized after his breakthrough, Coop had learned to sense things the cybernetic eyes couldn’t: the subtle compression of a lie being constructed, the fractal symmetry of genuine emotion, the flat geometric regularity of a performance maintained too long.

The lattice had read the three strangers as inconclusive. Within normal parameters but at the edge of them. A result that meant either nothing or everything, depending on which side of the edge you stood on.

Now he was sitting in the Formation Hall workshop across from a Confederate elder named Root-Singer Tahla, watching her open a sealed clay pot with the care of a woman handling something alive and irreplaceable.

"We call them truth-roots," Tahla said. She was small, weathered, with hands that carried the same deep staining as Whisper-Root Anaya — a lifetime of contact with living soil and bio-neural tissue. Her voice had the layered quality that Coop had come to associate with the Confederate speakers: accustomed to communicating through biological networks as much as through sound. "They’ve been grown in our territory for generations. Each one is cultivated from a mother-root that responds to spiritual contamination the way skin responds to flame — immediate, binary, unmistakable."

She lifted the lid. Inside, nestled in a bed of damp dark earth, was a root the length of Coop’s hand. Pale, fibrous, with a faint luminescence that pulsed in the rhythm of something breathing. It was alive in the way that cultivation materials were alive — not sentient, but responsive. An organism tuned to a specific frequency.

"When the root encounters clean spiritual energy, it grows," Tahla said. "New tendrils, within minutes. When it encounters contamination — the wrongness your scanners are designed to find — it shrivels. Dies back. The response is immediate and unambiguous."

"How sensitive?"

"We’ve tested it against every form of spiritual corruption we’ve encountered in our territory. Ley-line degradation, void-residue, cultivation injury byproducts, necrotic traces from the shadowspawn incursions. The truth-root detects and categorizes all of them. For the type of contamination you’ve described — parasitic secondary signatures — we adapted a variant three months ago when the first reports of replaced individuals reached our network."
