Book 1 of Rebirth of the Technomage Saga: Earth's Awakening

Chapter 420 - 419: The Fading Light

Location:Seven Peaks — Boys’ Room, Verdant Spire, Northern Terrace

Date/Time:TC1855.01.05 (3 AM – Dawn)

Elian woke her at 3 AM.

Not with words — with a hand on her arm and a shaking that wasn’t fear. Raven’s eyes opened to the dark of her quarters and the weight of her son’s hand trembling against her skin and the particular quality of his breathing that she’d learned to read the way other mothers read cries: not scared. Grieving.

"Mama."

She was upright before the word finished. Soul Ascension reflexes — the body responding to alarm faster than the mind could evaluate the source. The room: dark, quiet, the living-wood walls humming their ambient frequency. Veyr against the wall, pommel faintly violet. 7T9 on the bedside table, awake (7T9 was always awake), his star-metal body oriented toward Elian with the focused attention of a processing entity that had already identified the boy’s state and was waiting for the biological parent to catch up.

"Elian. What is it?"

"Someone’s going out." His voice was small. Not frightened-small — the smallness of someone carrying something too heavy for their size. "Up north. Like a candle."

Raven placed her hand over his. The shaking continued. His golden eyes were open in the dark, glowing faintly — the Pillar Soul’s spiritual emanation, which manifested visually when his awareness was extended into the root-network. He was connected. Right now. At 3 AM. Sensing something that had woken him from sleep the way smoke woke you from sleep: not through conscious detection but through the animal awareness that something was wrong.

"Show me."

She opened her own life-sense. Not the broad, ambient awareness she maintained during waking hours — the focused instrument, the precision perception that let her read the spiritual state of living things at a distance. She directed it north, through Sylvara’s root-network, following the channels that Elian was already following.

The network carried her. Eighty kilometers of root-and-soil awareness, the mountain’s living nervous system pulsing with the quiet data of a sleeping nation. She pushed further — beyond the network’s reliable range, into the territory where Sylvara’s reach thinned and the root connections became sparse and intermittent. The signal degraded. The clarity faded.
