Book 1 of Rebirth of the Technomage Saga: Earth's Awakening

Chapter 414 - 413: The Signal

Location:Seven Peaks — Formation Hall, Command Center

Date/Time:TC1854.12.18-22

Silas hadn’t slept in three days.

This was not unusual for Silas — the formation master’s relationship with sleep was adversarial, a grudging concession to biology that he minimized through cultivation-enhanced stamina and the particular stubbornness of a man who had spent 46 years solving problems that didn’t respect business hours. What was unusual was the reason. Silas didn’t lose sleep over maintenance schedules or network calibration or the routine engineering challenges that occupied his professional life. He lost sleep over things he couldn’t explain. And the thing on his workstation had been refusing explanation for ten days.

The interference signal. The structured pattern broadcasting from the 40km zone east of Seven Peaks. The low-frequency resonance that degraded three formation nodes and carried a structure that Silas had described as "organized" and then spent the subsequent week trying to understand what kind of organization.

His workstation in the Formation Hall occupied a chamber specifically designed for signal analysis — formation-dampened walls that eliminated ambient spiritual energy noise, a display array capable of rendering frequency data in seven simultaneous dimensions, and a chair that he’d shaped to his body through 18 months of not leaving it. The chair knew his spine the way his spine knew the formation network: intimately, constantly, without affection.

The signal data occupied the display array in layers. Raw frequency data on the bottom — the interference pattern as captured by the eastern network nodes, a waveform that looked chaotic on first inspection and increasingly organized on subsequent analysis. Above it: Silas’s isolation of the signal’s component frequencies, each one separated and analyzed individually. Above that: the temporal mapping — how the signal changed over time, second by second, hour by hour.

The signal had 47 component frequencies. Each one discrete. Each one stable. Each one broadcasting at a power level too low to detect without dedicated analysis equipment. Silas had spent the first four days isolating them. The second four days mapping their relationships. The last two days staring at the result.

The 47 frequencies were not independent. They were harmonics. Multiples of a single base frequency — each one a mathematical derivative of the same fundamental tone, the way the notes of a chord were mathematical derivatives of the root note. The signal wasn’t 47 separate broadcasts. It was one broadcast expressed in 47 harmonics.

One voice. Forty-seven resonances.

He’d determined this on the seventh day. On the eighth day, he’d identified the base frequency. On the ninth day, he’d mapped the harmonic intervals. On the tenth day — today — he’d discovered the pattern that had kept him from sleeping.

The harmonics pulsed.
