Chapter 376 - 375: The Gathering
Location:Virescent Expanse — The Basin (Neutral Territory)
Date/Time:TC1854.05.01-10
The Basin had no name because no tribe claimed it.
A shallow depression in the Expanse where mountain met river met forest — a geographic coincidence that placed it at the intersection of three major tribal territories without belonging to any of them. The Stone-Fang considered it too low. The Tide-Walker considered it too dry. The Thorn-Hide considered it too exposed. For eight hundred years, this mutual rejection had made it the closest thing the Confederacy had to neutral ground.
The root network carried the summons. Not a command — a request. The Thorn-Hide elder’s voice filtered through a thousand kilometers of interconnected trees, amplified by the living staff she’d planted in healed soil, carrying the authority of a woman who’d never asked for help before and was asking now.
They came.
Not quickly. Not eagerly. Over two days, in ones and pairs and cautious delegations, the tribes of the Wild Confederacy arrived at a place they’d spent centuries ignoring and found it occupied by the most improbable gathering in living memory.
The Storm-Claw arrived first — from above, naturally. Three delegates descended from the canopy on guided glides, feathered crests flared wide to read the air for threats, clawed feet finding branches with the instinctive precision of beings who’d never trusted the ground. Tarek led them. His crest was still flattened — not skepticism anymore, grief. Four scouts dead. The electric blue tips had dimmed to gray since Raven had last seen him. He took position in the highest branches overlooking the Basin and said nothing.
The Tide-Walker came through the stream. The matriarch rose from the water at the Basin’s edge — shoulders and head above the surface, gill slits working in the open air, webbed hands resting on the bank. She’d brought five swimmers who remained submerged, visible as shadows beneath the current. Watching. The aquatic equivalent of an armed escort.
The Stone-Fang descended from the ridge. Eight warriors in formation — dense-boned, gray-skinned, moving down the slope with the measured heaviness of beings who understood that every step carried consequences when you weighed twice what other people weighed. Their leader — the one whose village had lost twelve — took position on the largest rock in the Basin and sat cross-legged, his stone-skin blending with the granite until he looked like an outcrop that had opinions.
The Thorn-Hide melted from the tree line. The elder, her living staff trailing rootlets that immediately dug into the Basin’s soil, connecting her to the root network, making her the gathering’s communications hub. Bark-skin shifting in the dappled light. Vine-hair reading the chemical signatures of every person present.
And others. Tribes Raven hadn’t visited. Hadn’t met. Drawn by the root network’s summons and the particular quality of the signal it carried — not just the elder’s voice but the life-song, bleeding through the network from the healed waste zone, a frequency that the forest’s inherited memory recognized even if the people living in it had never heard it firsthand.
