Chapter 371 - 370: Children of Change
Location:Virescent Expanse — Thorn-Hide Territory

The jungle changed on the third day.
Not in ways that untrained eyes would have noticed — the canopy was still dense, the undergrowth still thick, the bioluminescent channels still threading through the wood in patterns that made the forest glow at night. But Raven’s technomage awareness caught it the way a musician catches a key change. The trees were scored with markings. Shallow cuts in the bark, placed at intervals that looked natural and weren’t — patterns that carried information in a language she couldn’t read but could recognize as language. Territorial markers. Bio-craft encoding. Someone had written on the forest, and the forest was carrying the message.
"We’re in someone’s territory," she said.
Kairos, examining a cluster of flowering vines that had been growing progressively closer to his sleeve for the past ten minutes, looked up. "How can you tell?"
"The markings on the trees. Every twenty meters. Consistent height. Encoded information." She pointed to the nearest — a series of shallow scores at chest height, filled with a luminescent sap that made them visible only when you knew to look. "That’s not natural scarring. That’s a sentence."
"Ah." Kairos gently detached the vine from his cuff. The vine resisted. He detached it again, more firmly. It reached for a third attempt. "And the sentence says?"
"I don’t know. But the tone is probably ’you’re not welcome here.’"
She was right about the watching. Wrong about the welcome.
They’d been tracked since dawn. The Kirin bead’s life-sense registered the presences — living beings in the canopy above, in the undergrowth to either side, moving parallel to their path with a fluidity that made the tracking feel less like surveillance and more like the forest itself paying attention. Not hostile. Not friendly. The particular quality of attention that predators gave to something they hadn’t yet classified as threat or prey.
Raven kept walking. Didn’t reach for Veyr. Kept her hands visible and her spiritual pressure contained. Showed no aggression. Showed no fear. The protocol for entering unfamiliar territory with unknown inhabitants was the same across ninety-eight lifetimes: move steadily, project calm, and let whoever’s watching decide the terms of the first conversation.
