Chapter 93: Don’t Try to Pressure Me with Filial Piety
Before long, Lihua Village had turned in its grain quota, and the remaining grain and money were being distributed to the villagers according to their work points.
Su Qing’s work points had already been officially separated from the Old Su Family’s, so her share was given to her directly. She had always earned the maximum work points in the past, and she continued to earn a considerable amount. As a result, she received a large portion of grain from this distribution. On top of that, she got over thirty yuan, making her the envy of many villagers. After all, Su Qing only had herself to feed now. Her share was more than enough to live on, with plenty left over.
What’s more, everyone knew Su Qing still had the five hundred yuan she’d received from the Old Su Family.
Although the members of the Old Su Family were indignant, they knew the matter was set in stone. Neither Zhao Youcai nor Wang Xuehong would take their side, so no matter how furious they were, they had no choice but to swallow their anger and keep quiet.
But while the Old Su Family had quieted down, there were still some people who wanted to pick a fight and make Su Qing miserable.
"Well now, Su Qing, that’s a whole lot of grain and money you’ve got there. Don’t forget to give your grandparents a cut to show your filial respect. A person has to be dutiful, you know. Otherwise, your future in-laws won’t think much of you." Er La Niang glanced at the grain Su Qing had received, her heart seething with resentment. She was the only one in her family who earned work points, but she was getting on in years and couldn’t earn the maximum amount anymore. She only managed about eight points a day. By that calculation, she was earning nearly a fifth less than Su Qing.
It wasn’t just her in her household; she also had her son. On top of that, her two brothers’ families were barely scraping by and needed her to help them out from time to time. As a result, at least half of the grain and money she received from the year’s distribution, plus whatever meat and food her son brought home, went to subsidizing her brothers.
This meant their own lives were hard, so when she saw Su Qing receive so much grain and money, she was consumed with a clawing jealousy. Su Qing was supposed to be her future daughter-in-law. If she had managed to marry her son off to Su Qing, not only would all this grain and money belong to her family, but Su Qing’s five hundred yuan would have been hers too.
’If that had happened, why would I be worrying about making ends meet? Even my two brothers’ families would be living comfortably.’
But instead, not only had Su Qing publicly humiliated her, but even her own son had warned her time and again to stop talking about marrying Su Qing.
With all her schemes having gone up in smoke, how could Er La Niang not be filled with hatred?
So now, whenever she got the chance, she couldn’t resist taking a jab at Su Qing.
"What do you think you’re doing? What do you want, Er La Niang?" Before Su Qing could even say a word, Aunt Cuihua, who was standing beside her, glared at Er La Niang. "How much grain and money Su Qing gets and how she spends it is none of your damn business. It has nothing to do with you, so stop acting all high and mighty and trying to bully her."
"Hmph, you’re getting so worked up, I thought it had something to do with you." Er La Niang glared back at Aunt Cuihua, not to be outdone. "Don’t think I don’t know what you’re up to. Your Gou Dan doesn’t have a girlfriend yet, does he? What’s the matter, you want Su Qing for a daughter-in-law?"
"Pah! You think I’m as shameless as you? Let’s not forget who it was that tried to scheme against Su Qing. Just thinking about it makes me feel ashamed on your behalf!" Aunt Cuihua planted her hands on her hips and ran a finger down her own cheek in a mocking gesture as she unleashed a tirade on Er La Niang. "When it comes to being shameless, if you’re second in this village, no one would dare claim to be first!"
"Liu Cuixia, are you trying to start a fight?" Furious from the humiliation, Er La Niang shrieked at Aunt Cuihua.
"Bring it on! I’m not afraid of you!" Aunt Cuihua shot back, her eyes wide.
Su Qing quickly moved to shield Aunt Cuihua, facing Er La Niang directly. "Aunt Zhang," she said, her voice cold, "If you have a problem with me, say it to my face. Stop with the passive-aggressive jabs all day. Do you think I’m still the same old pushover you can walk all over? I’m warning you, don’t provoke me. When I get pushed too far, I’d dare pull a knife on my own grandmother. What makes you think I’d hesitate with you?"
With that, Su Qing gave a cold laugh. "And don’t try to use filial piety to guilt-trip me. I used to value duty and family, but what did that get me? Anyone with eyes can see the answer to that. I’ll show respect to my elders, but only if they’re worthy of it. If they aren’t, I’m not going to sacrifice my own well-being for the sake of some so-called reputation."
At her words, not only was Er La Niang stunned into silence, but the onlooking villagers also stared with wide eyes.
’Damn, this Su Qing girl really doesn’t care about her reputation at all.’
But then again, when they thought about how the Old Su Family had treated her, most of them had to admit she had a point.
"You... you... you really don’t care about your reputation?" Er La Niang stammered, shocked.
"Can reputation feed me?" Su Qing said coolly. "I don’t steal, and I don’t rob. I live honestly and my conscience is clear. I refuse to believe that people with eyes can’t see the truth. If anyone wants to brand me as ’unfilial,’ they should first go through everything I’ve been through. If they can do that and still feel no resentment, then they can come talk to me about duty."
"That’s right! Exactly!" Aunt Cuihua clapped her hands and exclaimed.
"She’s right," Aunt Tao and a few other women chimed in, supporting Su Qing.
Naturally, Zhao Youcai and Wang Xuehong saw the commotion. They were already annoyed with Er La Niang for stirring up trouble. It wasn’t until they saw Su Qing had argued her into a speechless stupor that they finally intervened. "Alright, that’s enough! What’s all this noise about?" Zhao Youcai yelled. "Er La Niang, if you keep this up, you can forget about getting your share of the grain!"
Er La Niang’s heart skipped a beat. She wanted to protest, to ask why she was the only one being singled out, but the anger in Zhao Youcai’s eyes made her wither. She shot Su Qing one last resentful glare but didn’t dare utter another word. The suppressed rage felt like a painful knot in her chest.
Looking completely triumphant, Aunt Cuihua beamed at Su Qing. "Su Qing, I’ll get my husband and Gou Dan to help you carry all this grain back home in a minute."
"Alright, thank you! I really appreciate the help," Su Qing said with a grateful smile, readily accepting the offer.
"Ah, don’t be so polite! We’re practically family." With a wave of her hand, Aunt Cuihua called her husband and son over, and they helped Su Qing push the cart of grain back to her house.
The Old Su Family members watched Su Qing walk away, their fists clenched in anger. Old Su, in particular, was overcome with a stifling sense of grievance. ’That damned girl has absolutely no regard for her own family!’
But the Su Family members didn’t dare make a scene. It wasn’t just because of what had happened with Su Qing before. The current situation with Su Tao was enough to make the entire Old Su Family feel like they had to hang their heads in shame in the village.
’As for Su Tao, they hated her to the core—even more than they hated Su Qing. Murder! That was the crime of murder! With a reputation like that hanging over them, how would any of the other children of the Old Su Family ever find a spouse?’
Meanwhile, Su Tao, the object of the Old Su Family’s teeth-grinding hatred, was at that very moment acting cute and cuddling up to a man.
