Chapter 331: Thirty-Four On The Bridge

Inland Bridge Nine had three crews west of the sever joint.

West traffic crew kept six lanes moving.

Hara Binn drove the barrier truck.

Sol Eke cleared stalled engines.

Meri Thane counted buses.

Kio Rusk worked the north lane gate.

Pavel Sorn carried the last tow cable.

Nadi Bell marked Black Grass distance.

Ivo Kett ran the field phone.

Rema Low held the west release key.

Tess Orro moved people from cars that could not continue.

Dun Vale kept the south walk open.

Kori Pell drove the medical cart.

Asha Venn recorded the crew.

Center-joint crew kept three manual sever machines ready.

Bex Tor held Joint One.

Lumi Renn held its second handle.

Olan Dast and Mira Kade held Joint Two.

Fei Moss and Rook Sal held Joint Three.

Eran Quill inspected the bridge pins.

Sola Pike kept hydraulic pressure.

Niko Marr carried the hand pump.

Vera Ota watched east-span load.

Milo Sun held the center release key.

Service-walk crew kept power, medical movement, and the defender return path.

Kesa Holt and Nim Rowe ran cable power.

Jori Bell and Hessa Moor carried injured civilians.

Iri Cole kept the bridge camera.

Toma Beck watched river relation.

Nera Lin carried fire foam.

Jae Rill kept the east field phone.

Savi Kelm held the service-walk release.

Daro Wen and Lysa Hart cleared the last maintenance truck.

Thirty-four names.

Three local crews.

All west of the center sever joint.

Asha added ordinary details.

Hara wore one yellow glove and one bare hand. Sol’s tow hook had blue tape over a cracked latch. Meri had written counts on her left sleeve. Bex and Lumi argued over which Joint One handle stuck in rain. Niko’s pump squeaked every third stroke. Iri’s camera had one dead corner. Lysa carried a lunch tin she had not opened.

The details had no tactical value. They could test later contact without asking a copied voice for philosophy.

Asha read the roster over the open line before Tali received a casualty estimate.

Black Grass entered the western span through lane paint and suspension cables.

The city route had an estimated eighty-seven seconds before contact.

Traffic still filled four kilometers of western approach. The last civilian bus had crossed the center. Smaller cars and people on foot remained behind it.

West traffic crew closed vehicle lanes at the approach and moved people onto both walks. Hara used the barrier truck as a shield after black lane marks cut through its rear wheels.

Sol pulled a stalled family car behind the truck. Tess broke its rear window after the doors opened onto river water. Jori and Hessa carried two children to the south walk while their guardian climbed out under current help.

Kori’s medical cart took six people per trip. On the third, one wheel followed a black lane mark west. Pavel cut the axle and turned the cart into a two-person drag board.

Meri counted 3,412 people still west of the center joint.

The bridge could sever now and abandon them with thirty-four bridge workers and joint keepers.

It could wait thirty-four seconds for the current walking pace.

Black Grass needed eighty-seven.

Tali asked for alternatives.

The Woman offered a thirteen-person corridor at the center joint. Current holders could move bridge crews or civilians into Coastal Port in eleven seconds per group.

The corridor needed the joint held as one private departure until each group cleared.

Moving all thirty-four bridge workers required three cycles. Moving 3,412 civilians required more than the remaining clock.

The first group could include sever operators, but removing them would leave no local cut.

The three bridge crews refused priority while civilians remained.

The corridor took thirteen injured walkers from Kori’s cart under current requests. It saved them and strengthened Coastal Port reserve.

One injured walker rejected the private address after arrival and kept the rescue receipt. Another accepted port housing. Their later choices did not change the bridge clock.

It did not solve the bridge.

Caleb gave his travel time from Cairo.

Caleb’s complete body needed three minutes through Ridge and Inland Arrays.

Projected silver force could reach in forty seconds if two local keepers requested. The bridge and eighty thousand evacuees would then share Caleb as one structural destination while Black Grass already occupied the span.

His force might hold the bridge and carry the grass into every silver support route.

Kestrel tested one meter of projected support at the east rail. Silver appeared under the bridge and every black lane mark turned toward it. She released before the mark reached Caleb’s Cairo floor.

The test confirmed force was available and destination risk was immediate.

Tali rejected projected whole-bridge support. Caleb agreed.

The river-diversion option used two service cables to pull lane relation down into water. Toma Beck and Nera Lin tested one empty lane section.

Black Grass followed the lane into the river and emerged at the city’s drinking-water intake three kilometers east.

Toma cut his cable. Nera foamed the lane mark. The intake closed one gate before contamination crossed.

River diversion endangered more people faster.

Staged sever could cut the western approach first, then center after civilians cleared. Eran Quill inspected the approach pins.

Sola kept hydraulic pressure while Niko supplied the hand pump. Their gauges disagreed by twelve percent because Joint Two already occupied a different road depth. Vera watched east-span load increase with every civilian crossing.

Black Grass had already entered the west release housing. Cutting there would route the failure through the sever machine and could disable Joint One.

He tried one manual pin with insulated tongs.

The pin came free and reappeared in Joint Two.

Staged sever no longer kept cuts separate.

Full center sever remained.

Three joints had to release within four seconds. If one lagged, the deck would twist toward the city and carry Black Grass across the east suspension cable.

All six joint-handle keepers needed to remain.

Hydraulic pressure, hand pump, pin inspection, and east-load watch needed another five.

Service power needed two.

At least thirteen joint and service keepers had to stay through separation.

The other twenty-one could attempt current return after civilians cleared. No tested route guaranteed it.

Meri’s count fell below one thousand.

Black Grass would make contact in fifty-two seconds.

Tali required expected loss.

"Thirty-four defenders exposed," Asha said. "At least thirteen remain through sever. Twenty-one may attempt east return. Current bridge relation after cut unknown. Civilian count west: nine hundred twelve and falling. City route at risk: eighty thousand current evacuees plus east districts."

"Known deaths if cut?"

"None yet. Expected missing or death among bridge crews and any civilians west at sever."

"Known deaths if no cut?"

"Unknown. Black Grass enters city route in under one minute."

Tali asked each crew whether it kept local action.

West traffic kept evacuation and west key.

Center joint kept three sever controls.

Service walk kept power and return attempt.

Nobody transferred execution to Tali.

Meri counted two hundred people.

Thirty seconds remained.

The final walkers crossed center under Dun and Tess.

One old man stopped at the painted joint to retrieve a dropped bag. Dun asked whether the bag mattered more than the current crossing. The man left it. Tess took his elbow only after he asked and released him on east deck.

Meri’s count reached zero civilians west.

Hara abandoned the barrier truck and ran east. Black Grass reached its cab before he cleared the north lane.

Asha read the roster again.

All thirty-four answered.

Hara still had one yellow glove. Sol’s cracked latch held. Niko’s pump gave its third-stroke squeak. Lysa put the unopened lunch tin under the service rail so it would not catch a control.

Tali entered approval under her name.

"Cut the bridge after the last current civilian crosses. Preserve every defender name as current until contact proves otherwise."

The center-joint crews put hands on six local handles.

Black Grass reached the west release key.
