After dinner, everyone dispersed, and Peter Brown walked alongside Harlan Swift.

"Peter, you have to be careful. Even though you’re officially in your position now, there are still many people eyeing your job. One small misstep and you could lose it. I heard that a guy from the logistics department named Wyatt was the one behind the scheme against you last time. He wanted to get the job for someone named Storm Williams. You really need to be on your guard; Wyatt might not be a leader, but he’s well-connected amongst the personnel."

So that was the situation!

It was only now that Peter understood who had been scheming against him last time.

"I’ll be careful, thanks a lot."

"What’s there to thank? I’m only helping because I like you. If it were someone else, I wouldn’t have bothered."

Peter asked, "How confident are you about the exam preparation?"

Shaking his head, Harlan Swift said, "Whether I’m confident or not, I have to give it my all. My position is also coveted by too many. You know how things work in the Immortal Realm; no matter how powerful we were in the Lower Realm, we have to start all over again here."

"Most of those who come out from the Cultivator aren’t doing well, right?"

"Exactly. If people don’t follow the path of officialdom, no matter how skilled they are, even if they get rich from business, those with Power can snatch away their business anytime. There are too many such examples. Some people have built up big businesses, but then an official with influence would take over the whole business at a very low price, and there’s nowhere to appeal. Without a strong backer, nobody cares about you. Once you have a backer, you can enjoy all the benefits."

Seeing Harlan Swift’s lament, Peter made up his mind. If he could make something of himself, he would definitely give Harlan a hand.
