Chapter 561 - 551: Codename: Calamity
Two rumors, in particular, were the most popular. The first was that Mu Chen had been driven out of Holy Tomb Mountain by Shan Tianyu, who had used his authority to get revenge. Chu Aoqing, in turn, had been persuaded by her family to return to her clan. After all, Mu Chen was just a nobody with no background whatsoever, while many people were aware of Chu Aoqing’s status. It was completely impossible for the two of them to be together.
The second rumor claimed that Mu Chen’s demonstrated strength was too immense, and he had caught the eye of an Inner Mountain Elder. He was now somewhere receiving private, systematic training. As for Chu Aoqing, she had been won over by him and naturally had to accompany him, which was why they had both vanished from the Inner Mountain. This rumor was obviously far more credible than the first, but it also gave countless people room for wild fantasies.
But that was all a month ago. Three months was long enough for people to forget many things, and for many hot topics to cool down. At the very least, the name Mu Chen had already been buried deep in their minds.
HISS!
A Spatial Rift slowly tore open in front of a strange building on the first level. The sight stunned countless onlookers. This was the entrance to the arena on the first level, and the Martial Arts Realms of the students gathered here peaked at only the Seventh-Ring Martial Emperor.
Even senior students at the Venerable Realm wouldn’t need to enter from the first level. Every level had its own arena entrance; there was no reason to go to such trouble. This thought crossed everyone’s mind, piquing their curiosity. They were eager to see just who was arriving.
However, the instant the Spatial Rift opened, a tangible, jade-green wave of energy pushed everyone within a five-meter radius of the rift away. It was merely a push, though, and no one was harmed. This feat alone was something no ordinary person could accomplish, causing countless students to look on with reverence. The philosophy that the strong were to be respected was especially ingrained within Holy Tomb Mountain, where the weak could only lower their heads and keep a low profile.
Suddenly, three figures slowly emerged from the rift: Mu Chen, Mu Junwu, and Chu Aoqing. Perhaps intentionally, the two women simultaneously slowed their pace the moment they stepped out, making Mu Chen’s position slightly more prominent. At that moment, the trio’s appearances were finally revealed to everyone present.
The first person they saw was Mu Chen. He had shed his Institute Uniform for a set of white robes. Framed by his long, crimson-purple hair, he exuded an air of elegance and nobility. His eyes were closed and a faint smile played on his lips, yet he seemed to be surveying his surroundings.
To his left was the purple-haired Chu Aoqing, tall and slender with an indifferent expression. To his right was Mu Junwu, with shoulder-length, jade-green hair and intelligent eyes. However, Mu Junwu was wearing a white, silk veil that concealed most of her face. In her own words, it was to "avoid causing a panic."
’A panic?’ Mu Chen found the description baffling, but upon further thought, he realized that with Mu Junwu’s looks, causing a panic was certainly no exaggeration.
The lineup of one man and two women was truly formidable. More importantly, both women had absolutely incredible figures. And since Chu Aoqing wasn’t hiding her face, her stunning beauty cast an Immobilization Technique on the entire crowd.
"Hah..."
Letting out a light breath, Mu Chen, who hadn’t seen so many people in three months, smiled. "The first level is still as lively as ever."
Chu Aoqing chimed in, "From what I remember, I thought you were someone who preferred peace and quiet."
Mu Chen chuckled. "When you’re alone for too long, you can’t help but feel a little emotional seeing a crowd."
"Oh? Are you saying you’re dissatisfied with us?" Mu Junwu suddenly spoke from behind her veil, giving Mu Chen a strange look.
Mu Chen was taken aback and quickly waved his hands. "Not at all, not at all! How could I possibly be dissatisfied with two great beauties accompanying me? You know, other people would kill for an opportunity like this."
Hearing this, the two women snorted coldly and said in unison, "Good. You know your place."
"Er..."
A dark look crossed his face. Mu Chen rubbed his nose in resignation. ’The favor of a beautiful woman is the hardest to bear,’ he thought. He had certainly learned that firsthand. With steady steps, Mu Chen walked toward the strange building. And strangely, wherever the three of them went, everyone within a five-meter radius—men and women alike—was pushed aside by an invisible force.
Only Mu Chen and Chu Aoqing knew the reason for this: Mu Junwu’s special condition. If not for this precaution, that Fallen Nether Puppet would probably have bathed the entire first level in blood.
In Mu Chen’s eyes, this was a standard Alien Race-style building. It was cylindrical, with twenty-eight levels. A spiral staircase ascended along the exterior of each level, but seeing as they were completely empty, Mu Chen figured they were purely decorative.
Countless arched windows were scattered regularly across the building’s facade. Through these windows, one could see scenes within, but they weren’t of room furnishings. Instead, they displayed unknown landscapes, as if the view from each window was completely different. There were even all sorts of environments: spring, summer, autumn, winter, forests, oceans, deserts, and mountains.
Pulling his gaze back, Mu Chen looked at the shimmering silver gate. Above it was a large emblem formed by a crossed longsword and shield. Above the emblem, three large, stylized characters radiating a thick battle intent floated in mid-air, spelling out the word "Arena."
"What do you think?" Mu Junwu asked, suddenly curious.
"It’s alright. Let’s go in and see."
As he spoke, Mu Chen stepped directly through the shimmering silver gate. His vision blurred for a moment, and then a modestly sized room appeared before him.
There was nothing in the room except for a small, square table and chair. On the table were two sets of strange clothing, one black and one white. The black outfit was emblazoned with clusters of crimson Fire Flames, while the white one had clusters of blue Fire Flames. The clothes were folded neatly.
On top of each set of clothing lay a mask. The masks were also strange, shaped like an oval but slightly pointed at the chin and wider at the top, looking like an inverted teardrop at first glance. The masks were covered in strange, inscribed Runes, most of which were stripe-like and distributed irregularly across every corner of the surface.
Just as Mu Chen’s gaze fell upon the two sets of clothes, the lights in the room suddenly dimmed. A humanoid projection appeared opposite him. The figure wore a loose-fitting white outfit with a very high collar that almost covered half its nose. But even if it hadn’t, Mu Chen wouldn’t have been able to see its face, because she was wearing one of the teardrop masks, this one covered with blue Runes. Her sudden appearance immediately captured Mu Chen’s attention.
"Welcome to the Holy Mountain Arena. Please choose a codename for yourself. It does not need to be your real name."
Mu Chen was surprised to hear that the voice of this illusory projection was a woman’s. After a brief shock, he composed himself and mused aloud, "A codename? Calamity."
He wasn’t sure why, but he had blurted out the name subconsciously. The moment he said it, even he was a little stunned.
"Calamity. Registration successful." The voice was unchanged. After speaking crisply, it continued, "This will be your codename in the arena, used to summon you for matched battles. The clothes and mask before you are tools to conceal your identity during combat. You may only choose one color, black or white. The other will disappear after you have made your choice. Of course, the colors have no meaning; they are merely to suit different preferences. Once you are dressed, you may pass through the door behind me to the arena lobby. There are many more activities to choose from there. I wish you an outstanding performance in the arena."
After delivering the speech rapidly, the projection flickered and vanished. The dim light in the room suddenly brightened. Mu Chen couldn’t help but smile. ’But that voice sounds a little familiar,’ he thought, ’as if I’ve heard it somewhere before.’
After thinking for a moment to no avail, Mu Chen took a white ribbon from his Storage Ring and skillfully tied his long, crimson-purple hair into a sleek, flowing ponytail. Without hesitation, he chose the black outfit. He realized he no longer disliked the color black so much. He wondered if it was because of the Flame Dragon Blood’s influence.
He quickly scanned every corner of the room with his Spiritual Power. After finding no trace of monitoring Spiritual Power, Mu Chen swiftly changed his clothes, donning the loose-fitting black robe. To his surprise, the outfit even came with a pair of comfortable, perfectly fitting black boots. The size of the robe was also unusually perfect, making Mu Chen quite curious about its material.
There was no mirror in the room, but Martial Artists possessed Spiritual Power and could see their own appearance simply by releasing a sliver of it. This was exactly what Mu Chen did. Under the probe of his Spiritual Power, his new appearance was imprinted in his mind. The black robe was a bit wide but not unsightly. The high, stand-up collar covered his mouth, fastened by two buttons, leaving only the part of his face from his nose up exposed.
Clusters of red Fire Flames were scattered across the robe, and a soft glow seemed to flow within them. Nodding in satisfaction, Mu Chen picked up the black mask covered in red Runes from the table and gently placed it over his face. It was a perfect fit, covering his entire face.
He opened his eyes. A pair of pinkish-blue Ice Extreme Demon Pupils gazed out through the mask’s eyeholes. As the Xue Tong rotated, they exuded a soul-stirring Charm Power! Looking back at the table, the white outfit had indeed vanished, just as the projection had said.
Glancing at the door opposite the square table, Mu Chen walked over quickly and pulled it open. A blinding light shot into his eyes, making him dazed for a moment. When he opened his eyes again, a vast space appeared before him.
