Limitless Cultivation System: From Trash to Immortal

Chapter 216: First Light, First Blade

The sparring ground lay in the blue hour before sunrise, frost silvering the flagstones, the mountain holding its breath around them.

Qingyue walked to the centre and set her feet, and the training blade came off her shoulder into a low guard, and the challenge that had been playing on her mouth folded away into the wintered focus he’d first seen across an arena.

"Rules," she said. "First to yield, or first blade that would have ended it. No holding back because you like my face."

"I’d never." Xuan drew Marrow Dragon, and even the sound of it leaving the sheath was deeper now, a lower note than the blade had ever carried. "Same to you. I want to see what I’m dealing with, not what you think I can survive."

"Then stop talking and come find out."

He came. He opened with Awakening Dragon, blade low with the point toward the stone, weight sinking onto his back leg, reading her like you read a stranger before you trust them with anything real.

She didn’t take the bait. Frost bloomed out under her boots in a six-pointed flower, Frostbreath Step laying her field, and the temperature in the ring dropped enough that his next breath came out white. Smart. She’d turned the whole ground into her ally before a single blade had crossed.

’She’s establishing her zone before I’ve thrown anything.’

[ She’s not going to trade strength with you and she knows it, ] Mira murmured, watching with open interest. [ You’re a full realm above her now, Xuan. Foundation against Qi Gathering. She can’t out-muscle you and she wouldn’t be stupid enough to try. So she’s going to out-think you, freeze the ground you stand on, and make you fight in her house. Respect it. This is exactly how a smaller fighter beats a bigger one. ]

’She taught the smaller fighter a few things, back in that arena.’

Xuan tested the field with Piercing Dragon, a straight explosive thrust meant to make her move rather than to land, and she moved, but not away.

Her blade came across in a small tight circle and the frost went up his steel where it touched, Frostbind, biting at his wrist with a cold that tried to lock the joint. He felt the pull of it, the half-beat of stolen tempo, and in another life it would have lost him the exchange.

Not now. His channels ran open and deep, and the cold that would have seized a Qi Refining wrist slid off a Foundation one, and he flowed out of it into Coiling Dragon, wound her blade off its line, and tapped the flat of Marrow Dragon against her shoulder before she reset.

"One," he said.

Her eyes narrowed, not in anger, in recalculation. "You’ve changed. Not the sword. You. Your Qi’s a different weight entirely."

"Broke into Foundation two nights ago. Didn’t I mention?"

"You did not mention." Her mouth twitched despite herself. "That’s a filthy thing to spring on a woman mid-spar."

"You said no holding back."

She answered that with the whole of what she had.

Snowstorm Veil boiled up around her in a heartbeat, five paces of screaming white swallowing the centre of the ring, and her silhouette smeared and vanished inside it.

The world went to whirling snow and fractured light, visibility gone to nothing, and somewhere in that white she was moving, seeing perfectly through ice that answered only to her, and he was the blind one now.

’Clever girl. She can see and I can’t.’

[ She’s flipped the whole fight in one move. In there you’re deaf and half-blind and she’s got every advantage. Old you would be in serious trouble right about now. ] A beat, and he could hear the grin. [ But you’re not old you, and you’ve got a toy you haven’t used on a live target yet. Feel where she is, not where you see her. Then reach past the blade. ]

Xuan closed his eyes, which changed nothing and everything, and stopped trying to see. He felt instead: the pull of her frost, the cold coming off her core, the single point in the storm where the cold was densest and moving.

He raised Marrow Dragon, and he drew one slow horizontal arc through the blizzard toward that point, and for the first time in a live fight, his sword-intent left the steel.

The cut carried a full hand’s breadth past the tip of the blade, a ghost edge reaching across the gap the physical steel couldn’t cross, and it kissed the storm exactly where she stood.

Qingyue’s blizzard broke apart.

She’d thrown herself flat on instinct, and the snow-veil scattered off its anchor as her focus shattered, and she came up on one knee in the settling white with a thin line opened across the shoulder of her practice jacket where no blade had been within two feet of her.

For a heartbeat she just stared at the cut. Then she stared at him.

"Your sword," she said slowly, "reached me from over there."

"Dragonvein Core." Xuan couldn’t quite keep the delight out of it. "Turns out the intent doesn’t stop at the edge anymore. I can cut you from outside your reach now. It’s going to take some getting used to." He rolled the blade in his hand, the blue-green line catching the first grey light. "For both of us."

"That is deeply unfair." She rose, brushing snow off her knee, and there was something bright and competitive kindling under the frost now, a fighter who’d just discovered the puzzle had gotten harder and liked it. "You’ve a longer reach than your arm, a body a realm above mine, and a sword that ignores half of what I’d defend with. Remind me why I agreed to this."

"Because you wanted to know what I’m bringing to the war." He dropped back into guard and grinned at her through his own fogging breath. "This. I’m bringing this. Still want to keep going?"

Her answer was to drop into the coiled stance he knew led to only one thing, blade drawing back and low, cold gathering along its length toward a single wicked point.

Frostmoon Lance. She wasn’t playing for position anymore. She was coming to put a hole in him and see if his new realm could stop it.

[ Here she comes, and she’s done being polite, ] Mira said, delight and warning braided together. [ That lance is her real reach, and she’s aiming it to land. Show her yours.]
