Chapter 567 - 576: Capturing the Mutated Personnel
Before, he had thought they were all mindless.
He’d believed the only ones suffering were those who were still alive.
But now he was discovering that those who had turned into monsters were also in immense pain.
So, if there was no way to restore them to normal, it would be better to just kill them and grant them release. In a way, it would be a kindness.
At this thought, Mr. Magnus fell silent again. ’If that’s the case, then is our work to restore the Aberrants to normal a good thing or a bad thing for them?’
Discovering a cure in this field should have been a good thing, something that could prevent countless tragedies.
But for those who had already turned, it might be as much a curse as a blessing.
When they regained their senses and became human again, remembering all the things they did as monsters... wouldn’t they be driven mad with regret?
Especially for those who had killed their own family. For them, the pain and shock would be devastating.
Stella Sterling seemed to sense Mr. Magnus’s worries and said reassuringly, "Don’t overthink it. Not everyone is in that situation. Besides, don’t forget, we’re doing this to save those who were accidentally infected but haven’t completely turned yet."
"As for those who have already killed, whatever they decide to do after they regain their senses will be their own choice."
Stella Sterling’s voice was calm. She had once had similar thoughts to Professor Magnus.
But she had since come to a realization: besides those who had already killed, there were many innocent people.
For example, those who were accidentally bitten but hadn’t yet turned. If there was a chance to save people like that, it was obviously better to save them.
Otherwise, they would just end up as one of those monsters too.
Upon hearing this, Mr. Magnus nodded and said with a bitter smile, "You’re right, Sterling. We’re thinking too far ahead. Regardless, our most urgent task is to first confirm whether this medicine works against the virus."
Stella nodded, and neither of them spoke again until they arrived at Meridia Base.
Security at Meridia Base was even tighter than when Stella Sterling had last visited.
However, with Mr. Magnus’s status, no one dared to stop them. They were let in after a quick check confirmed that neither of them had any open wounds.
Mr. Magnus rushed to his laboratory. A short while later, he returned, beaming, and said to Stella Sterling, "Sterling, I’ve detected a component in here with an extremely strong life force! It also shows a powerful inhibitory effect against this virus, but we still need to confirm the specifics."
Stella Sterling nodded. "In that case, let’s go capture an Aberrant to test it on."
Mr. Magnus said with concern, "Capturing an Aberrant is easier said than done. They feel no pain. Other than killing them, capturing one alive is next to impossible. It will be very difficult to test the medicine’s effects on them!"
But Stella Sterling just smiled. "Don’t worry, leave it to me."
With that, Stella Sterling turned to leave.
Mr. Magnus grabbed her arm. "Sterling, we should let the people from Meridia Base handle this. It’s too dangerous!"
Seeing the worry in his eyes, Stella Sterling smiled. "No one else could do this as safely or as quickly as I can."
With her current abilities, capturing an Aberrant and bringing it back would be a simple task.
If anyone else were to try, it would be questionable whether they could even capture one alive. A single mistake, and they would become the prey.
Before Mr. Magnus could react, she was already gone.
Mr. Magnus couldn’t even stop her.
His eyes were filled with worry as he watched her leave.
However, it wasn’t long before Stella Sterling returned, carrying a completely unconscious Aberrant. It was still alive, merely knocked out.
The personnel at Meridia Base recognized Stella Sterling. When they saw what she was carrying, their expressions changed, and they aimed their guns at her. "Miss Sterling, what is the meaning of this?"
Meridia Base had suffered a similar outbreak before, and they had only managed to purge all the Aberrants with great difficulty.
Things had only been quiet at Meridia Base for a few days, and now Miss Sterling was bringing an Aberrant right to them. What did she think she was doing? ’Is she trying to get us all killed?’
If that Aberrant were to escape and bite one of their members, it would plunge the base into chaos all over again.
If Miss Sterling hadn’t been brought here by Mr. Magnus, they would have opened fire on her long ago for a stunt like this. The fact that they were still questioning her politely showed how much respect they had for her.
Stella Sterling glanced at the person in her grasp, then explained to the men pointing their guns at her, "This is my catch. It’s a test subject."
Seeing that they were still looking at her uneasily, Stella Sterling didn’t make things difficult for them. "If you’re that worried," she said, "go get Mr. Magnus."
’She knew they would never let her in while she was carrying an Aberrant.’
’Her relationship with Meridia Base had always been friendly, so she didn’t want to use force. Her only option was to have them summon Mr. Magnus.’
The men continued to watch Stella Sterling warily, but after hearing her words, they exchanged a glance, and one of them went to report the situation.
The remaining men simply kept a vigilant watch on Stella Sterling, making no move against her.
Everyone present knew Stella Sterling’s identity as the leader of Caeluna Base. Since Meridia Base and Caeluna Base currently had a good relationship, they naturally wouldn’t attack her.
Besides, this Miss Sterling was a familiar face who had always had a good relationship with their base.
They knew she was a friend of Captain Young’s. They had even heard that she was one of the reasons their own base hadn’t been thrown into widespread chaos a while back.
So for all these reasons, they would not lay a hand on her.
If she weren’t holding that terrifying Aberrant, they would have let her in long ago.
With this in mind, one of the men spoke apologetically to Stella Sterling. "Sorry, Miss Sterling. The thing you’re holding is just too dangerous. We can’t take the risk, so we have to do this. I hope you can understand."
