Chapter 389 - 389: Ren vs. Water God Dragon
"I'm going to make my move. Be careful," Ren said to Mercphobia, his voice calm but laced with a clear warning.
Mercphobia simply smiled, his demeanor completely relaxed as he stood upon the gentle waves. "Come!"
He truly didn't believe that the human standing before him could pose any genuine threat to his life. Such was the inherent, unshakable pride of the Water God Dragon, a being whose power rivaled the apocalypse itself.
Without another word, Ren raised his arm and flicked his wrist, hurling a three-pronged kunai directly at Mercphobia. The black iron blade sailed through the salty air, catching the sunlight.
Seeing the simple projectile approach, Mercphobia didn't care in the slightest. As an ancient dragon, his physical defense was one of his greatest attributes.
Forget such a small, insignificant kunai; even the legendary enchanted blades wielded by the strongest human knights couldn't hope to leave a scratch on his scales. Just as Mercphobia casually raised a hand, intending to lazily swat the weapon away, the atmosphere warped.
Whoosh—!
A blinding flash of yellow light erased the distance between them. Ren instantly materialized in the exact space the kunai occupied, appearing right in front of Mercphobia's face.
Before the Dragon God could even blink, a swirling, high-density sphere of azure energy roared to life in Ren's palm. It was the Rasengan, grinding the air around it with deafening intensity.
Mercphobia's expression immediately shifted from amusement to shock, but his body was simply too slow to react to instantaneous teleportation.
Bang!
The grinding sphere of chakra slammed mercilessly into Mercphobia's abdomen. The sheer kinetic force of the spiraling energy twisted against his draconic flesh, generating a massive shockwave that blew the surrounding seawater into the air.
"Ugh!" Mercphobia let out a sharp grunt of pain as his feet left the surface.
His body was launched backward like a fired cannonball. He was sent skipping violently across the churning ocean, his boots carving deep, white-crested trenches into the water for quite a distance before he finally managed to dig his heels in and grind to a halt.
Space Magic? Mercphobia thought, placing a hand over his stinging stomach.
Ren's sudden strike contained enough concentrated destructive force to completely shatter the organs of most elite Mages. But for Mercphobia, it was merely akin to being punched by a brawling tavern drunk.
It hurt a bit upon impact, but that was the extent of it. It couldn't even be considered a flesh wound against his passive draconic durability.
However, despite remaining largely unharmed, the Water God Dragon was still genuinely surprised by the nature of Ren's magic. It was entirely too fast. In all his centuries of life, Mercphobia had never seen Space Magic executed with such rapid, seamless fluidity.
"You could say that!" Ren called out across the water, easily reading the unspoken question on the dragon's face.
The Flying Thunder God Technique was fundamentally a Space-Time Ninjutsu in his original system. Yet, when adapted to the fundamental laws of Earth Land, it naturally fell under the broad, highly advanced category of Space Magic.
"I see. That strange weapon acted as a spatial coordinate just now, didn't it?" Mercphobia analyzed, his eyes narrowing with newfound interest. "You can instantaneously teleport to the exact location of that weapon and then launch a point-blank attack."
The dragon brushed the water off his coat, standing a little taller. "Interesting. It seems I underestimated you right out of the gate. I suppose I'll have to get a bit more serious now."
Mercphobia's blood began to pump a little faster. He had grown genuinely curious and wanted to test Ren's limits properly. He needed to see the true depths of this human's strength, to determine whether he actually had the power to fight Acnologia as he had so boldly claimed.
Without warning, Mercphobia casually raised his open palm toward the sky.
Boom!!
The ocean beneath Ren instantly rebelled. A massive, roaring pillar of highly compressed seawater erupted right from beneath Ren's feet, violently carrying him high up into the air amidst a shower of white foam.
Suspended in the sky, Ren didn't panic in the slightest. He quickly adjusted his center of gravity mid-air, analyzing his surroundings.
He had to admit that fighting on the open ocean was slightly disadvantageous. It wasn't nearly as convenient to set up a sprawling kunai formation with magical markers on shifting waves as it was on solid ground. But as long as his reaction speed remained sharp, the unstable terrain didn't matter much.
Ren calmly waved his hand, his fingers moving in a blur as he threw out several more marked kunai in a wide arc.
Swish!
Before gravity could drag him back down to the surging sea, Ren's figure vanished in another brilliant flash of yellow light.
Mercphobia was momentarily stunned, his eyes darting frantically across the sky and the water below as he quickly searched for the mage's new location.
But Ren had already materialized directly behind Mercphobia. Using the momentum from his teleportation, Ren lashed out with a devastating, chakra-infused roundhouse kick aimed straight for the back of the dragon's neck.
Bang—!
A thick, swirling curtain of condensed water suddenly erupted from the ocean surface, forming an impenetrable wall between them. Ren's shin slammed heavily into the liquid barrier, sending violent ripples across its surface, but failing to break through.
Mercphobia smiled, looking over his shoulder through the watery distortion. "I already suffered from that exact trick once just now. Naturally, I prepared my magical defense in advance this time."
Hum—!
Before Ren could retract his leg and retreat, several high-speed whirlpools suddenly appeared on the surface of the water curtain. The liquid began to compress and spin at terrifying velocities.
Sizzle—!
Immediately after, a blindingly fast jet of hyper-compressed water shot out from the center of the whirlpool. This high-pressure water jet was comparable to an industrial water cutter, a deadly, focused stream of liquid that could effortlessly slice through solid steel vaults.
Swish—!
The very moment the lethal water jet pierced the air, tearing through the space where Ren's chest had just been, the golden-haired mage had already disappeared again.
"So fast!" Mercphobia muttered aloud, watching the water jet slice cleanly through a distant cloud bank.
The Water God Dragon couldn't help but marvel at the sheer tactical efficiency of Ren's Flying Thunder God Technique. The transfer speed and lack of casting time of this specific Space Magic were truly incredible, leaving absolutely no openings to exploit.
"If you keep fighting like this, constantly shifting through space, it seems I really have no practical way of dealing a decisive blow to you," Mercphobia admitted.
He spread his hands in a gesture of temporary surrender and spoke frankly to Ren, fully acknowledging that his current, casual use of water magic had no counter for instantaneous teleportation.
"Uh... sorry about that," Ren replied, reappearing a safe distance away and scratching the back of his head sheepishly. "This is just the magic that the character I've taken over is best at utilizing. It's built on speed and misdirection."
Ren looked down at the undulating waves beneath his feet. "If we were fighting on solid land and I had a few moments to properly set up my formula formation, I could easily teleport dozens or even hundreds of times in a single instant. Combined with the explosive attack from earlier, I can usually end a battle before the enemy even realizes it has begun."
"Hundreds of times in an instant?!"
Mercphobia was visibly shocked, his stoic composure breaking. If the opponent's consecutive spatial transfer speed was truly that fast, and he could sustain it without draining his magic reserves, he would be a truly terrifying opponent for anyone to face.
"Do we need to change battlefields then?" Mercphobia offered, genuinely wanting to see the peak of Ren's abilities. "We can move toward the coast."
"No need for that," Ren waved him off confidently. "I was just acting on old habits. I know it's completely impossible to defeat you using that state alone. I'm going to get serious now, so you'd better prepare to transform into your true dragon form."
"Is that so?" Mercphobia chuckled, thoroughly amused. "Then I'm actually looking forward to it."
The Water God Dragon didn't care much for Ren's audacious warning. Although he couldn't exert his absolute full strength while confined to this fragile human form, a dragon was still a dragon. He simply wouldn't be defeated so easily by a human.
Ignoring the dragon's casual arrogance, Ren closed his eyes. He focused his mind, drawing his scattered magic inward, and calmed his breathing until his chest rose and fell in perfect, steady rhythm.
"Kurama Mode!" Ren commanded, his voice echoing across the silent ocean.
Swish—!
The air around Ren violently distorted. His physical body began to change, his normal clothing seemingly breaking down and transforming into something resembling brilliant, flowing golden particles.
In the span of a single heartbeat, his entire being was cloaked in a blazing shroud of pure, golden chakra. Intricate black magatama patterns bloomed across his collar, and a blinding radiance erupted from his form like a miniature sun descending upon the earth.
A suffocating, overwhelmingly powerful aura blasted outward from Ren. The sheer ambient heat and pressure radiating from his new form caused the surrounding sea to wildly surge, bubble, and actively boil beneath his feet.
Seeing this terrifying display of raw, unrestrained energy, the previously relaxed and smiling Mercphobia couldn't help but turn completely serious. His draconic instincts flared, warning him of a genuine, lethal threat.
"Here I come!" Ren roared, his voice layered with the deep, resonant growl of a beast.
Boom—!
Ren stomped his foot against the water, generating a concussive shockwave that carved a massive crater into the ocean beneath him. He lunged toward Mercphobia, moving so fast he appeared as nothing more than a solid beam of golden light.
Mercphobia reacted instantly. He raised his arm, and a tremendously thick, heavily compressed water curtain violently erupted from the sea, completely blocking his front.
Ren didn't bother dodging or teleporting this time. He simply pulled back his arm, his chakra manifesting into a massive, golden claw, and slapped his hand directly into the center of the water curtain.
Boom—!!!
The sound of the impact was deafening. The massive water curtain, capable of stopping artillery fire, exploded outward instantly, vaporizing into a thick cloud of white steam.
"What?!" Mercphobia's eyes widened in sheer disbelief, his calm facade entirely shattered.
This seemingly fragile water curtain was actually a highly concentrated, incredibly powerful defensive magic. More importantly, the liquid flowing within it was heavily infused with the dense, conceptual Dragon Force of Mercphobia himself.
By all known laws of the world, normal magic should have been completely nullified against it. Yet, this absolute draconic defense was effortlessly, brutally shattered by a single, brute-force claw strike from Ren.
Before Mercphobia's mind could fully process his shock, Ren closed the remaining distance. The golden chakra claw slammed mercilessly into the center of the Dragon God's chest.
Bang—!
Mercphobia immediately felt a terrifying, bone-rattling impact radiate from the claw. It was as if he hadn't been struck by a man, but rather rammed head-on by a massive, falling mountain made of solid iron.
"Argh—!!"
Mercphobia let out a genuine cry of agony, the wind violently knocked from his lungs. The sheer physical force of the blow lifted him entirely off the ocean's surface.
His body tumbled backward, skipping and crashing across the sea's turbulent surface. He tore through the water like a skipped stone, hurtling backward for over a thousand meters and leaving a massive wake of destruction behind him before he finally ground to a halt.
Pfft!
Clutching his bruised chest, Mercphobia spat a mouthful of dark, clotted blood into the ocean. Expelling the damaged blood finally made the immense pressure in his chest ease, allowing his draconic healing to properly kick in.
Wiping his chin, Mercphobia slowly looked up through the dissipating steam at the glowing golden figure hovering in the distance. His slitted eyes turned deadly serious.
From enduring that single, overwhelming strike alone, the Water God Dragon knew without a shadow of a doubt that he had vastly underestimated the human standing before him.
Initially, he had been absolutely certain that the man was just a remarkably fast human Mage. More importantly, he lacked the specific scent of a Dragon Slayer Mage. According to the absolute laws of magic, that meant this human couldn't possibly possess the conceptual power to harm a dragon's scales.
But the brutal, aching pain radiating from his chest, and the metallic taste of his own blood on his tongue, proved that theory dead wrong. Ren's strike made Mercphobia realize that what the golden-haired mage had said before wasn't a boast born of arrogance.
This guy truly, genuinely possessed the monstrous strength required to kill a dragon in head-on combat.
Instead of anger, the corners of Mercphobia's mouth slowly curled up. A wild, unhinged smile appeared on his normally gentle face.
"Very good!" Mercphobia laughed, his voice rumbling across the ocean.
Wasn't this exact scenario what he had always yearned for in the deepest, darkest corners of his heart? A way to be stopped? A power great enough to end his life if his magic ever truly went out of control?
"Ren!" the Dragon God bellowed, his eyes flashing with ancient power. "Let me see if you can truly fulfill my wish!"
Boom—!!
A terrifying, suffocating wave of pure Dragon Force erupted from Mercphobia's body. The sky instantly darkened as his aura expanded, twisting the atmosphere and causing the entirety of the surrounding ocean to churn and rise into massive, towering tsunamis.
Meanwhile, miles away from the epicenter of the clash, the trio from the Diabolos dark guild suddenly halted their advance. They could feel the very air vibrating against their skin.
Madmole, the heavily armored Dragon Eater, snapped his head toward the distant horizon, his eyes wide with palpable surprise.
"Is that the Water God Dragon?!" Madmole shouted over the rising winds. "What the hell is going on over there? Why is that guy suddenly releasing such terrifying Magic Power?!"
