Chapter 385 - 385: Blade Dragon
"Valued guest, what do you think of this room?" The waiter's polite voice broke the silence as he led Ren into the inn's upper quarters.
The room was surprisingly clean and tidy, furnished with polished wooden floors and an expansive window overlooking the coastal streets. Ren swept his gaze across the space, quite satisfied upon seeing the comfortable arrangement.
"Hmm, not bad at all," Ren said with an approving nod, setting his sights on the plush bed. "I'll take it."
"As long as you are satisfied, sir." The waiter bowed deeply. "Oh, right! I almost forgot to mention something crucial."
He pointed toward a small, crystalline bottle resting conspicuously on the bedside table. It was filled with a faintly glowing blue liquid.
"Please ensure you drink the complimentary beverage provided before going to sleep," the waiter instructed, his tone suddenly deadpan. "If you do not, it will be physically impossible for a human to survive the night here. Farewell!"
Without waiting for a response, the waiter turned on his heel and swiftly exited the room, closing the door behind him.
Ren blinked, glancing at the conspicuous drink placed on the table. Truthfully, he was hesitant to blindly ingest a concoction of unknown origin, especially on a foreign continent.
However, his enhanced senses picked up no lethal toxins or malicious magical signatures within the liquid. Furthermore, considering he had already eaten the inn's food without issue, there was no logical reason for them to go out of their way to poison a bedside drink.
Trusting his instincts, Ren popped the stopper and downed the beverage. The taste was surprisingly refreshing, reminiscent of a sweet melon mixed with a hint of salty sea breeze.
After finishing the drink, Ren tossed the empty bottle aside and flopped onto the soft bed. The exhaustion of his travels quickly caught up to him, and he fell into a deep, dreamless slumber after only a few moments.
Hours passed. In the dead of night, a strange, chilling sensation washed over Ren's body.
Opening his eyes, he was greeted by a surreal, ethereal blue light filtering into his room. To his absolute astonishment, he found himself completely submerged in water, floating inches above his mattress.
"Water?" Ren muttered aloud. Bubbles escaped his lips, but he felt no burning in his lungs.
Despite being completely enveloped by the ocean, he could breathe as freely as if he were standing on dry land. The magical beverage he had consumed earlier was clearly taking effect, altering his physiology to adapt to the submerged environment.
Ren swam toward the window and pushed it open, looking out at the sprawling cityscape. The entire town of Elmina was now submerged beneath the crashing waves of the sea.
Schools of luminous, bioluminescent fish swam past the glass, darting between the rooftops and coral-encrusted streetlamps. The once-bustling coastal town had transformed into a breathtaking underwater city.
"I see. So that drink was an enchanted potion meant to allow humans to breathe underwater," Ren realized, a smile tugging at his lips.
It was a truly novel experience. In all his travels across Earth Land and beyond, he had rarely encountered an entire society built around such a massive, daily environmental shift.
Finding the phenomenon far too interesting to sleep through, Ren swam out of the window, effortlessly gliding over the flooded streets. The water resistance felt practically nonexistent as he maneuvered through the submerged alleyways.
"Our guest was very cooperative and drank the potion! How wonderful!" a cheerful, bubbly voice suddenly echoed through the water.
Ren turned and saw a moderately sized fish with oddly human-like eyes swimming up to him. Even in this transformed state, Ren immediately recognized the distinct magical signature of the hotel's front desk waiter.
"That potion helps creatures other than fish adapt to life underwater," the fish explained, blowing a small cluster of bubbles. "Forgive the late introduction. I am the owner of The Journey Inn; please, call me Kasma."
"Kasma, what exactly is going on with this city?" Ren asked, adjusting his buoyancy to float alongside the talking fish.
"It's nothing major, sir, just high tide," Kasma replied casually, swaying his fins. "Our city has always been a haven for fish. So, in reality, this is Elmina's true appearance."
Ren looked up at the distant, shimmering surface of the water far above them. "High tide? That is quite the tide indeed!"
"Indeed it is! Please enjoy your evening stroll, valued guest," Kasma chirped happily.
Right at that moment—
BOOM—!
A deafening explosion tore through the water in the distance, sending violent, concussive shockwaves rippling through the submerged city. A towering stone building collapsed into rubble, kicking up a massive cloud of underwater silt and debris.
Countless schools of fish were instantly startled by the violent tremor, frantically fleeing in all directions to escape the danger zone.
"Water God Dragon! Come out!" an arrogant, piercing female voice rang out from the site of the explosion, amplified by powerful magic.
"Hmm?" Ren raised an eyebrow, his gaze shifting toward the rising plume of silt. "Someone's here looking for trouble with the Water God Dragon?"
Ren hadn't expected that on his very first night in Elmina, he would stumble across someone foolish enough to actively provoke a being supposedly on par with Acnologia.
"What?! An attack?!" Kasma shrieked, his fish eyes widening in absolute horror. "Guest, flee quickly! It isn't safe!"
The innkeeper frantically swam in circles, completely panicked by the sudden destruction and urging Ren to retreat back to his room.
"It's fine," Ren replied casually, crossing his arms as he hovered in place. "I'm just going to watch the show."
"The show... No, don't joke around!" Kasma pleaded, his fins trembling. "If Lord Water God Dragon gets angry, it'll be disastrous! The whole town could be wiped out!"
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
Before Kasma could finish his warning, a terrifying barrage of cutting magic tore through the water. A large swath of residential buildings was cleanly sliced apart, their upper halves sliding off and crashing into the seafloor below.
Oh? This is interesting, Ren mused, his eyes narrowing as he analyzed the residual magic power left by the slashes.
The attacker certainly wasn't weak. Their magic carried a sharp, predatory edge that felt eerily similar to a Dragon Slayer's aura. Intrigued, Ren ignored Kasma's protests and swam toward the direction of the destruction.
Soon, he arrived at the edge of the ruined plaza and saw three people floating amidst the debris: a woman and two men.
Leading the assault was a wild-looking woman with spiky blonde hair, her hands wreathed in concentrated, claw-like magical energy. The devastating slashes she casually threw out were effortlessly slicing through the stone buildings.
"Hmm? Someone's approaching," a deep, gruff voice echoed through the water.
A heavily built man encased in thick, impenetrable-looking armor shifted his gaze toward Ren, his expression stoic and unreadable beneath his helmet.
The two people beside him immediately paused their rampage, turning their cold, assessing gazes toward the newcomer.
"The Water God Dragon?" Kyria muttered, her eyes lighting up.
Assuming the approaching figure was the mighty entity they had been hunting, Kyria licked her lips, looking at Ren with a wildly excited and predatory gaze. She gripped her magical claws, ready to strike.
Standing beside her was a tall, slender man wearing eerie bone armor and a skull-like helmet that obscured his lower face. Skullion Raider simply shook his head, his tone dripping with disappointment.
"You're mistaken, Kyria," Skullion stated calmly, analyzing Ren's scent. "He's just a human. He bears no scent of a Dragon."
"A human?! Tsk! What a waste of time!" Kyria sneered, instantly losing all interest in Ren upon hearing he was just a mundane human.
[Akarin's Note: The dark guild 'Diabolos' originates from the Northern Continent of Guiltina. She was here exclusively to hunt the Water God Dragon. As a Dragon Eater, she knew that if she could kill the beast and devour its flesh, her strength would transcend its current limits and reach an entirely new, unfathomable tier.
"Water God Dragon! Stop hiding and come out!!" Kyria screamed into the water, her patience completely exhausted.
She ruthlessly continued her attacks, unleashing a flurry of razor-sharp magical blades into the surrounding architecture, aiming to force the Water God Dragon out of hiding.
Their guild had thoroughly investigated before coming to Guiltina's coast. The residents here all worshiped the Water God Dragon, and the massive beast supposedly protected this town with his life.
They had staked out the area for a long time without finding the deity's exact location. So, they decided they might as well turn this entire submerged city upside down and slaughter its people to force the guardian out.
Suddenly, the entire ocean began to tremble.
RUMBLE—!!
A terrifying, unfathomable wave of magical power descended upon the town. The very surface of the sea violently split apart, tearing into several huge, echoing fissures that stretched across the horizon.
The surging seawater at the edges of the fissures was held back by an invisible, absolute force, standing tall like a natural, impenetrable chasm that was impossible to cross. The flooded town was instantly drained, exposed to the night sky once again as millions of tons of seawater were magically forced away.
"Lord... Lord Water God Dragon!" Kasma, who had followed Ren from a safe distance, cried out. Tears of reverence welled in his fish eyes upon seeing the descending figure.
Ren casually landed on the now-dry cobblestone street, looking up at the person hovering in the center of the parted sea.
He took the form of a young man with a slender, elegant build. He possessed long, wavy blue hair, a distinctive tide-like tattoo beneath his right eye, and a pair of majestic twin horns protruding from his head.
It was one of the ultimate targets of the Hundred Year Quest—the Water God Dragon, Mercphobia.
"My sea is certainly quite lively tonight," Water God Dragon Mercphobia said calmly, his voice echoing with the weight of an ancient deity as he slowly descended toward the plaza.
Seeing the Water God Dragon actually appear in the flesh, Kyria licked her lips. A twisted, bloodthirsty expression twisted her features, completely masking any sense of fear.
"You really showed up," Kyria laughed, her magical power flaring wildly around her. "I've waited a long time for this exact moment. Die, Water God Dragon, and become my nourishment!"
"Blade Dragon's Twin Sunder!"
Kyria stomped hard against the ground, shattering the stone beneath her. She launched herself toward the Water God Dragon like a fired cannonball, crossing her arms to unleash a devastating, cross-shaped twin strike.
The massive blades of magical energy tore through the air, completely distorting the atmosphere as they closed in on Mercphobia's neck.
The Water God Dragon simply raised his right palm, his expression completely unchanging.
BOOM—!
Kyria's ultimate strike hit the dead center of the Water God Dragon's bare palm. A massive shockwave erupted, but instead of piercing his flesh, the deadly magical blades shattered into harmless sparks of light and vanished entirely.
"What?!" Kyria gasped, her pupils shrinking in shock.
She hadn't expected her full-powered strike to inflict absolutely zero damage upon the Water God Dragon's physical body.
Immediately after nullifying her attack, a dense, swirling sphere of blue water materialized in the Water God Dragon's palm. Without a moment's hesitation, a hyper-compressed jet of water shot forth, aiming directly at Kyria's chest.
Kyria hadn't anticipated such blinding speed from the deity's counterattack. Caught in mid-air, she was a fraction of a second too slow to completely evade the lethal stream of high-pressure water.
SWISH!
A massive, heavily armored figure suddenly flickered into existence, interposing himself directly in front of Kyria to intercept the blow.
BOOM—!
The Water God Dragon's concentrated attack landed flush against the man's chest. The sheer, overwhelming impact caused the surrounding walls of seawater to churn and boil violently.
However, as the mist cleared, the man stood his ground, completely unharmed beneath his impenetrable magical plating.
"I am the Armor Dragon, Madmole," the giant man introduced himself stoically, brushing off the residual water from his metallic scales. "Pleased to meet you, Dragon God."
Kyria clicked her tongue, landing gracefully behind him. "Cut the nonsense, Madmole. Help me kill this guy right now."
Madmole remained completely tense, keeping his guard up. "I must remind you, Your Highness Kyria, this is not an opponent that can be easily defeated. His magic power is on an entirely different scale."
"If he were that easy to defeat, there would be no point in hunting him in the first place!" Kyria barked, her battle lust only growing stronger.
Although her previous attack was effortlessly blocked by the Water God Dragon, it seemed completely normal to her. After all, she was facing a myth, and she still hadn't used her full, unbridled power.
"Take this! Blade Dragon's Overlord Sword!"
Kyria swung her claws with devastating force once again, releasing a massive, singular slash that threatened to cleave the very sky in half.
In response, the Water God Dragon elegantly waved his hand, condensing the moisture in the air to release a towering, crescent-shaped water blade.
BOOM—!
The two colossal slashes collided in mid-air, creating a blinding flash of light before dissipating together in an explosive shower of rain.
"Blade Dragon's Roar!"
Refusing to give him a moment to breathe, Kyria opened her mouth and let loose a terrifying, earth-shattering roar. The concentrated sound waves transformed into thousands of microscopic, razor-sharp slashes, hurtling directly toward the Water God Dragon.
Sensing the incoming threat, Mercphobia simply flicked his wrist. A thick, impenetrable wall of swirling water immediately appeared in front of him, flawlessly blocking and absorbing the destructive roar.
"You have disturbed my city long enough," Mercphobia stated coldly.
The Water God Dragon swept his palms outward in a synchronized motion. Instantly, across the towering walls of the parted sea on either side of the plaza, massive, violent whirlpools began to form.
Then, with a deafening roar, a multitude of colossal water pillars erupted from the whirlpools, rushing relentlessly toward Kyria, Madmole, and Skullion to crush them into dust.
