Chapter 42
Ch.42 Trying to Lure Her Away
Watching the little wolf-girl struggling in agony ahead, Luo Nan furrowed his brow.
‘Hey, Cheat Device Miss—is this whole situation your doing?’
Though Luo Nan didn’t want to get entangled with the original plot’s female leads, that didn’t mean he enjoyed seeing them suffer needlessly.
He asked himself: after awakening his past-life memories, had his values become so blurred between right and wrong, good and evil, as described in The Shining Myriad Trails?
No—Luo Nan knew himself best. Even before awakening his past-life memories, he had never truly been an evil villain in the literal sense.
After all, someone who wraps himself in disguise—even if he’s bad—how bad could he really be?
He played the role of a foolish clown, a spoiled young master—not an actual terrorist.
He felt he needed to ask Cheat Device Miss—to understand whether Zhixia Cangya’s sudden loss of control was connected to his interference.
[Luo Nan, some things… you cannot stop.]
‘I know that already. I’m well aware of my own level—I don’t intend to stop any world-ending crisis at all! I just want to escape my own predetermined tragic fate!’
‘First came the false accusations at Serela’s homecoming banquet—I barely managed to muddy the waters and survive it. Then came real assassination attempts—I dodged them thanks to your warning. Then came the messy noble faction infighting that followed like pulling up a radish and dragging up its mud. Then came the Abyssal infiltrators…’
Luo Nan complained mentally to Cheat Device Miss: ‘All I want now is to avoid the upcoming ‘collaboration with the demon race’ storyline, live peacefully as a nobleman, stay far away from all the protagonists who will shine brightly in the future, and distance myself from this world’s swirling fate.’
Luo Nan suddenly paused. ‘Er… although meeting Zhixia Cangya was my own fault—I couldn’t resist my curiosity.’
‘But Cheat Device Miss, you know me. Now that I’ve awakened my past-life memories, I won’t stand idly by and watch innocent people suffer consequences caused by my actions.’
‘Yes—even if she is one of the female leads.’
[…]
[I understand perfectly, Luo Nan.]
[But destiny has its own predetermined path. Everything will inevitably return to the route it was meant to follow.]
[Just like you—even after successfully surviving the initial crisis, aren’t you now actively preparing for the next crisis you remember coming?]
‘I was just…’
[But you’ve always assumed, deep down, that the next crisis will inevitably happen, haven’t you?]
Hearing this, Luo Nan suddenly realized—he had never once doubted whether the next collaboration with the demon race crisis would occur, even under butterfly effect conditions.
After thinking for a moment, he replied: ‘In my memory, the demon race route, the empire route, and the hero route were entirely separate in their early stages—they shouldn’t influence each other.’
[So you still firmly believe destiny will come.]
‘…’
[Then why can’t you accept Zhixia Cangya’s predetermined fate?]
Luo Nan fell silent. Ever since awakening his past-life memories, he had been running nonstop to change his own tragic fate—as if he had never questioned whether that ‘predetermined fate’ would actually manifest.
‘Maybe you’re right, Cheat Device Miss. Perhaps I still believe in that so-called destiny.’
‘But it doesn’t matter. Truly, it doesn’t matter. Since I foresaw the future, taking corresponding precautions based on what I saw—that’s my own choice. In the end, whether I succeed or fail, I won’t regret it.’
Luo Nan looked again at the petite figure enveloped in steaming blood mist. He could hear the mournful cries emerging from her throat, and even smell the faint warmth of blood.
‘But this situation is different. Zhixia Cangya’s fate changed because of my intervention. Therefore, her current suffering bears my cause. So I feel I must personally resolve it.’
‘Even if you represent fate itself. Even if Zhixia Cangya’s current condition was triggered by you—I still must…’
[Luo Nan, aside from that one time when I interfered in your dealings with the ‘Chosen Hero,’ haven’t all your other actions followed your own will?]
[So your actions require no approval from me. You are not my puppet, and I am not your mentor.]
‘Oh? So you mean…’
‘Fine. Since you’ve said it this plainly—if I just stand here watching, wouldn’t that tarnish the reputation of Luo Nan von Medillion?’
[…]
After bickering with Cheat Device Miss and temporarily casting aside his lingering doubts, Luo Nan no longer hesitated. He turned to the guard standing nearby, who still didn’t know what to do.
“Mr. Polat, please go ahead. Zhixia Cangya’s body has developed some issues—I need to examine her privately.”
“As you wish, Mr. Crow.”
Upon receiving Luo Nan’s permission, Polat’s massive figure immediately sprinted toward the market, without a single backward glance.
“Alright, now let’s see how to save this idiot.”
“Ugh… hss…”
As Luo Nan approached, the trembling little wolf-girl growled lowly, a sound filled with threat.
“Zhixia Cangya, do you recognize me?”
“Stay… away from me…”
The girl curled her body, crawling on all fours. As Luo Nan drew closer, she slowly retreated backward.
Blood dripping from her body formed a thin red stream along the ground.
“Sigh… this thing still has some sanity left—but not much.”
Thinking this, Luo Nan no longer hesitated. He reached into his chest and pulled out a small blue vial designed to calm the spirit.
“How do I get close to her? It looks like she really doesn’t want to come near me.”
Luo Nan reached up and rubbed his nose—then remembered he was still wearing his mask.
“Wait… I recall this golden raven-beak mask I’m currently wearing is modeled after ancient horror aesthetics, right? Wearing this mask, I definitely can’t appear friendly.”
“I won’t boast—but I believe my natural face comes with inherent social bonuses, especially when dealing with children like Zhixia Cangya, whose psychological age is still immature.”
After thinking for a moment, Luo Nan made his decision: “Since no one’s around here anyway, I can put it back on later.”
Thinking this, Luo Nan removed the mask he’d worn all night—for the first time, revealing his true face.
“Hope this works.”
Luo Nan forced himself to smile gently toward the out-of-control wolf-girl, holding out the calming blue vial, speaking softly: “You must be in terrible pain. Come here—I have medicine to heal your wounds and ease your pain.”
“How am I even managing to look like some creepy old man luring a little girl with a lollipop?”
Luo Nan’s behavior did have some effect. When the little wolf-girl watched his slow motion of removing the mask, she stopped retreating.
Seeing this, Luo Nan moved forward step by step, attempting to offer the medicine to the out-of-control girl.
Whoosh—
“What?! Why did you just bite me?!”
