Chapter 328: - 328: Return
The doors opened to the Golden Court, and Liam walked into the largest ceremony he had ever seen.
The western side of the imperial palace stood completely open to the sky. What had once seemed like the outer wall of the court had withdrawn into the adjoining towers, turning the entire ceremonial hall into a vast terrace suspended above Deira. Tiered galleries spread in long arcs to either side, filled with nobles, officials, military houses, provincial representatives, and the ancient families of Nuria. Gold and white banners descended between pale stone columns. Ether burned in scripted lines beneath the floors, through the rails, and across the high arches overhead until the whole court seemed alive with light.
Beyond it, Deira stretched in layers of suspended land, bridges, towers, gardens, and luminous formations. The floating islands of the capital shone beneath the morning sky, each district linked by pale spans of stone and gold. Water fell in silver lines from upper gardens. Old structures built into the higher lands glimmered with awakened wards. Everywhere Liam looked, Nuria appeared grander, brighter, and older than any empire had a right to be.
The ceremonial bells faded.
Silence settled over the court.
Liam felt the ether first.
It stirred beneath the stone, then rose in a warm current around his shoes and up the length of his body. The recognition spread through him with startling intimacy, answering something deeper than title or position. Gold flashed at the edge of his vision. His eyes shifted before he could stop them, crimson yielding to sovereign gold beneath the attention of the empire.
A murmur moved through the galleries.
Arik turned his head slightly toward him.
Liam met his gaze and gave the smallest nod.
He was fine.
The ether wound around them both, but as Arik stepped forward, the difference became clear.
The currents converged on him.
Gold ignited across the entire court in a single sweeping pulse. Light raced through the columns, spread beneath the terraces, crossed the galleries, and spilled outward into the city. Bridges answered. Towers answered. Suspended districts answered. Deira brightened level by level until the whole capital stood inside a web of living ether.
Thousands of people bowed their heads.
Arik walked toward the throne.
His ceremonial black and gold caught the light with every step. The mantle at his shoulders flowed behind him, and sovereign ether moved visibly through the dark ends of his hair, turning them gold where the power gathered too densely to remain hidden. Liam’s own clothing suddenly felt simpler by comparison, though Rubis had certainly done his best to make that impossible.
At the center of the Golden Court rose the throne.
It stood on a black stone dais veined with gold, as though it had emerged directly from the Core beneath the palace. Behind it, vast circular formations turned slowly in the air, layered with ancient script and old imperial geometry. The moving rings cast shifting light over the polished floor and over Cassian, who stood waiting before the throne in full ceremonial robes.
He looked older this morning.
Not weaker.
Just burdened by the weight of history finally arriving where it had always meant to go.
Arik stopped before him.
Cassian bowed deep enough to honor the sovereign.
His voice carried clearly through the entire court.
"The Core recognized you before your oath. It recognized your blood, your soul, and your claim. It kept this empire through silence, through absence, and through time. Today it receives its sovereign."
The gold behind Arik brightened.
Cassian lifted his gaze.
"Will you take Nuria as yours?"
Arik’s expression did not change, but the bond between him and Liam tightened with quiet force. For one brief instant, Arik looked toward Liam. Then he faced the throne and the empire waiting beyond it.
"Yes."
The Core answered him at once.
Gold surged upward from the dais and wrapped around Arik in vast spiraling currents. Ether streamed over his arms, crossed his chest, and moved through every embroidered line of his ceremonial coat until the garments themselves seemed woven out of light. The pressure rolled across the Golden Court like the onset of a storm, immense and controlled and absolute.
Liam felt it through the bond and through the responding gold in his own channels.
The ether recognized him, welcomed him, and circled him with affection.
Yet every current still turned back toward Arik, drawn to its sovereign with irresistible certainty.
Above the throne, the crown formed.
Fragments of gold condensed in the air, joining piece by piece until an ancient imperial crown emerged in full. Its lines were severe and elegant, the metal shaped with the same uncompromising beauty as the rest of Nuria. It lowered slowly through the rotating formations.
Arik bowed his head just enough to receive it.
The moment the crown settled against his hair, the whole court trembled.
A deep sound moved through the palace and out across the city, resonant enough to shake the stone beneath Liam’s feet. The gathered nobles, officials, and provincial delegations dropped to one knee as one body.
Liam remained standing beside the throne.
Gold held him upright, coiling lightly around his wrist and waist with the unmistakable authority of an empire that knew exactly where its future consort belonged.
Cassian stepped back.
Arik turned.
He looked every bit what he had become: emperor, sovereign, and the living center of the power moving through Nuria.
Voices rose from the galleries.
"Arik Oberon Lyon."
The name rolled across the Golden Court.
"Sovereign of Nuria."
Again, louder.
"Emperor of Nuria."
The declaration struck Deira like a bell.
Liam’s heart pounded against his ribs. He had expected grandeur. He had expected ceremony. He had expected something old and overwhelming and beautiful.
This surpassed all of it.
Arik’s gaze shifted beyond the court.
Toward the horizon.
Toward the Gate.
Liam knew the exact instant he remembered his promise.
The ether changed with him.
Arik stepped away from the throne and crossed the final distance to Liam. He extended his hand without taking his eyes from the far reaches of the empire.
Liam placed his hand in his.
Warm fingers closed around his, steady and certain.
Then Arik raised his free hand and called the sovereign ether.
Gold erupted from the palace in an enormous wave and spread across Nuria. Deira blazed brighter than the sunlit sky. The light coursed through the suspended districts, across the floating lands beyond the capital, through mountains, ancient cities, river systems, and hidden ceremonial sites untouched for centuries. Every island, every piece of land, every dormant formation recognized the command.
Liam felt the architecture beneath it.
The old pathways.
The deep intelligence in the design.
Something in him—Enki, perhaps, or whatever memory remained in the bones of the soul—understood the structure even without recalling the past. His own ether rose instinctively and moved alongside Arik’s, completing the pattern where the older systems welcomed him.
The Gate answered.
On the far edge of the empire, towering structures awakened in full. Stone and light rose together. The ancient frame of the Gate lifted higher and higher, its entire shape overtaken by molten gold. Ether poured upward through its foundations and outward across the empire’s borders in a radiant field that expanded over Nuria like a second dawn.
For one suspended moment, the whole of the hidden empire stood inside a golden veil.
Then the veil dissolved.
In the outside world, the ocean changed first.
Ships far from any known coast saw the horizon ignite. Satellite systems caught the sudden expansion of gold over dark water. Vast tracts of sea rippled beneath a light that had not existed a breath earlier.
Then Nuria rose into view.
Great lands emerged from the shrouded expanse, followed by suspended islands hanging high above the ocean. Mountain ranges appeared where maps had shown only open water. Forests and stone terraces took shape within the fading brilliance. Waterfalls spilled from elevated landmasses into the dark sea below. District after district revealed itself, until an entire hidden empire stood where the world had believed there was nothing.
Deira appeared at the center of it all.
Its floating islands shone like a crown over the ocean. Bridges spanned open sky. Towers of pale stone and gold rose above the newly visible lands. At the highest point of the capital, the imperial palace emerged in full, vast and radiant above the awakening empire.
The world watched Nuria return.
