Vol. 1 - Ch. 49 - The Slacker Assassin
New Novel - Read Here
Lynn stared in shock at the adorable sleeping face breathing evenly before him.
It was none other than Liko, the snake girl who had gone completely limp and fallen asleep the moment her Battle Aura was sealed.
Wait! When had she pressed herself up against him?
No, wait, when had she slipped free of the ropes and left the attic?!
"Help……"
Lynn attempted to call for help, since Iyanna was sleeping right under the bed.
Come to think of it, this girl had completely failed at her duty!
He was going to dock her pay! Not that he had ever paid her to begin with.
But at this moment, his ribcage was being pinned down firmly by the other party's ice-cold yet springy upper body, making it utterly impossible to produce even a single sound.
The part of his body from the chest downward was furthermore tightly coiled by a serpent's tail that felt like a block of ice, leaving him completely unable to move.
Was he really going to be slowly crushed to death like this?
Lynn had imagined many ways he might meet his end, but being slept to death by a lazy snake was absolutely not among them.
However, there was still a chance things could turn around.
Lynn tentatively moved his right hand.
Good, it could move within a small range.
And the tip of the tail happened to be right beside him.
Based on his own practical experience, no demi-human could resist this move.
Lynn extended his villainous right hand and grabbed hard at the tip of the tail.
The soft and ice-cold body coiled tightly around him suddenly shuddered.
And then it rolled over and went right back to sleep.
This left Lynn in an even worse situation.
Because he was coiled up tightly, when she rolled over she directly twisted him around in a horrifying manner.
Aaagh, his back!
But even though tears streamed down from the pain, he could not make a sound.
This had truly become the most mysteriously absurd way to die.
Just as Lynn felt that all was lost, he noticed something.
After rolling over, as though finding this new position more comfortable, Liko began rhythmically flickering her tongue in and out.
Each time that soft pink, forked tongue tip darted out past her pale lips, it felt as though it were mocking Lynn's helplessness in that moment.
In this desperate, suffocating situation, Lynn's earth-shattering brilliance once again kicked into furious motion.
Although at this moment his limbs were unable to move, he still had a far more powerful weapon that could move freely.
And that was his brilliant mind, and his silver tongue capable of arguing that black was white.
And at this moment, they would become his final salvation!
In an instant, a flash of resolve crossed Lynn's eyes.
He then suddenly lifted his head and opened his mouth.
And bit down hard on Liko's tongue tip as it darted out.
"…"
For some reason, Lynn suddenly felt the atmosphere around him shift abruptly.
But since the other party's body was still in its original state, he still did not let go.
And so, a full ten-odd seconds passed before Liko slowly opened her mouth wide:
"Ah……that hurts……"
She then sluggishly released Lynn's body and crawled to the edge of the bed with a dejected look on her face.
Lynn, finally able to breathe freely again, gasped for air like a survivor of a catastrophe, then grabbed the pillow and hurled it hard at Iyanna, who was sleeping on top of his tail with a blissful look on her face and grinding her teeth.
"Mmph!"
The startled wolf girl leapt up on the spot, landing on all fours with her fur all bristled up.
"To the rescue! To the rescue!"
Lynn scrambled and rolled his way to the head of the bed, pointed at the snake girl sprawled at the foot of the bed, and issued Iyanna an order:
"Bite her!"
Although she had absolutely no idea what had happened and her mind was still in a state of chaos, Iyanna instinctively charged forward.
And was then sent flying by a tail swipe from the snake girl, who had propped herself up.
"Oww!"
The aggrieved Iyanna ran out the door with a weeping puppy-dog face.
"I……am angry……"
On the other side, the dark green snake pupils beneath the heavy dark circles suddenly contracted.
But strangely, Lynn felt no hostility.
Not even a pop-up notification of a favorability change appeared.
"Wait, are you actually angry?"
He asked somewhat puzzledly.
"Found out……can't be bothered to be angry anyway……"
Liko flopped back down, her eyelids closing slowly as though they weighed a thousand pounds.
"No, but how exactly did you slip free of the ropes? Weren't you tied up properly?"
"Are you……an idiot……can ropes tie down a snake……"
"Fair point, that's very logical."
Just as the two of them had entered a mode of otherworldly conversation, a forceful sharp cry rang out:
"Don't you dare let her kill that bastard! He hasn't formally returned my father's territory to me yet!"
Accompanied by the aura of fire magic, Elysia charged in holding a vigorously blazing candle, with Iyanna hiding behind her.
"Ah! My candle! Stop right there, Employee Number One!"
"Is NOW the time to worry about THAT?!"
"Of course it is! This was made from refined beeswax— one candle costs a copper coin!"
Lynn didn't even bother to straighten out his nightclothes, which had been crumpled all over by the serpent's tail, and with astonishing hand speed reached out and blew out the flame in Elysia's hand in one breath.
Elysia stood there holding the extinguished candlestick, the corners of her mouth twitching uncontrollably.
"Besides, does this one look like she's about to make a move?"
Lynn pointed at the bed.
In the brief interlude just now, Liko had already coiled herself back up into a lump, and had even found a comfortable hollow in Lynn's pillow, burying her head into it.
"But…she's an assassin from the Blood Snake Society! And she tried to kill Griffin!"
Elysia still kept her eyes fixed warily on that black lump of a creature, magic power stirring quietly in her hand:
"If we don't drive her out or deal with her while we have the chance, she'll be a hidden danger, isn't that what you've always said?”
"Too much trouble……"
Before Elysia had even finished speaking, a muffled voice came from within the pillow.
Then, a disheveled head slowly pulled itself out.
With a slightly thick-tongued lisp from the tongue tip that had been bitten just moments ago and was still faintly aching, it said:
"Killing that Griffin person……is too much trouble……
You have so many people here……fighting means moving……even more trouble……"
Liko half-squinted her eyes:
"And besides……if I go back empty-handed……that old thing will definitely……
Ah……just thinking about it is exhausting……"
As though she had pictured that hellish scenario, Liko's body went limp even more thoroughly and rapidly:
"So……I'm not going back…… Anyway Griffin is here too……the mission target hasn't gone anywhere……
I'll just lie here……and wait until that old thing forgets about all this……or until Griffin dies on his own……
Oh right……your bed is very comfortable……you're very comfortable too……"
Lynn touched his nose in a somewhat dazed manner.
This was the first time he had ever encountered a person of this type.
But if he couldn't keep Liko tied up, could he still bring her along to see the Viscount?
"……I'm saying hypothetically— hypothetically, if I laid out a bed for you in the carriage, would you be willing to come out with me?"
"What a hassle……but I guess you can just move me in after I fall asleep……"
And just like that, after a series of twists and turns, Lynn successfully set off for White Pine City together with Griffin the following day.
"It's so bumpy……can't sleep……"
"It's fine, once we get there I'll let you sleep for a whole day — I absolutely won't bother you."
"Alright……"
Looking at the languid Liko, Griffin felt somewhat helpless.
An assassin this much of a slacker— there was only her.
However, if they were heading to White Pine City next, then it was likely they might run into that person there.
Thinking of this, Griffin's expression turned serious:
"Lord Lynn, at the Viscount's estate, you must be on your guard against one person."
