Vol. 1 - Ch. 42 - Elysia! Receive the Guest!
"I will not tell you anything."
After sleeping soundly for a long time, Griffin's complexion looked much better.
His sanity, which had been temporarily lost due to sleep deprivation previously, now stood upon the high ground once more.
Although for some unknown reason, he could no longer recall what he had experienced over the past period of time, he was certain that it was impossible for him to leak any intelligence...
"Griffin, confessing truthfully is the only way to strive for leniency.
You have committed the felony of murdering a candle, do you understand!"
Looking at the grief-stricken Lynn, the corner of Griffin's eye twitched.
This Baron of Blackstone was as unreliable as always.
However, his combat power was only five, which was not worth paying attention to.
The one truly worth worrying about was the fellow outside the attic...
After a simple moment of thought, he restored his customary calmness:
"I do not know why you know my name, but what you can know ends here."
After saying this, he closed his mouth toughly.
However, faced with this scene, Lynn's performance completely went beyond his expectations.
He was neither annoyed, nor did he continue to maintain his grief and indignation over the passing of the candle.
Lynn merely stared at Griffin with a peculiar look.
To be precise, it was the look one gives an idiot.
"You obey Baron Rose and are his retainer, and he is precisely the mastermind behind this series of conspiracies.
Aside from poisoning the Viscount's son, you and another female subordinate were also poisoned by him with snake venom.
The Blood Snake Society behind him planned the illegal slave trade of demi-humans, and Dawson was silenced because of this."
Some of this information had been disclosed by Griffin previously when his mind was muddled, while some of it was deduced by Lynn himself.
But regardless of the source of this information, from Griffin's shaking pupils, he had already confirmed most of its truthfulness.
"Hmph hmph, do not underestimate my intelligence network. Do still remember what I said?
Confessing truthfully is the only way to strive for leniency.
If I myself did not know the actual situation, how could I believe your confession?"
Lynn laughed haughtily.
Faced with Lynn, who looked as if he already held victory firmly in his hands, Griffin's lips parted slightly:
"Pfft..."
In the end, he could no longer suppress his hoarse chuckling:
"Pfft-hahaha..."
As if he had heard an enormous joke, he wantonly let out mocking laughter:
"Regrettably, Lord Baron of Blackstone, you do indeed know some insignificant pieces of information, and clearly, they came from me.
If it was just a matter of speaking them, perhaps I would be quite troubled, since it is difficult for me to confirm how much intelligence I leaked previously in my unconscious state.
However, you mixed naive guesses in among them, which makes me very certain of one thing."
He revealed a provocative smile:
"You have absolutely no idea what you are facing, Lord Lynn."
Alright, as expected, it was not so simple to fish out information.
Lynn did not take much of a blow, merely spreading his hands noncommittally.
On one hand, this was because his skin had already thickened to a certain level.
On the other hand, it was because... the opponent's reaction was precisely the intelligence he had been trying to probe just now.
The corners of his mouth slowly curled up:
"Mr. Griffin, I do not know what motive drove you to obey the Blood Snake Society, but I can tell you my motive for doing things."
Lynn pulled up a chair and sat closer to him:
"And that is efficiency. I pursue maximum efficiency, which is why my purpose in coming here from the beginning was not interrogation."
He rubbed his right index finger and thumb together, revealing an amiable smile:
"But rather to seek a transaction of maximized profit."
Griffin's smile gradually receded.
For some reason, at this moment, he suddenly felt as if he could not see through this man whose every gesture and action was filled with unreliability.
"The reason intelligence is precious is because it is essentially a time-sensitive commodity; someone thirsts for it, and thus someone supplies it.
And I came this time prepared with a fixed expected offer, and therefore I thirst for an equivalent expected commodity.
Now I understand that you still know many secrets, which means the value of the commodity I can obtain can reach my expectations."
Griffin raised his eyebrows:
"Are you sober? Do you mean to say you think I will make this transaction with you?"
"No, no, no, how is that possible?"
Lynn wagged the index finger of his right hand, and then smiled even more brilliantly:
"You must carry it out, because you cannot refuse."
Before Griffin could refute, Lynn suddenly raised a question:
"Mr. Griffin, do you still remember what you previously said the mission you came to my territory to execute was?"
He twitched his mouth. Of course he remembered. It was to capture Lynn alive and then bring him before Baron Rose as soon as possible.
Hmm, wait?
As if catching Griffin's slight facial expression change, Lynn continued to ask further:
"Then, do you know how much time has passed since you set off to come here?"
Thump—
In an instant, Griffin felt his heart throb.
Counting the departure, the lurking after arrival, and the subsequent imprisonment...
"If you set off from White Pine City simultaneously with us, then the answer is fourteen days, exactly two weeks.
The journey from White Pine City to Blackstone Fief is normally around two and a half days, and the distance from Blackstone Fief to the Rose Territory is about two days.
Adding the preparation time and the lurking time, if I were the one issuing the mission, the estimated time limit should have been seven days to complete."
Lynn narrowed his eyes:
"So then, if more than ten days have passed and there isn't even any news, the result must be failure, right...
But, will it really only be a simple failure? Although I am not certain of others' thoughts, in my view, in everything, one should think from the worst angle.
If that person also thinks this way, then what is the worst-case scenario he has conceived? What are the countermeasures and backup plans he has prepared for it?"
Speaking up to here, Lynn spread his hands:
"The answer is that I do not know, since after all, I do not understand intelligence at all...
But I believe you know, right? Mr. Griffin.
After all, your face doesn't look very good."
Griffin stared fixedly at Lynn, who wore a wicked smile.
In his line of sight, this smile gradually overlapped with another figure.
If it was him, then he would absolutely feel that he had been betrayed.
Because he never believed anyone.
And if he truly believed he had betrayed him, then...
He did not dare to continue thinking about it.
"Therefore, this involves the offer I have prepared, Mr. Griffin."
Looking at his opponent, whose face was growing increasingly pale, Lynn's smile became more and more pleased.
Any transaction is always best concluded only when one party is in their most distressed state and has lost their bearings.
Thus, he fished out a piece of parchment from his tunic.
"Sign a contract with me and become my employee. I promise I will do my utmost to assist you in breaking free of them; breaking free in the absolute sense.
After all, they are the great enemies of my financial backer, and can absolutely be confirmed as obstacles on my business path, so I will have to deal with them sooner or later.
As your deposit, you need to tell me all the intelligence you know about them.
Of course, to show my sincerity, I also have a pre-paid wage."
After saying this, he snapped his fingers toward the outside of the attic:
"Elysia! Get ready, we're receiving a guest!"
