Chapter 67: Meeting Seth’s Dad

"Hm? Who’s there?" A guard narrowed his gaze as he held a hand over the gun hidden in his suit. He stepped forward slowly, vigilant.

But alas, he still didn’t see it coming...

Suddenly, a figure sped past him. Before he could react, a palm chopped gently down on his neck.

And he collapsed.

"Guys, hurry, we don’t have much time," Jack whispered as the others came into view and continued their stealthy movement.

They were at a three-story manor. Though not as lavish as the Duskreaver family mansion, it was still beautiful and luxurious.

This was the residence of Seth’s father. Maya had led the four here, and they were trying to sneak in as quietly as possible.

After all, even if Seth’s father could be on their side, there was no telling what might happen if others saw them.

They might report to the higher-ups, and then they’d be finished.

Finally, they reached the garden at the back of the manor.

Just beneath an old oak tree, Maya’s eyes flashed as she spotted a familiar trap door.

This was the path she and Seth had used to sneak out of the house when they were kids.

It was a secret passage that led straight to the storage room of the house.

They quietly opened it, slipped inside, and lowered it silently until they all vanished. No one caught sight of them.

And slowly, all around the building, unconscious guards began to stir.

"Ah, what happened?" a female guard pondered silently.

"You were sleeping on the job, that’s what!" a male colleague joked.

But they glanced at each other and remained silent. Regardless of what happened, they couldn’t report this.

Without any evidence that someone had put them to sleep, their actions could easily be interpreted as negligence.

And that would result in them getting sacked — a chance they couldn’t take.

So everyone, unknown to each other, came to the same conclusion and silently went back to their patrols.

...

"This is the staff’s cloakroom. We should be able to get uniforms to disguise ourselves," Maya proposed.

Brandon gave her a thumbs up, rushing into the room to grab something to wear.

After they all fully changed, they stood in a circle as Maya drew out separate paths for them.

"All these lead to Big Uncle’s room. We can’t be seen walking together — it will cause suspicion." She pointed out on a makeshift map she had drawn.

"So here’s the path each person has to take. And remember: do not make eye contact with anyone. Act natural and ignore any form of conversation with other staff." Maya warned.

One by one, they left the room, each taking a separate route.

The agreement was to rendezvous at Seth’s father’s room. Once they met him, they’d know what to do from there.

Maya’s path was the shortest but had the most scrutiny.

She was going to take the elevator to the top floor.

But the problem was that the elevator was the perfect place for small talk among staff.

So going in there, there was a healthy chance she’d be spoken to.

Her face remained expressionless as she pressed the request button repeatedly.

Within seconds, a chime rang out, and the elevator doors parted open.

Relief flooded her heart.

’It’s empty!’

She rushed in — but things didn’t stay simple.

Three others walked in just as the elevator was about to depart.

"Did you guys hear? They said Master has regained consciousness," a lady in a black-and-white maid’s outfit whispered.

Another, wearing a black apron, replied, "That’s old news. He woke up hours ago."

The last man looked at the two in confusion. "But if Master is awake, why hasn’t he made any moves? After all, Young Master Seth should still be in detainment. I doubt Master will stand it."

Maya, trying to remain silent and unnoticeable, shook.

Her eyes filled with worry. Seth had been detained? How? When?

And what happened to Big Uncle that left him unconscious? Why did he let them take Seth?

The maid chuckled. "Tsk tsk, you haven’t heard? Hehe, I heard from my boyfriend in the combat division — it seems Young Master Seth has escaped."

The two gasped in shock, eyes wide. "Escaped?"

The lady smiled confidently and continued, "Hehe, the family has searched everywhere — house to house, alley to alley — but still couldn’t find him."

Maya’s expression grew complicated. This was still the Duskreaver safe zone.

How could Seth be on the run for long? While this news brought momentary relief, it was too early to be happy.

Maya squinted.

’This changes everything. First, we have to find Seth before the family does.’

Fortunately, the three gossipers barely paid her any mind until they reached their destination and departed.

Maya walked confidently through the hall, straight toward her Big Uncle’s room.

Very soon, she was standing before the door. Her hand rose, just above the knob, when...

"Hey, you!" A voice called from behind, making her stiffen.

She turned around, her face expressionless, forcing her heart to calm.

A female maid rushed up to her. "Since you’re going into Master’s room, could you serve this to him for me? The Madam is calling for me."

The staff passed the stacked tray into Maya’s hands before rushing off.

Maya let out a sigh of relief. At least she wasn’t caught.

With the tray in hand, she stepped before the door once more. This time, with zero hesitation, she opened it and stepped in.

"Drop whatever you brought on the table and leave." A stern, cold voice rang out.

Seth’s father stood before a mirror, changing his bandages.

Maya’s pupils constricted as her gaze rested on the pile of bloodied bandages at the side — and her Big Uncle’s heavily injured body.

Unknowingly, the tray she held slipped from her hands, glass plates and cups shattering.

Simon frowned and

turned around. His eyes flashed with recognition. "Hm? Maya? What are you doing here?"

With one glance, he recognized her.
