Chapter 287: Heading to the Rift, Rule the World or Return to Reality?
A ruler?
No way!
Yun Zhenyue recalled her time as the City Lord of Fengdu Ghost City. It had been nothing but trouble—fending off invasions while also having to micromanage aid for the poor. There wasn't a single day she could relax.
'I have no such grand ambitions in this life!'
'I'd much rather just coast through life, spending my days peacefully with Gu Yuan.'
"A ruler? No thanks..."
Yun Zhenyue shook her head like a rattle drum.
Seeing this, Konglan chuckled. "What's wrong? Is the prospect of ruling a world not to your liking?"
"To be so resistant... could it be—"
A teasing smile played on Konglan's lips.
'Did she see right through me?'
But instead, Konglan said, "Don't tell me you'd rather serve at the Ghost Lord's side?"
"That's my dream, but seeing how devoted you are, I imagine you feel the same."
"Well, I'm not a petty person. If I have the honor of meeting the Ghost Lord, I'll ask him to let you serve him, too."
Yun Zhenyue was speechless.
'There's no need to ask for that.'
'Is this what you'd expect from Gu Yuan's number one fan?'
'She'd give up an entire world?'
'Is this whole invasion of the real world just to get Gu Yuan to notice her?'
Yun Zhenyue realized she seemed to have stumbled upon another truth.
This brief banter gave Yun Zhenyue enough time to come up with an excuse.
"Lan, have you personally been to that rift?" Yun Zhenyue asked.
"Not yet..."
Konglan shook her head, her honesty apparent.
She had only discovered that rift less than a week ago.
Plenty of other ghosts had tried to slip through.
But she had her subordinates stop them and drive them all away, lest they rush in and tip off whatever was on the other side.
After all, this was an entire world, not like the small-scale instances they'd dealt with before. Even for an organization the size of the Purgatory Factory, a full-scale conquest would be difficult.
"In that case, Lan, you'd best not let your guard down."
Yun Zhenyue's voice dropped low, intentionally making things sound mysterious.
"From what I know, there are Guardians between the real world and the Ghost World. I don't know who ordered those ghosts to stand guard there, but their purpose is to stop beings from the Ghost World."
"Otherwise, think about it..."
"If ghosts could get in so easily, the real world would have been in chaos long ago. But when I was in the real world before, I never heard of any ghosts existing."
Hearing this, Konglan looked thoughtful.
'Indeed!'
'That makes sense.'
She had never heard of any ghost that could easily travel to another world, either.
But the temptation of conquering an entire world was too great!
Konglan couldn't help but be moved by the thought of earning the Ghost Lord's admiration.
Even if the price was sacrificing the entire Purgatory Factory!
"You have a point. How about this..."
Konglan, completely trusting Yun Zhenyue, immediately proposed a plan.
"I'll go with you. We'll have someone test the waters first. If there's no danger, then we can make further arrangements."
'Test the waters?'
'I have no idea what scale this "test" would be.'
'But seeing how determined Konglan was, it seemed I'd have to go along with her plan!'
Yun Zhenyue felt very uneasy about the rift.
After all, even without the Purgatory Factory, ghosts from other instances could also pass through that crack.
For example, the Purgatory Factory's sworn enemy, the Living Body Company.
If they were the first to enter the real world, everyone would probably become walking corpses.
Besides,
with Gu Yuan's strange influence at play, who knew if her lie might just become the truth.
If it didn't come true, Yun Zhenyue was prepared to summon her paper doll adopted daughter.
'She would just have her pretend to be a "Guardian" and repel the ghosts sent to probe.'
Her paper doll adopted daughter was now a low-level Great Evil.
Dealing with some small fries wouldn't be a problem.
...
"Master, you seem to be in a bad mood."
On the way to the rift, Little Nine bounced along, oblivious to the tense atmosphere.
Little Eight said flatly, "You idiot, don't bother Master."
"We're invading a whole world this time. As the leader, Master is definitely planning what to do after we occupy it."
"If you don't behave, Master will send you to Antarctica. I hear it's very cold there."
Little Nine grumbled, "I don't want to go somewhere so far away. I want to stay with Master."
"But there are penguins there," Little Eight added.
"Penguins?"
Little Nine fell into deep thought.
'Maybe that wouldn't be so bad...'
Since the purpose of this trip was merely to scout ahead, Konglan had only arranged for a dozen or so Evil Star-level employees to accompany them.
The group didn't walk too far before arriving at a desolate mountain.
"This is it."
Konglan said, turning back to Yun Zhenyue.
They were currently located halfway up the mountain.
The twilight was the color of blood. A dense nether energy stained the desolate mountain a deep crimson. A red mist diffused through the air, and through it, crumbling tombstones could be glimpsed among the trees. When the wind swept through, the mountain seemed to let out a whimpering shriek, as if countless ghosts were whispering in the gloom.
Yun Zhenyue's expression was grave.
She saw a blood-red rift hanging bizarrely in midair.
Two factory employees were guarding the place.
A terrifying aura emanated from them.
'They must be two Great Evils.'
"President..."
A ghost holding a bloody scimitar said respectfully, its voice low.
Konglan nodded. "Have any other ghosts come here in the past few days?"
"Only one," the scimitar-wielding ghost said coldly. "But he likely wasn't from the Living Body Company. I killed him and checked; I found no company insignia on him."
"Mm."
Konglan beckoned, and Yun Zhenyue walked over.
"This is the Purgatory Factory's Holy Maiden. She will be leading the employees today. You are to follow her commands."
"Yes!"
The two Great Evil employees bowed solemnly.
Yun Zhenyue paid them no mind.
Her attention was completely captivated by the rift.
This blood-red rift reminded Yun Zhenyue of the Dream-Weaving Ghost in the Fierce Ghost Mall's parking lot.
Back then, the Dream-Weaving Ghost had also created a spatial rift.
But this rift in front of her...
It exuded a twisted, malicious, and bizarre aura.
It was on a completely different level from the rift created by the Dream-Weaving Ghost.
Yun Zhenyue's gaze was fixed.
This rift seemed as if it could suck her very consciousness into it.
It made one unable to resist the urge to jump in and find out what was inside.
She took out her phone and turned on the flashlight.
Yun Zhenyue didn't get too close, lest she be sucked in.
But as soon as the phone's light got near the rift, it vanished instantly, the weak beam absorbed completely.
"I've checked it before. No matter what it is, as long as it touches this rift, it gets sucked in."
Konglan remarked.
"Even if you tie a rope to it, once the object goes in, you can't pull it back out."
"So it's a one-way trip?" Yun Zhenyue asked, trying to drive home how dangerous the rift was.
"It probably isn't a huge problem."
Konglan shook her head.
"I have a feeling that with my power, I could force my way out of this rift."
"It's just that I haven't sent any ghosts in to check it out yet."
'So...'
'We still have to go in?'
Yun Zhenyue took a deep breath.
'I can only hope that there really are Guardians on the other side of this rift.'
