Chapter 90: The American Detective Hired by Zhou Yan and Her Partner
Shen Xing said at this moment, "Oh, this matter? Your brother and uncle's disappearance—Auntie and I have already reported it to the police. The cases have been merged now, and they'll notify us if there's any news. I believe Auntie has already told you."
Zhou Yan replied indifferently, "I've heard everything from my mom."
"By the way, Shen Xing, what's that in your hand?"
Shen Xing was genuinely annoyed by the girl before her.
At the very least, she was already engaged to Zhou Yan's brother and would be her future sister-in-law. Even if she didn't call her "sister-in-law," calling her "sister" wouldn't be too much to ask, right?
Yet here she was, addressing her directly by name.
"Oh, it's my pregnancy report. I just found out I'm pregnant."
Hearing this, Zhou Yan crossed her arms and sneered, "Oh? Pregnant? Is it my brother's?"
Shen Xing grew angry at this. "If it's not your brother's, whose could it be?"
If she had really been impregnated by someone else, she might have faltered under such questioning. But unfortunately for Zhou Yan, this was indeed Zhou Wu's child. Zhou Yan continued to sneer. "It's just too coincidental that you suddenly turn up pregnant at such a critical juncture."
Shen Xing was truly furious now. "Are you suggesting your brother's disappearance has something to do with me? That I caused it?"
Zhou Yan shrugged. "Who knows?"
"Alright, alright, stop arguing."
At this point, Zhou Wu's mother rose from the sofa, putting an end to the squabble.
She addressed both Shen Xing and Zhou Yan:
"Xiao Xing, don't mind Zhou Yan. She's always been like this since childhood. Please bear with her."
"And Xiao Yan, she'll be your sister-in-law in the future. Show her some respect."
Shen Xing appeared obedient. "I understand, Auntie."
But Zhou Yan merely snorted and fell silent.
"Since everyone's here, let's have lunch together at home. Consider it a rare reunion meal, even though your father and brother aren't here and are missing..."
"I'll go buy groceries."
Zhou Wu's mother stood up with a sigh.
"Auntie, shall I go with you?"
Shen Xing transformed into the perfect attentive daughter-in-law.
But Zhou Wu's mother waved her off. "No need, I'll go alone. I want some time to myself."
Thus, when Zhou Wu's mother left to buy groceries, only Shen Xing, Zhou Yan, and Li Miguo remained in the spacious apartment.
Standing before the floor-to-ceiling windows that offered a clear view outside, Zhou Yan looked down at the scene below.
In a tone that brooked no refusal, she said to Shen Xing, "Shen Xing, although I've heard from my mom about my dad and brother's disappearance and how it all happened, I need to hear it from you too, since you were involved."
"If you want to find my brother quickly and marry him, be as detailed as possible."
"Of course, if this is all part of your scheme and you don't want my brother found—if you're just after our family's money—rest assured, even if you're carrying his child, you won't get a single cent."
Her calm words carried a tsunami of threat.
Truth be told, Shen Xing genuinely disliked Zhou Yan. But one thing Zhou Yan said was correct—she also wanted to find Zhou Wu as soon as possible.
So despite her dislike for Zhou Yan, she recounted everything she knew.
After Shen Xing finished explaining the whole story, Zhou Yan turned to Li Miguo beside her.
"What do you think?"
Li Miguo smiled confidently. "Something's fishy. Extremely fishy. It feels like their disappearance is straight out of a ghost story."
Zhou Yan also smiled. "That's what I think too. So how do we find my dad and brother?"
Li Miguo replied, "I'll need to call my friend Jimmy over to brainstorm. And have him bring an American detective along."
Zhou Yan asked, "Are American detectives reliable?"
Li Miguo spread his hands helplessly. "You know I'm an overseas Chinese who grew up in America. I'm not familiar with detectives here in China. If you prefer, you could find one locally."
Zhou Yan shook her head. "Forget it. I don't have any connections with local detectives either."
Throughout their discussion about finding a detective, Shen Xing listened quietly nearby.
The two spoke without any attempt to hide their conversation from her.
She wondered—was this trust? Or did they simply consider her insignificant, as if she didn't exist?
Three days later.
Shen Xing drove Zhou Wu's Mercedes, with Zhou Yan in the passenger seat.
In the back sat three men.
Given their large builds, the three men were quite cramped in the back seat.
The first man was Li Miguo, the overseas Chinese who had grown up in America.
The second was a white man in his early twenties—Jimmy, the friend Li Miguo had mentioned.
The last man, in his thirties with typically white features like Jimmy, was the detective Li Miguo had asked Jimmy to find.
The detective kept his eyes closed throughout the ride, as if meditating.
The Mercedes soon arrived at Alice Apartment.
After smoothly passing through the gate barrier, it drove in and parked beside the black Maybach that Zhou Wu had driven, which belonged to his father.
The five of them got out of the car.
"This apartment isn't bad. My useless brother might have been a failure since childhood, but at least his taste is still intact."
After getting out of the passenger seat, Zhou Yan assessed the apartment building and its surroundings before offering her evaluation.
Li Miguo nodded in agreement. "This is my first time in China. I've only heard about it from my parents or read things online. They said China was quite backward, but seeing is believing—it's not quite what they described! Take this apartment, for example. It's beautiful! There's a kind of minimalist elegance to it!"
Zhou Yan said, "How long has it been since your parents came back? Their ideas are stuck in the past. The country has developed rapidly in recent years."
Naturally, their visit to Alice Apartment wasn't to tour Zhou Wu and Shen Xing's future marital home.
They were there to investigate the disappearances of Zhou Wu and his father.
After Jimmy and the American detective he'd brought arrived, Zhou Yan and Li Miguo had explained the whole story of the two disappearances.
Upon hearing this, the American detective said he wanted to check the apartment's surveillance footage from the day of the disappearance.
Thus, under Shen Xing's guidance, the group came to Alice Apartment.
They easily found the apartment manager, Xiao Zhang, on the first floor and requested to check the surveillance footage.
Xiao Zhang readily agreed without any objections.
Soon, in the surveillance room, the group began reviewing footage from when Zhou Wu's father disappeared.
Zhou Wu's father—the middle-aged man who was Li Mengmeng's sugar daddy.
The actual surveillance footage should have shown him receiving a call from his wife, leaving Li Mengmeng's apartment, taking the elevator to the first floor, and then being struck dead by an unknown psychopath dressed as a chainsaw murderer.
But what Zhou Yan and the others saw in the surveillance footage was completely different.
