Chapter 35 - 34: Taking a Liking
Chen Ying had been avoiding Ye Fan at all costs, terrified of offending him. Now, the very scene he dreaded most had unexpectedly unfolded.
In front of so many people, even as the overlord of Jiangning, he had to kneel. If he didn’t, he would soon be a dead man.
"Apologize!" Ye Fan barked.
"I’m sorry!" Chen Ying apologized to Luo Ling.
Luo Ling had never imagined that Chen Ying, the infamous boss of the Feiying Society, would ever apologize to her. Frightened, she clung to Ye Fan’s arm, silently pleading with him to let the matter go.
Ye Fan said, "We’ll let tonight’s incident slide. She’s my sister. If anyone from your gang bullies her in the future, I’ll come directly to you to settle the score!"
"Yes, yes! Rest assured, sir. No one in Jiangning City will dare to bully her again. Anyone who does will be making an enemy of me!" Chen Ying immediately swore.
Only then did Ye Fan lead Luo Ling away.
After they left, the patrons finally snapped out of their stupor. They didn’t know how powerful Ye Fan’s background was, but for him to make Chen Ying kneel in such disgrace, he had to be a terrifying existence. They just had no idea who he was. Their realization was quickly followed by fear, for they had witnessed Chen Ying’s moment of utter humiliation.
Chen Ying stood up and declared, "Everyone, if any of you speak a word of what happened tonight, I, Chen Ying, will teach you the meaning of regret."
"We won’t, we won’t!" the crowd hastily promised.
"Scram!"
At Chen Ying’s furious roar, the patrons scrambled over each other to get out.
Only the bar owner and the men Ye Fan had knocked down moments ago remained. Chen Ying turned to the shivering owner and said, "If that young lady shows up for work tomorrow, you will give this bar to her! Understand?"
"I-I understand," the bar owner stammered, his voice laced with despair.
Then, Chen Ying glanced at the four men wailing on the ground. "Don’t blame me," he said. "Blame yourselves for offending someone you couldn’t afford to and for making me lose face." He paused, then commanded, "Men, drag them out and feed them to the fish in the river."
"Yes!" A group of thugs came forward and hoisted the four men up.
"Brother Ying, spare us!"
"We’ll never do it again!"
The men screamed in despair, but their fate had been sealed the moment they decided to cross Ye Fan, and by extension, Luo Ling. On any other day, they were the ones who bullied the weak; today, they had become the weak. This was karmic retribution. What goes around comes around, and their time had finally come.
Meanwhile, Ye Fan and Luo Ling were outside. Luo Ling struggled to support his staggering body. As he looked at her face, Ye Fan reached out and involuntarily caressed her cheek. Luo Ling didn’t resist. It seemed that, in her heart, she had come to accept him.
Perhaps it was the alcohol, or perhaps it was a flood of memories, but at that moment, Ye Fan suddenly collapsed, startling Luo Ling. There was no doubt about it; he was dead drunk. She struggled with his heavy body, and not knowing where he lived, she could only half-drag him to a nearby hotel.
When the hotel owner saw Luo Ling and Ye Fan, he suspected an illicit transaction. He’d heard that many female university students moonlighted by frequenting nightclubs and offering illegal services; for the right price, they could be taken to a room. In his eyes, the young Luo Ling was clearly one of those girls. After checking them in, he called the police.
Once inside, Luo Ling gently placed Ye Fan on the bed, then sat on the edge, panting. There was only one bed, which made things difficult. Besides, she was completely out of money.
Just as she stood up to wash her face, she slipped and fell right into Ye Fan’s arms, their bodies pressing together intimately. Her lips landed squarely on his.
Flustered, she scrambled up, her face flushing crimson. The accident had been far too sudden for her to process.
At that moment, Ye Fan struggled to sit up, shaking his foggy head. He had drunk way too much tonight.
When Luo Ling came out of the bathroom and saw he was awake, she panicked. Afraid of being misunderstood, she quickly explained, "I don’t mean anything by this! You were drunk and I couldn’t find your home, so I brought you here!"
Ye Fan smiled at the adorably naive girl. "You’re so young," he asked. "Why do you work in a nightclub?"
"I need money for school," Luo Ling said, her voice trembling. "My family can’t afford it, so I have to work every day after my classes to pay for tuition and living expenses. Now I’m going to lose my job again." As she spoke, she was on the verge of tears.
Ye Fan hadn’t realized her situation was so pitiable. He said, "Here’s two million. That should be enough to get you through graduation."
Luo Ling was shocked that he would be so kind. She quickly shook her head. "Thank you, but I don’t like to take money from people for nothing." She refused, assuming he wanted to keep her as a mistress. If he had pursued her properly, she might have even said yes. After all, her impression of him had been excellent from the start. But when it came to being a kept woman, Luo Ling simply wasn’t that kind of person.
Ye Fan stuffed the bank card into her hand. "You desperately need this money. If you really feel guilty about it, you can pay me back slowly after you graduate and find a job."
"Why are you being so nice to me?" Luo Ling thought he must like her to go to such lengths to help. For a girl experiencing the first stirrings of love, it was easy to fall for someone, especially a man as seemingly perfect as Ye Fan.
But Ye Fan simply said, "Because you remind me of my little sister."
Just a sister, huh...
Luo Ling was a little disappointed. She had thought he liked her. Still, a seed of love had been planted in her heart nonetheless.
"From now on, if anyone bullies you, call me," Ye Fan said. In his mind, he truly saw her as a substitute for Yue’er.
"Okay, brother!" Luo Ling replied.
Her sweet "brother" made Ye Fan’s heart bloom with joy.
Seeing that there was only one bed and that Luo Ling looked exhausted, Ye Fan said, "You should get some sleep. I’m not tired."
"Brother, you can sleep here too! The bed is really wide!" Luo Ling said, blushing.
"No, no!" Ye Fan hastily refused. Are you kidding? If something happened, it would be impossible to explain. I may be an upright gentleman, but there are times when the beast in me could take over. He couldn’t risk it.
Luo Ling seemed slightly disappointed. She climbed into bed and prepared to sleep.
Just then, there was a knock at the door.
Luo Ling jumped, startled, but Ye Fan just called out, "Who is it?"
"Room service! We have your toiletries!" a voice replied from the hallway.
"What a pain," Ye Fan grumbled, getting up to open the door.
The moment he did, a gun was pointed at his head as two police officers charged in. "Freeze! Police! Vice raid!"
When they saw Luo Ling sitting nervously on the bed, they were one hundred percent certain that an illicit transaction was taking place.
Ye Fan was about to explain when he saw a familiar face among them and his composure vanished. It was Fang Nan. He forced a smile that was uglier than crying. Talk about bad luck.
"You," Fang Nan said, equally shocked to find that the perpetrator this time was Ye Fan.
"Yeah! What a coincidence!" Ye Fan said awkwardly.
Fang Nan glanced at the disheveled Luo Ling on the bed, then shot Ye Fan a look of disgust. She couldn’t believe he would stoop so low as to prey on a schoolgirl. Of course, she was mostly furious. Ye Fan had a perfectly good woman—her—available to him, yet he went chasing after ’wildflowers.’ For that, she could never forgive him.
Her voice turned to ice. "Take them away!"
