Chapter 193: The Wealth of a Sovereign
The golden dawn of Ignis Prime broke across the expansive obsidian plains, casting long, elegant shadows over the massive refugee camp that had blossomed around the base of the new World-Tree, and Kai stood silently on the high observation ridge while he watched his newly liberated citizens wake up to a sky entirely free of ash.
He had not slept, because a cultivator at his level of power rarely needed rest, and he had instead spent the quiet hours of the night mapping out the exact logistical requirements needed to feed and shelter four billion souls across a recovering planet.
Yena walked up the sloping ridge to join him, her dark silk uniform perfectly pressed and her super-cooled obsidian spear resting casually against her shoulder, and she handed him a warm cup of spiced tea brewed from the fresh leaves of the Sylfen canopy.
"The Star-Forged veterans have finished organizing the supply lines, and Zara’s cavalry are currently running perimeter patrols to ensure no automated stragglers wander into the civilian zones," Yena reported smoothly, taking a slow sip from her own cup while she leaned comfortably against his side. "The people are completely safe, Kai, and they are actually starting to smile, which is a massive improvement from the terrified weeping we dealt with yesterday."
"It is a very good start, but smiles will not fill their stomachs when the Sylfen rations eventually run out, and we cannot permanently rely on High Elder Elara to feed an entire industrial sector," Kai noted thoughtfully, accepting the tea and taking a slow, appreciative drink of the rich brew. "We need to establish our own agricultural hubs, and we need to completely overhaul the infrastructure of this world so these people can govern themselves under the protection of the Winter Star."
Kai raised his free hand, allowing his glowing starlight mana to interface directly with the ambient energy of the planet, and he summoned his primary administrative panels into the cool morning air.
[System: Dominion Management Interface Accessed.]
[Current Cosmic Credits: 500,000]
[Available Sector Upgrades for ’Winter Star Industrial Sector’:]
[1. Purifying Atmosphere Emitters (Cost: 50,000 Credits) - Instantly removes lingering toxins from the lower atmosphere.]
[2. Frost-Seeded Agricultural Hubs (Cost: 150,000 Credits) - Transforms barren soil into hyper-fertile farming land protected by localized winter domains.]
[3. Starlight Transit Gates (Cost: 200,000 Credits) - Connects major planetary settlements for instantaneous civilian travel.]
"The System is incredibly helpful when it comes to planetary reconstruction," Kai observed calmly, tapping the glowing blue text to instantly purchase all three upgrades without a single second of hesitation. "I just spent four hundred thousand credits, and the entire planetary infrastructure is going to rapidly shift to accommodate the new parameters over the next few hours."
Yena watched in genuine fascination as a soft, pale blue light pulsed across the distant horizon, signaling the immediate activation of the purifying emitters, and the lingering grey smog hovering near the edges of the caldera instantly dissolved into clean, breathable air.
"You are essentially playing god with a limitless budget," Yena chuckled softly, shaking her head in fond amusement as she watched the landscape actively heal itself. "But I suppose if anyone deserves to rewrite the rules of reality, it is the man who just stopped a cosmic genocide."
"I am not playing god, I am simply cleaning up the terrible mess left behind by a bunch of arrogant tyrants," Kai corrected her smoothly, dismissing the administrative interface while he turned his glowing eyes back toward the bustling camp below. "And we still have a massive treasury vault filled with refined star-iron waiting to be processed, which means it is time to call our commanders and properly upgrade our vanguard before the rest of the galaxy realizes what we have done."
They descended the ridge together and walked back toward the central pavilion that the Star-Forged giants had constructed near the roots of the World-Tree, where Kaelen and Zara were already waiting around a heavy wooden table covered in tactical projections.
"Good morning, my King," Kaelen rumbled deeply, offering a respectful bow that made his heavy ancient armor clank softly. "My scouts have finished mapping the lower levels of the foundries, and the absolute volume of usable materials left behind by the Syndicate is truly staggering."
"I already had my Wyrms move the best crates of refined star-iron up to the main courtyard," Zara grinned, resting her boots casually on the edge of the tactical table while she crossed her arms behind her head. "It is incredibly durable stuff, but it is also exceptionally heavy, and my local blacksmiths back in the desert would need ten years to forge it into proper cavalry barding."
"We do not have ten years, and we certainly do not need traditional blacksmiths," Kai replied smoothly, walking up to the table and placing his hands flat against the glowing tactical map. "The Syndicate fleets currently stationed in the outer rim will eventually stop receiving their scheduled shipments of fuel, and when their commanders realize that Ignis Prime has fallen, they are going to turn their dreadnoughts around and attempt to take it back."
Kai accessed his primary interface once again, focusing his sovereign intent directly onto the massive crates of refined star-iron stacked in the nearby courtyard, and he channeled the remaining one hundred thousand Cosmic Credits directly into a mass-crafting protocol.
[System: Mass Forging Initiated.]
[Material Detected: 10,000 Tons of Refined Star-Iron.]
[Applying ’Winter Star’ sovereign domain to crafting process.]
[Crafting Complete: 3,000 Sets of ’Frost-Forged Wyrm Barding’ & 2,000 ’Star-Iron Phalanx Shields’.]
Outside the pavilion, a massive, blinding flash of pale blue light erupted from the courtyard, completely engulfing the stacked crates of raw metal.
When the bright flash finally faded, the crude iron blocks were entirely gone, completely replaced by thousands of flawless, beautifully crafted sets of heavy cavalry armor and towering shields that gleamed with a cold, absolute perfection.
Zara dropped her boots from the table and stared out the pavilion window in profound, unadulterated shock, her jaw dropping open as she realized that Kai had just instantly outfitted her entire cavalry division with masterwork armor in the blink of an eye.
"I am going to stop questioning how you do these things, because my brain simply cannot handle the logic," Zara breathed out, a feral, highly predatory smile spreading across her face as she looked at the flawless new gear. "With that kind of heavy barding, my warhorses could charge directly through the hull of a dreadnought without even breaking a single bone."
"That is exactly what I expect them to do when the Syndicate fleets finally arrive," Kai stated calmly, his deep voice carrying a quiet, undeniable authority that anchored the entire room. "But we are not going to sit here and wait for them to besiege our new citizens, because playing defensive is a terrible way to win a cosmic war."
"Then what is our next target, Cosmic Sovereign?" Kaelen asked eagerly, leaning forward over the tactical map while his silver eyes burned with ancient battle lust. "Do we march directly into the outer rim and hunt down their remaining dreadnoughts before they can regroup?"
"No," Kai answered smoothly, shaking his head while he reached out to adjust the glowing projection, shifting the map away from the red Syndicate worlds and zooming in on a massive, fractured ring of silver asteroids floating near the northern edge of the sector.
"The outer fleets are currently scattered, trying to secure their borders against local insurrections, which means they are highly vulnerable to piracy," Kai explained, tapping the glowing asteroid belt. "We are going to the Corsair’s Belt, because a true empire needs a proper navy, and I fully intend to hire the most dangerous, highly skilled mercenaries in the known universe to fly our new banners."
Yena narrowed her amber eyes, studying the chaotic swirl of space debris with a brilliant tactical focus.
"The Corsair’s Belt is a lawless haven run by rogue warlords and exiles," Yena noted sharply, crossing her arms over her chest. "They do not respect crowns or titles, Kai, and they will absolutely try to kill us the moment we open a gateway into their territory."
"I am fully aware of their reputation, Chief Enforcer," Kai smiled, a highly confident and thoroughly dangerous expression that completely transformed his handsome face. "But they respect overwhelming power, and they respect deep pockets. We currently possess both, and once I show them what happens to people who refuse a polite job offer from the Winter King, I am fairly certain they will be incredibly eager to join our payroll."
"It sounds like a highly entertaining diplomatic mission," Zara laughed brightly, standing up from the table and stretching her arms. "I will go have my riders equip their new star-iron barding, because we should definitely look our absolute best when we go threaten a bunch of space pirates."
"Have the vanguard ready to march by midday," Kai ordered Kaelen, offering the ancient giant a firm nod. "We will leave a heavy garrison of a thousand Star-Forged here to protect the refugees and assist with the agricultural hubs, but the rest of the legion is coming with us to the Belt."
"As you command, my King," Kaelen rumbled respectfully, offering a deep salute before turning to march out of the pavilion to organize his troops.
When the commanders had left to execute their orders, Yena stepped close to Kai, wrapping her arms around his neck and looking up into his glowing eyes with a mixture of deep affection and sharp curiosity.
"You are moving incredibly fast, Kai," Yena murmured softly, her thumb gently brushing against his scarred cheek. "We conquered a planet yesterday, and now you are already planning to annex a pirate haven before the sun even reaches its peak."
"I am moving fast because the universe is currently off balance, and we need to completely solidify our power before the older, ancient empires decide to wake up and challenge us," Kai replied honestly, resting his hands comfortably on her waist while he pulled her flush against his chest. "Besides, I promised you a flawless, peaceful kingdom, and I cannot rest until I have permanently removed every single threat that could ever cast a shadow over your smile."
Yena felt a warm flutter in her chest, completely melting the hardened military exterior she usually projected, and she leaned up to capture his lips in a slow, highly passionate kiss that tasted of cool mint and absolute devotion.
"Then let us go hire some pirates," Yena whispered against his skin, pulling back just enough to offer him a fierce, devastatingly beautiful smile. "Because I am highly eager to see how you plan to freeze an entire asteroid belt."
