Chapter 239 : Chapter 239
Chapter 239. Light Counters the Undead
Fulan knew that Anna probably had many stories of her own, but for now, dealing with the undead creature in front of them came first.
The necromantic skeleton mage let out another undead screech, but this screech was blocked by the Hard Scale Rock covering Fulan’s body and did not do her any real harm.
This was also one of the traits her protective spell had gained after reaching the Extraordinary rank: the ability to resist spells.
Though Fulan herself had not known that this undead screech could actually count as a kind of spell as well.
That screech from the necromantic skeleton mage issued a new command to the skeletons.
Hearing the order from their master, the skeletons all charged toward Fulan with weapons in hand, rushing right up to her before bringing their weapons down in vertical chops.
As far as the skeletons understood, they knew nothing of maneuvering or temporarily avoiding the enemy’s edge. They only obeyed orders and charged forward to attack.
Fulan naturally was not going to stand there and take the blows. She sidestepped, and white radiance burst once more from her longsword.
She merely swept the light across once, slashing her sword through the cluster of skeletons, and wherever that radiance passed, the soulfire burst apart and bones and limbs scattered all over the ground.
The skeletons that swarmed around her were no match for Fulan at all. She only needed a light sweep, and they would fall apart under her attacks.
As for the skeletons’ attacks, they were utterly insignificant to her.
To say nothing of the fact that most of their attacks could not hit her at all, Fulan’s body was extremely agile, and wind elements were also enhancing her movements.
Even when one or two skeletons occasionally managed to land a blow, the attacks were trivial in the face of Fulan’s powerful defenses.
These skeletons could not even trigger Fulan’s Shield-Spell Ring. She had set it so that the ring would activate only when her Hard Scale Rock failed to block an attack.
But obviously, when facing these skeletons, the Shield-Spell Ring was never going to activate.
The necromantic skeleton mage realized that as well. It opened its mouth wide again and released another undead screech, but unlike before, this one clearly carried offensive power.
The blue light from the soulfire inside its skull gradually brightened until it illuminated the entire space, draping the gray-black walls in a blue veil.
A visible blue ripple spread out from its mouth, like a stone dropped into still water, raising waves.
Those ripples spread outward, expanding through the entire chamber.
Anna had assumed it was the same harmless undead screech as before, so she only lightly covered her ears.
But when those blue ripples reached her, she felt as though a heavy hammer had struck her brain, and her vision nearly went black.
She swayed where she stood, only barely regaining her senses, then forced her eyes open, desperate to see what was happening on the battlefield.
Feeling the necromantic skeleton mage’s screech, fear rose in her heart.
She did not even dare imagine what would have happened if she had been here alone. She probably would have been controlled by that screech in an instant and then dragged off by those skeleton underlings.
Even now, she still had doubts about whether Fulan could defeat it. If it truly came to that, she would have no choice but to grab Fulan and run.
But the moment she opened her eyes, she saw something that eased her mind a little.
Fulan had taken up a posture for blocking an attack, as though she were parrying something at close range.
But this was an undead screech, a spell-like attack. What was the point of taking a stance meant for blocking physical attacks?
What Fulan was using was Sword Dance, the hallmark style of the Sword Chant School, just as Anna had once heard.
What reassured Anna even more was that a steady spell fluctuation was coming from Fulan’s sword, and from its clash against the undead screech, one could clearly sense the vast amount of Mental Power supporting it.
That blue wave was held in front of her, seemingly split in two by Fulan’s longsword, and it did not strike Fulan at all.
And once the necromantic skeleton mage had launched its attack, naturally it was Fulan’s turn to attack.
She did not begin by using [Equipment Augmentation] and [Equipment Overload] to strengthen her longsword and then release the powerful attack from its runes.
Instead, she first threw a fireball. She did not aim at any of the soulfires, but rather hurled the fireball at the area below its chest.
The attack struck directly. Dragon Flame immediately began burning along the necromantic skeleton mage’s ribs and started spreading at an astonishing speed.
Fulan was using her Mental Power to control the Dragon Flame and accelerate its spread. Otherwise, the Dragon Flame would probably have burned through the ribs immediately, leaving no time for it to spread at all.
It let out another screech, not for intimidation and not for attack, but because it had sensed a threat unlike any it had ever known.
It knew that if it did not deal with the flames spreading across its body, it would soon be close to true rest.
It drove the soulfire in its chest to burn more fiercely, and as the price for that, half of the skeletons still in motion suddenly lost all strength, their soulfires extinguished, and collapsed to the ground.
At the same time, the fiercely burning blue soulfire expanded beyond the skeleton’s body and collided directly with the Dragon Flame burning outside it.
In the end, those Dragon Flames were still somewhat too far from Fulan. Although her Mental Power was far stronger than its own, she still could not overpower it on its own body.
But Fulan had never intended to rely on Dragon Flame alone to burn it alive.
Just after the necromantic skeleton mage extinguished the Dragon Flame, before it even had time to feel pleased with itself for being so clever and using soulfire to resolve the crisis, it felt a shadow flash upward.
Then it felt extra weight settle on the two limbs that each held a soulfire.
Before it could react, it felt pain from the depths of its being—the pain that came when its soulfire burst apart.
Fulan had leaped directly above the necromantic skeleton mage and driven her light-covered longsword straight down.
It had to be said that light seemed to counter the undead perfectly. Fulan had originally thought it would take at least a First-Tier Spell to shatter a soulfire, but under this strike, it was instantly crushed to pieces.
Under Anna’s astonished gaze, Fulan exchanged attacks with that obviously powerful necromantic skeleton mage for only a little over ten seconds before extinguishing every one of its soulfires.
And every time one of its soulfires was destroyed, the necromantic skeleton mage let out a wretched screech, making its agony perfectly clear.
That pain prevented it from facing Fulan with any rational composure. It could only struggle desperately with its body, but that struggle was meaningless against Fulan.
Only after all the skeletons had fallen and their weapons had clattered to the ground did Anna finally snap out of that unreal feeling.
“So it’s over just like that?”
