The three remaining cases took four months.
Not because they were the most difficult work he had done — the Drevenmoor extraction had been harder, the Venmoor institutional negotiation had been more complex, the wellspring had required the specific function that nothing before had required.
They took four months because four months was the pace at which the work could be done honestly.
The two northern territories: remote, the correction work requiring sustained presence because the terrain meant the school’s graduates couldn’t easily reach them and the correction workers in the network hadn’t yet extended that far. He went north with Oren in the second month. The territories were what he expected — the wound present, the between-space thin, the root networks dense with the specific character of places that had been in the full absence longer than their geography suggested.
He did the work.
Oren supported the fragment expressions.
The school’s methodology running.
The gradient in the northern geography expressing through ice-melt patterns in spring — the thaw following the between-space gradient the way the rivers followed it in the delta territories, the melt moving toward the root nodes as the ice gave way.

The work in the two northern territories was complete by the end of the third month.
The third case — the institutional cluster in the eastern territories — was different.
Not a single institution with a single administrator who could be shown the cost and choose differently.
A network of forty-seven institutions that had developed a shared logic over two decades, each institution reinforcing the others’ founding assumptions, the network as a whole running the terminal momentum of a collective rather than the individual momentum Aldas had been running in Venmere.
He had encountered this configuration before in smaller forms.

Still active in the institutional cluster.
Still the intellectual center of the shared logic.
He went to find Crael.
Not with Oren’s targeted transmission.
With Hael’s approach — the conversation before the confrontation, the honest acknowledgment before the showing of the cost.
Crael was in his institution’s main building in the eastern territories, a man who had spent thirty-one years building something he believed in.
Kael sat across from him.
"Tell me what you built," he said.
Not a challenge. A genuine request.
Crael looked at him.
At Level 62 and the blank multiplier.
Then — the specific response of someone who had been asked a genuine question about work they cared about — he told him.

"The question is whether the founding logic can distinguish between the needs that remain and the needs that have been addressed." He paused. "Some institutions adapt. Some maintain the founding logic past the point where the logic serves the need." He paused. "What you built thirty-one years ago was right for what was needed then." He paused. "Some of what you built is still right for what is needed now." He paused. "Some of it isn’t." He paused. "I’m asking you to look at both honestly."
Crael was quiet for a long time.
Then he asked to see the cost data.
Not the aggregate. The specific cases. The specific people in the territories where the institutional cluster’s shared logic was maintaining practices that the between-space’s return had made unnecessary.
Oren transmitted.
Specifically.
Not dramatically.
The present-tense cost of the specific outdated practices.
Crael received it.
Was quiet for a longer time.
"Two weeks," he said. "I need two weeks to review the founding documents against the current needs."
"Take the time," Kael said.
He took two weeks.
At the end of the two weeks he sent a message to each of the forty-seven institutions in the cluster.
The message identified fourteen practices that the cluster had been maintaining because the founding logic required them and that the current conditions no longer required. He asked each institution to convene a review of those fourteen practices with reference to the current between-space quality in their territory.
Not a mandate.
An invitation from the origin point.
The institutions drew from the origin.
The origin updating.
Thirty-eight of the forty-seven responded within the month.
Thirty-six agreed with Crael’s assessment.
Two disagreed and proposed modifications to the assessment that Crael incorporated into a revised document.
The remaining nine institutions took another six weeks.
In the end all forty-seven had reviewed the fourteen practices.
Thirty-one of the practices were revised or retired.
Three were maintained because the cluster’s review confirmed they still served the current need.
Not the invitation approach as a single conversation.

His mother noted it.

It was a fact.
One: the between-space present in all but the most remote unreached territories. The institutional residue work largely complete. The correction work in the remaining territories being carried by the network’s correction workers and the school’s graduates without requiring his specific function at the deepest layer.
One: the Ashrow’s gutters running clear and the Domain covering the full city and the virtuous cycle self-sustaining and the deep correspondence ambient and the school running its twelfth class and Dael documenting the patterns of the healed world and Sera writing the history of the second period and Kel working on the material the twelfth class was producing.
One: the between-space present.
The healer part of the healed.
The work lighter.
Sufficient.
He sat at the kitchen table on a Tuesday morning — the oversight board wasn’t until the afternoon — and read the dispatch from Senn that had come through the threading network overnight.
Senn was eighty-five years old.
The dispatch was long by Senn’s standards.
The settlement is at what I would describe as the ordinary quality of the between-space’s presence. Not the pre-withdrawal era’s quality — I don’t have the direct comparison — but the quality Brill describes from the between-space’s side and the quality Lyr describes from the coal keeper’s body-memory and the quality Nara reads in the pre-withdrawal node records. The settlement is approaching that quality.
