Su Yu considered for a moment, then nodded.

Feeling the astonishing softness and springiness of her arm, and the delicate, feminine scent that wafted to his nose, Su Yu couldn’t help but tense up slightly.

He turned his head with a helpless look, meeting Qian Qinghong’s beautiful eyes, which were sparkling with a cunning smile. "Qinghong, please don’t misunderstand," he explained in a low voice. "That man was staring at you in a vulgar, lecherous way—he’s clearly consumed by lust. I only pretended we were husband and wife to cut off any ideas he had and prevent him from finding excuses to pester you."

Qian Qinghong let out a charming laugh. Instead of letting go, she leaned even more of her weight against Su Yu.

"Of course I know Brother Su was just helping me ward off trouble. How could I possibly misunderstand? However..."

She adopted a rarely seen, girlish demeanor and winked playfully at Su Yu. "Since we’re putting on a play, we have to make it convincing, don’t we? If we seem too distant when the fighting starts, won’t that fellow with his ulterior motives see right through our act?"

Su Yu felt like Qian Qinghong had him completely figured out, but he didn’t know how to argue. He could only quickly change the subject. "Qinghong, that Linyuan City—is it the border city in Snow State that has always traded with Black Stone City?"

"That’s right, dear husband! Almost all trade heading to Snow State passes through Linyuan City."

Hearing Qian Qinghong’s confirmation, a thought flashed through Su Yu’s mind.
