Chapter 589 - 587: A Proper House Raid
That’s right, he really did just fall from the sky.
That was, in fact, what had happened.
If Celeste Grant were standing here, she would have surely remarked on what a heavy burden of blame they were being forced to carry.
What the two of them said was true—couldn’t be truer. Only the one who falsely accuses you knows how innocent you truly are. But did that matter? If not for her son, this black-hearted pair would have just stolen someone else’s child anyway, so it wasn’t as if they were being wrongly accused.
And yet, they were still trying to argue their way out of it.
Aaron Sinclair’s gaze swept over them as he said in a low voice, "Whether you admit to kidnapping me or not is no longer important. What is a fact is that you sent people to kill me. The moment their blades swung at me, you became my mortal enemies. I thought to myself back then, as long as I survived, I would come back to settle the score with each and every one of you."
He gently opened the palm of one hand. "And look, haven’t I returned? Not only have I come back to Atheria openly and honorably, but I’ve also found my birth parents. I have my own name, and they dote on me. It turns out my real mother waits for me to come home to a hot meal she’s cooked. So, you see, I’m not some unwanted child after all."
Mrs. Dawson’s mouth fell open, as if everything had suddenly clicked into place. "So, you’re doing this to get revenge on us. The Imperial Guard... this is your doing? You actually had them come to the General’s Mansion to arrest people. No, you can’t just arrest people!"
"This is the General’s Mansion! Even if you’re the Prince of the Royal Mansion, you have no right to arrest us!"
As if grasping at a lifeline, Caleb Jacobs also spoke up hurriedly. "That’s right! You can’t do this to us! Even if we wronged you in some ways, haven’t you returned safe and sound? Is there any misunderstanding we can’t talk through? This is the place where you grew up. Are you really going to destroy it just to be satisfied?"
Hearing this accusation, the corner of Aaron Sinclair’s mouth twitched. ’Some people really do live as the center of their own universe.’ No wonder even after usurping another’s identity, they couldn’t make any real contribution to the world and could only live out their days on this little patch of land.
He glanced sideways at them, unable to help but remark with a sigh, "Impressive. Truly impressive. I never knew a person’s skin could be so thick. I’ve really learned something today. You don’t still think this is just a personal grudge, do you?"
Aaron Sinclair pointed a finger at the people kneeling all over the courtyard, and then at the two of them.
"Caleb Jacobs, death is at your door and you still don’t understand the situation. This is no longer a personal matter between us. You murdered and impersonated an official of the Imperial Court. That’s a capital crime punishable by the execution of your entire clan. It is my uncle, the Emperor, who wants your property seized and your clan exterminated. As for me settling my own scores with you... that’s just a bonus."
Seizure and extermination. The words landed with heavy finality.
This finally snapped them back to reality.
They had been too shocked seeing the boy they had cast out like a worn-out shoe suddenly transform into the Princely Heir of The Warden’s Northern Manor. Their minds had been in chaos, and they had subconsciously latched onto the single fact that this boy had become a Princely Heir.
Now, with their heads clear, they finally remembered. Their list of crimes wasn’t limited to sending assassins after the son they’d driven out. There was also the matter of murdering the General of Cavalry and stealing his identity over a decade ago.
No, besides his dead brother, no one else knew that secret. And even if someone did, what could they do? It had been so long; they would never find any evidence.
That’s right. There was no evidence.
At this thought, he roared hysterically.
"Nonsense! You’re talking nonsense! I am Caleb Jacobs! What’s this about murdering someone and stealing their identity? I don’t know what you’re talking about! I won’t admit to something I haven’t done!"
"I am the General of Cavalry, personally appointed by the Emperor! You say I’m not? Do you have evidence? Bring it out! If you don’t have any, then this is slander!"
Aaron Sinclair smiled faintly. "Rest assured, even if you are to die, we will make sure you die knowing exactly why. After all, the laws of Kelldorn do not permit the wrongful conviction of an innocent person."
As he spoke, he turned his back and waved a hand.
"Take them away. To the Sky-Prison."
At his order, the Imperial Guard stationed there moved at once, seizing everyone and dragging them away. Instantly, the air filled with wails and cries of despair.
"No... you can’t take me!"
"I’m innocent... I’m innocent! I want to see the Holy Emperor! The Prince of the Royal Mansion is using his office to settle a private score! This is a personal vendetta! I’m not guilty!"
Seeing the imposter still screaming about his innocence at death’s door, the Commander of the Imperial Guard, Nate Alden, kicked him squarely. "What’s all the racket? Keep shouting and I’ll cut off your other ear."
Nate Alden waved his hand, and his men dragged the prisoners away.
As Mrs. Dawson was being dragged away, she reached out, trying to grab Aaron Sinclair’s hand, and screamed.
"Nathan... Nathan, save us! We know we were wrong. I was wrong... I was wrong to drive you away! I shouldn’t have sent people to kill you! I know I was wrong now!"
"Forgive me! I really do love you, I always thought of you as my own flesh and blood! Nathan... Nathan..."
’Loving me... means trying to kill me?’
Aaron Sinclair rubbed his arms, a shiver running down his spine.
"That’s a love I can’t afford. No, thank you."
"Who is Nathan? Don’t just shout random names. I am the Princely Heir, Aaron Sinclair. Speaking of which, where is that fine son of yours, Nathan Jacobs—no, I mean Arthur Jacobs? Don’t you worry. I’ll have him brought back. I’ll make sure your whole family has a proper reunion in your prison cell. It’s getting late today, and even executions require a queue. But tomorrow, first thing tomorrow morning at the marketplace, you’ll definitely be on the chopping block. A family should be together, after all. Complete and whole, not a single one missing."
Hearing this, Mrs. Dawson’s eyes went wide. She probably never imagined that this boy, so young, could speak of beheadings so casually.
"No... You can’t do this."
"Arthur... my son... He’s your brother! How can you be so cruel?"
Aaron Sinclair waved a dismissive hand, his back still to them.
"Stop right there. In my generation of the Royal Clan, I am the only one. Where would I get a brother? Impersonating royalty is an even greater crime. How annoying. Drag them away, drag them away."
They had shown him not a single shred of affection back then. Now that they knew they were wrong, it was too late to come begging. Aaron Sinclair knew they didn’t regret their actions, they only regretted that they were about to die.
"Nathan... Nathan..."
Mrs. Dawson’s voice faded into the distance. Aaron Sinclair listened without a flicker of emotion. He just stood there and sighed, perhaps feeling a hint of wistfulness.
Standing beside him, Nate Alden saw him standing motionless and assumed he was upset, so he couldn’t help but offer a word of comfort.
"Princely Heir, don’t be sad. That family isn’t worth it."
Aaron Sinclair looked up at him, a quizzical expression on his face. "What are you talking about? Do I look sad to you? Heh, I couldn’t be happier seeing them meet their downfall. Alright, stop standing around. A property seizure should look like a property seizure."
He waved his hand lightly.
"Men! Clear everything out for me."
"Especially any place they might have hidden Silver. Every corner, under the floorboards, beneath the flowerbeds in the backyard, under the trees. Tap on things, dig around. This is all money that belongs to the national treasury. Not a single coin can be missed."
Nate Alden’s face was a mask of astonishment.
’This Young Master...’ he thought, ’he doesn’t look like a first-timer when it comes to seizing property. He’s so proficient at this.’
