Chapter 287: Celebratory Gift from the Academy (Bonus PS)
Kai was still sleepy, but seeing Matilda only wearing his black shirt woke him up completely.
His mind wasn’t on the box at all because of that.
Instead, he was still reliving the pleasure he felt last night, and that made him aroused again.
If anything, this was Matilda’s fault for not covering up early in the morning.
But when the last plaster sealing the box was sliced, and she opened the box—the entire room was suddenly filled with the pleasant air of mana. Only then did Kai snap out of his trance and lean in to take a look.
"What is this?" Matilda’s brows furrowed.
"I think it’s a shield." Kai looked at the scaled shield attentively—and realized that it was one that he recognized. "I think it was Chester’s shield. You know—the one that has wind affinity. The one he used to fight me."
"You’re right."
Matilda took out the shield that was lighter than she anticipated and then put it aside.
And then, her eyes bore witness to the other things hiding under the shield.
Shining ores stacked on top of one another in a pile, covering the whole bottom of the box.
Legal mana ores.
"How many are there...?" Matilda rasped in shock.
Considering that they were Angels, nothing more than the workers for mankind—this many legal mana ores was a sight to see. Of course, she had seen even more mana ores than this, but the fact that these were legal made them more tantalizing.
"About three hundred, maybe." Kai shrugged nonchalantly.
"Why would the academy give you so much mana ore?"
"A welcoming gift? If not that, then it’s probably a celebratory gift for becoming a Red Prince."
"You didn’t seem too thrilled." Matilda glanced at him. "Are you getting arrogant now?"
"Mana ores won’t be going anywhere," Kai poked his index finger into Matilda’s side. "But when else would we be alone like this again after right now? It’s not that I am arrogant, but I have my priorities straight."
"You’re still going with that? My entire body is sore, so no." Matilda slapped his hand away.
Kai raised his arms and backed away, deciding to give up.
Seems like he won’t be getting any action this morning.
"Legal mana ores would be allocated to us, too. So, we would have a steady path to grow."
"How do you know that?"
"I spoke with Dean Lincoln about my privileges as a Red Prince. One of the privileges was the Special Accolade. I’m going to get one hundred mana ores per week, and each member of the Ambrosia Pact would get ten."
Matilda turned to look at Kai in surprise.
That was incredible news.
Most Angels advanced at a crawl—due to lack of resources. Mana ores were basically beyond their reach, so they could only turn to null crystals instead. But even those couldn’t be bought easily; they had to be traded for null gems.
Five null gems for one null crystal.
And that was minuscule for them.
Killing five Star Beasts only to earn a single null crystal was already hard enough. But the real insult came after—as one null crystal barely compared to one mana ore. Both stored the same amount of mana, but the crystal’s energy was rough, making absorption far less efficient.
If an Angel could only absorb fifty percent of a mana ore’s mana—the yield from a null crystal would be even lower. Because of that, Angels, even the seniors, weren’t that much stronger in terms of rank compared to the new Angels.
All of the seniors were stronger due to the techniques taught along the way.
Enhancing their bodies to better utilize their bloodlines.
So, this Special Accolade is a big deal.
"Are you... going to use all of your share of mana ores?" Matilda asked, her voice gentler.
"Hm? Of course, I would. What else would I d—" Kai raised a brow, and then a teasing smile crept to his face. "Do you want more than ten mana ores? Shame. I would have agreed to give you more had you been a little nicer to me earlier."
Matilda’s mouth opened, and then closed again.
She looked at Kai and realized what he meant.
’I’m still sore down there, but I can still use my mouth.’ She thought inwardly.
Seeing the change on Matilda’s face, Kai’s eyes widened. "Wait, are you actually thinking of doing it? I was only playing around. Wow, Matilda... I did not know you were that desperate. Do you really want the mana ores?"
"No, I didn’t!" Matilda’s face turned red like a tomato, embarrassed that Kai read her mind.
"Besides, it wouldn’t be fair for me to do that since you’re also enjoying it."
"Last time I checked, I’m not the one who cum seven times last night."
"Such a vulgar tongue. I’m pretty sure you climaxed more times than me."
"Okay, shut up. I’m not talking about this anymore."
Matilda turned away and saw something else inside the box.
Not a mana ore—this one is bigger and gold.
"What’s that?"
"Heart of Dragon."
"What does it do?"
"Double the mana of a Supernal and increase mana efficiency."
"That’s really good for you, no? Your mana stat is already insanely high."
"Yeah, I’ll use it later." Kai shrugged with a light exhale—and then reached for the shield and handed it over to Matilda. "You should take this. It’s Grade-1 Enchanter Gear, and it has wind affinity with an origin. It’s strong enough—so that you can use your Legacy Skill to make the sword you always used instead of a shield."
"Are you sure?" Matilda held the shield, but her eyes were still on Kai. "It’s a good shield."
"A shield wouldn’t complement my fighting style."
"In that case, I’ll accept it. Thank you."
Kai flashed a smile and stretched, deciding that it was time to shower.
But as he was about to enter the master bedroom, Matilda stopped him again.
"Right... What about your scimitar?"
"Hm?"
"Did you forget? Your scimitar broke. I can make it again for you if you want."
"Please do. I was already used to wearing that scimitar."
"Okay."
Kai went back into the master bedroom and clicked his tongue in displeasure.
He had forgotten that the Blood-phantom Scimitar was broken.
I wonder... Can I get the Chalice of Orestes the First Victim again? Or is it gone now?
Given the effect that it gave to the scimitar—it would be a real bummer if the chalice could only be used once before it was lost forever. Either way, Kai would need to check. But the thought of facing that blood-cloaked entity again sent a cold shiver down his spine.
I hope I don’t go through the initial way and be directly teleported to the first checkpoint.
Moments later, the morning air turned crisp and cool.
Kai and Matilda stepped out of the house together; the door clicked shut behind them.
He glanced at her and nearly laughed.
Matilda had swapped her usual black—or dark red shirt that she normally wears underneath her uniform for a black turtleneck, the high collar doing its best to hide the visible kiss marks that marred her neck.
One stubborn bruise peeked out from the top.
But so long as she kept her head tilted down, no one should be able to notice.
"It’s not funny," Matilda complained as she shot him a warning look. "Just the usual wearing is already hot under the sun, and now I’m wearing a turtleneck."
"Kinda funny." Kai snickered—but he quickly bit the inside of his cheek and looked away to fight the blossoming grin.
As they reached outside the fence, the neighbouring Red Prince also emerged from his own house at the same moment. Behind him trailed six female seniors; their laughter was light and musical in the morning air.
By the Gods, six? What is he? Zeus?
Kai shook his head as he wasn’t expecting the neighbouring Red Prince to have six girls.
Just then, the senior Red Prince noticed him, and then changed direction after telling the girls to go on ahead without him—striding over with the easy confidence of someone who owned every street he walked.
"You’re the new guy, right?" He pointed at Kai and asked.
Kai nodded, but his gaze still glanced over to the six girls walking out the main gate.
Noticing this, the senior Red Prince laughed a little. "Not a normal sight, huh?"
"Something like that," Kai replied, agreeing with the statement.
"Then you’d be surprised to see Red Princess Nikia," the senior Red Prince pointed his thumb at the house across from his. "That’s her house. And she normally brought like ten guys. But hey, a Supernal of Eos, the Goddess of the Dawn, is sturdy like that."
Kai’s mind broke at what he heard.
But he thought Dorian would probably like that kind of thing.
"Anyway, I apologize for last night. I was still drunk with the Ilamla Extract, and wasn’t really thinking straight." The senior Red Prince reached out his hand. "My name is Red Prince Ignas. I’m last year’s Red Prince."
"Red Prince Kai," Kai accepted the handshake. "And don’t worry about last night. Turns out it was a false flag."
"Oh?" Red Prince Ignas shifted his gaze towards Matilda.
"I was planning a surprise for him," Matilda explained. "He thought I was an intruder."
"I see. I see." Red Prince Ignas turned. "In that case, let’s get going, or we’ll be late. Pleasant to meet you two."
He waved his hand and walked out of the cluster.
Kai watched Red Prince Ignas’ back going further away, and then grunted as an elbow stabbed into his side. He snapped towards Matilda with a clear frown—confused as to why she even did that. "What was that for? Are you picking a fight?"
"You’re looking at him like he was your idol or something," Matilda sneered. "Are you really impressed that he has six girls?"
"How did you even come to that conclusion?"
"I have eyes."
Matilda walked on ahead as Kai gave chase, arguing about what she assumed.
Both of them continued—separating gradually as they approached where the other freshmen had gathered. No need for them to stand out—like a sore thumb by coming from the same direction, not from the dormitory.
Along the way, Kai was greeted warmly by the other students.
It was very different compared to before he became the Red Prince.
Before, he was invisible.
Now, he was a high-profile figure who was respected everywhere he went.
Upon exiting the academy, Kai’s eyes locked onto two figures among a crowd of students.
Dorian and Byran were jumping up and down to loosen up their bodies before the morning exercise, seemingly energetic and in a very good mood. A smile crept to Kai’s lips as he saw them like that.
Last night must’ve gone well for them, too.
