I am the Only Son of Nyx

Chapter 68: Change of Dynamic

It had been quite some time, but Kai couldn’t believe he had forgotten about this person.

Forgotten about Roan.

Deep down, at the start of the Blood Rite, Kai was hoping that someone could take Roan down so that he wouldn’t have to worry about this insane bully. But alas, those who are like Roan are precisely the ones who survived.

Perhaps, Roan was Lion in his Blood Rite.

Kai didn’t know, but he wouldn’t be surprised if that turned out to be the case.

Like a hungry carnivore who had finally stumbled upon prey, Roan grinned excitedly. Giving no chance to say anything, he grabbed Kai by his face and dragged him through the automatic glass gate, entering the training facility section of the academy.

He forcefully opened a door to a training chamber and threw Kai inside.

A student was inside, and he was startled by the commotion.

"Scram," Roan gestured for the student to leave. Realizing the man he was dealing with, the timid student wasted no time and sprinted out of the chamber. He didn’t want to end up like Kai. "Here I thought that you’re dead. That I won’t have the chance to teach you a lesson for disrespecting me."

Slowly, he closed the door behind him.

He was moving slowly, like he wanted to savor the moment. Not in a hurry.

"Class is starting soon," Kai rose to his feet. "Why don’t you piss off and spare us the trouble?"

"Look at this piece of shit," Roan pivoted around and stared at Kai. He scoffed at what he was seeing. "Seems like you’ve grown some balls after passing the Blood Rite. Do you think you’re someone now? Unlike you, who certainly survived because of luck, I earned my win.

"I killed five people," He raised both hands as if they were still bloodied. "Five students with my bare hands."

Kai remained silent.

He didn’t need to engage with this moron.

"We’re going to be late."

"This guy... You should worry about yourself instead!"

Roan charged like a raging bull.

He threw a straight punch to test the water, to see how much Kai had improved.

Kai rolled to the side, avoiding the punch as it slammed into the wall with a heavy thud.

I’ve punched the wall in the training chamber, and my punch didn’t make that sound.

It seemed Kai wasn’t the only one who had gotten stronger. And more importantly, Roan’s bloodline is focused on physical strength, so he has the edge in physicality. Kai didn’t know what bloodline Roan had, but it should be a God, not a Divine Beast.

Had his bloodline belonged to a Divine Beast, then there would be more mutations to his body.

But he looked normal.

"Is that how you survived?" Roan smirked. "By dodging and running away?"

Laughing, Roan charged again.

He threw a flurry of punches and kicks—showing that he had gotten a lot stronger. Perhaps his physique had always been a tad higher than Kai’s, but his attacks and movements were now flowing.

Back then, during their first clash, both of them were still amateurish.

Throwing punches and kicks for the sake of hurting the person on the other side.

Now, the attacks came with precise intent.

Kai could see that Roan had gotten better at fighting.

Both of them were no longer untrained.

Survival hastened their growth, forcing them to learn how to fight quickly.

However, Kai is much faster now.

No matter how fluid and swift Roan’s offense was, he could dodge and block it. Though he’s surprised by Roan’s growth, the one who was most surprised was Roan. He was supposed to only be fighting Kai, but he felt like fighting someone equal.

It shouldn’t be like this.

Kai is a Lesser Angel, and he’s a High Angel.

And the fact that Kai managed to keep up only made him angrier.

"Stop dodging and fight me!"

Roan moved even faster. He switched from trying to punch or kick to trying to grab Kai, which was good thinking, as he has the edge when it comes to strength. If he catches Kai, then he’ll have the advantage.

But even so, Kai was still doing the same thing.

In the midst of the battle, he could spot opportunities when he could land a counterattack.

Land vicious blows that would turn the tables around.

I want to hit him.

Kai ducked down and avoided a hand swiping for his collar.

I want to smash his face in.

He blocked a low kick and leaped away, dodging a massive hand reaching for his head.

Having the strength that he currently has, Kai was holding back so hard not to fight back. As much as he wanted to, he didn’t want to escalate this. If he showed Roan that this would lead nowhere, maybe that’ll get him to back off.

But things didn’t go as smoothly.

Kai leaned back, watching the slow fist cruise past two inches away from his nose.

And in the motion, he could see that Roan was already sweating.

Not long before Roan would realize that this wasn’t working, but bad luck struck. Kai’s foot hit something and messed up his balance. It was the bed. He had been dodging and didn’t see that it was now already behind him.

Seeing the grin blooming on Roan’s face, it seemed this had been calculated.

"Gotcha!"

Roan burst forward and grabbed Kai’s wrist.

His iron grip wrapped tightly as he pulled and threw Kai to the other side.

Kai slammed into the wall and bounced; the air inside his lungs was forced out. He blinked and saw a perfect roundhouse kick, swinging like a whipping blur. It was too late for him to react as the foot slammed into his side, rattling his ribcage.

Alongside the air, reason was knocked out of Kai’s mind.

His instincts, cultivated by the Blood Rite, resurfaced.

"Do you understand now?!" Roan laughed ecstatically, watching a trickle of blood drizzling down from the corner of Kai’s lips. That kick hurts him. "You’re nothing in front of me! When I extended a helping hand, you should’ve accepted it!"

Giving no time for Kai to recover, Roan charged, spreading his arms for a bear-hug.

In the last second, Kai squeezed through the gap and avoided him.

Pain exploded behind Roan’s knee, and his heavy joint gave way, driving him down to a single knee with a grunt. He twisted, murder in his gaze, searching for the eel who struck him from behind.

But his eyes never found a face. They found a fist.

And it’s already right before him.

His instincts were screaming at him that the punch was dangerous.

But there’s no time to do anything.

Roan closed his eyes instinctively, and yet, the punch never came.

Slowly, hesitantly, he opened his eyes again. The fist was still there, frozen in the air, trembling just before his face. He shifted his gaze past it and saw Kai. Panting. Shaking with the effort of not finishing the blow.

Whatever had screamed inside Kai to let it fly, he’d strangled it silent.

I can’t.

Kai couldn’t leave a mark on Roan’s face.

He’s now a Lesser Angel again, while Roan is a High Angel.

If he were caught beating up Roan, especially in the main building’s premises, he’d probably be punished severely, or perhaps even executed on the spot. However—if it were the other way around, the punishment for Roan would be mild.

A little scolding or maybe have his weekly quota increased a bit.

Normally, Kai didn’t need to be this worried.

But he could feel that he was being watched everywhere.

Probably the Chancellor is keeping tabs on him, so he can’t draw any attention right now.

Professor Hera said that after the Blood Rite, the students are prohibited from harming each other.

Since they were now Blooded Angels, they have more responsibility for mankind. Premature death isn’t allowed. And more importantly, he was now under the Chancellor’s radar. He can’t risk it. He can’t die after everything he did.

Not until he brought these bastards down.

Kai front-kicked Roan in the chest, hurling him away.

Just then, the door was opened.

Kai immediately retreated, leaping away in case it was a professor.

It was a student. Two students, to be exact.

"Call the professor!" Kai roared, seeing no change in Roan’s face that he would stop this farce.

Roan slowly rose to his feet.

His body was shaking visibly, and when he lifted his gaze—the streak of wrath could be seen evidently across his face. Kai had held back. In this very moment, even though Roan was the High Angel, Kai held back.

Kai’s audacity burned worse than any blow.

It seemed like Roan was the weaker one here when he was supposed to be the stronger one.

"Norman. Bagas. Get in and close the door again," Roan whispered with hate.

Kai’s brows dipped into a frown.

Since Roan knew these two students’ names, they must be from Ursa Minor.

More trouble for Kai.

"Grab him and pin him to the wall," Roan pointed at Kai. His voice was arctic cold now, as he had had enough of this farce. "Hold him steady. I’m not going to stop until this bastard learns his place."

"Gladly..."

"Yes, Sir."

The two students advanced with nasty, knowing smiles—peeling apart midway to flank Kai from both sides. They hadn’t been in the cafeteria when he humiliated Roan. Frankly, they did not care, but they would gladly beat Kai senseless anyway.

After the Blood Rite, having a punching back wouldn’t be so bad.

Realizing the situation he was in, Kai’s patience finally snapped.

He was full of hate and anger.

Roan isn’t one of his targets. Just a pawn, a victim of the lunacy going on in the sky.

Other than worrying about the Chancellor, that’s also another reason why he held back. But holding back costs patience. And he had run out of patience right now. Kai is still only a man, and under these circumstances, he wanted nothing more than to crush Roan’s skull.

But he’ll give one last chance.

Last warning, Roan. You’d better understand after this.

Kai dashed forward.

Both students on the sides were too late to react.

Surprised by this sudden burst of movement, Roan raised his arms, smiling ecstatically as it seemed Kai had already made his decision. Already decided to fight back. Kai planted his foot firmly against the floor, channeling the Inner Strength of Stone, and swung.

The punch was blocked by Roan’s arms, but the impact wiped the smile from his face.

Roan was pushed back.

Before his mind could catch up, Kai had already hooked Roan’s leg and yanked. Roan hit the ground hard. A vicious cross cracked across his face in the same breath, and he tasted blood. And then Kai was moving again.

He grabbed Roan’s wrist, flipped him over, and drove a knee into the spine.

Roan was pinned before he could even think to resist.

"Let me correct something, you annoying piece of shit." Kai leaned down and whispered. "I did not pass the trial by luck."
