Meanwhile, Kandarpaasura had reached a very different conclusion.

The golden stallion was still racing away from the Yali at tremendous speed, carrying him deeper toward the opposite side of the forest.

Kandarpaasura had managed to remain seated on its back, and as far as he was concerned, that was enough.

He had mounted it.

He had not been thrown off.

Therefore, in his mind, the second stage was complete.

A satisfied grin slowly appeared across his face.

"That’s enough."

The stallion continued running.

Kandarpaasura looked toward the distant battlefield where the Yali was waiting and then back at the horse beneath him.

The creature clearly had no intention of turning around, and Kandarpaasura had no intention of allowing an animal to dictate where the battle would take place.

"If you won’t take me there willingly..."

His eyes began glowing with dark energy.

"...then I will make you."

He reached forward and grabbed the golden stallion’s head, pulling firmly on its mane as the creature continued galloping.

The horse immediately shook its head, trying to free itself from his grasp.

Kandarpaasura’s expression hardened.

"Stop resisting."

Darkness began gathering around his fingers.

Unlike the golden radiance surrounding the stallion, Kandarpaasura’s power was cold and unnatural.

Black tendrils of energy crawled across his hands and slowly spread toward the horse’s head.

The stallion gave a frightened neigh.

Kandarpaasura tightened his grip.

"You belong to me now."

The darkness suddenly flowed forward.

It seeped toward the horse’s ears, entering them like streams of black smoke.

The stallion’s body jolted violently as the foreign energy passed through it.

Its golden eyes widened.

Then the golden light within them began disappearing.

Blackness spread across its pupils.

The creature’s movements became slower.

Its frantic breathing steadied.

Kandarpaasura watched with satisfaction as the darkness continued spreading through its body.

He was not trying to earn the horse’s trust.

He was not trying to cooperate with it.

He wanted to control it.

He wanted its will erased beneath his own command, turning the magnificent celestial creature into nothing more than an extension of his power.

"Now listen to me."

The stallion’s ears twitched.

"Turn around."

For a moment, the horse continued forward.

Kandarpaasura’s eyes narrowed.

"Turn around!"

The darkness inside the creature intensified.

The stallion suddenly dug its hooves into the ground.

Its enormous body skidded across the forest floor, golden soil scattering beneath its feet.

Slowly, its head turned.

Its blackened eyes faced Kandarpaasura.

A satisfied smile spread across the asura’s face.

"Good."

He pointed toward the battlefield.

"Now take me to the Yali."

The stallion began turning.

But something was different.

Its body was obeying him, yet its movements lacked the natural confidence it had possessed before.

The creature no longer seemed like the proud celestial beast that had chosen its own path.

Its eyes remained dark, its expression empty.

Kandarpaasura did not care.

As far as he was concerned, that was precisely what he wanted.

"No hesitation. No fear. No disobedience."

He tightened his grip.

"Just follow my command."

The stallion began galloping back toward the battlefield.

Kandarpaasura leaned forward, his grin returning as the trees blurred around them.

"Now, Devara..."

His eyes burned with anticipation.

"...let us see who reaches that Yali first."

But Kandarpaasura failed to notice one crucial thing.

Far behind him, the golden horses that had remained near the lake had begun watching the corrupted stallion.

Their golden eyes were fixed upon it.

And their expressions were no longer merely aggressive.

They looked angry.

Meanwhile, Devara had already prepared himself for the confrontation.

The golden stallion beneath him thundered across the battlefield, its powerful hooves striking the earth as it carried him directly toward the Yali.

Devara sat firmly upon its back, one hand holding the flowing golden mane while Pinakodanda rested in his other hand.

Ahead of them, the Yali had finally begun moving.

Yet there was no urgency in its movements.

The enormous beast walked toward them almost leisurely, each heavy step pressing deep impressions into the earth.

Its massive head remained raised, and its eyes regarded Devara and the golden stallion with an almost dismissive calm.

It did not appear to consider them a serious threat.

Devara noticed that immediately.

"So you don’t take us seriously."

His green eyes narrowed.

"That may be your first mistake."

He lifted Pinakodanda.

The golden stallion continued charging straight toward the Yali.

Devara placed an arrow against the bowstring and drew it back.

The moment the string tightened, blue Yogic energy began flowing from his body into the weapon.

The energy spiralled around the arrow, gathering more and more rapidly until the shaft was surrounded by a brilliant vortex of blue light.

The swirling power condensed into the form of an Astra, its radiance illuminating Devara’s face as the golden stallion raced beneath him.

Devara’s expression became completely focused.

He pointed the weapon directly at the approaching Yali.

"Let’s see how you handle this."

He released the string.

SHOOM!

The Astra shot forward at incredible speed.

It became nothing more than a streak of brilliant light as it raced past the Yali and disappeared into the heavens.

The Yali stopped.

It looked upward.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

The battlefield became strangely silent.

Devara watched the sky.

The golden stallion slowed beneath him.

Then...

BOOOOM!

A massive bolt of lightning descended from the heavens.

It struck the Yali directly.

The impact illuminated the entire forest.

The Yali’s enormous body convulsed as the lightning coursed through it, its roar erupting across the battlefield with such force that birds fled from the surrounding trees.

Golden dust and fragments of earth were thrown into the air.

Devara watched carefully.

The Yali had been wounded.

Burn marks spread across its massive body, and several deep injuries had been carved into its hide by the force of the Astra.

For a moment, the creature remained motionless.

Then something strange happened.

The wounds began to move.

The damaged flesh slowly pulled itself back together.

The burned portions hissed as new tissue formed beneath them.

Deep cuts closed.

Torn muscles knitted themselves together.

Even the marks left by the lightning began disappearing as the Yali’s body regenerated at an astonishing speed.

Within moments, the damage that should have taken weeks to heal had almost completely vanished.

Devara’s eyes narrowed.

"So you regenerate."

The Yali lifted its head.

Its eyes were no longer indifferent.

They were focused entirely upon Devara.

The beast released another enormous roar.

Devara smiled faintly as he tightened his grip on Pinakodanda.

"Good."

He leaned forward slightly.

"Then I don’t have to worry about accidentally ending this too quickly."

The golden stallion beneath him gave a powerful neigh.

The Yali lowered its body.

Its claws dug into the ground.

Devara immediately recognized the change in its posture.

The creature was no longer walking toward them.

It was preparing to charge.

Devara raised Pinakodanda again.

"Come on, then."

The Yali exploded forward.

The golden stallion charged to meet it.

And the distance between predator and rider began disappearing rapidly.

The Yali’s entire demeanor had changed.

Only moments earlier, it had regarded Devara with the detached curiosity of a predator studying something unfamiliar.

Now there was nothing casual in its expression.

Its enormous eyes were fixed upon Devara with unmistakable murderous intent.

Devara had hurt it.

The memory of the lightning strike had clearly enraged the beast.

The Yali suddenly threw its head upward and released a tremendous roar.

ROOOOOOOAR!

The force of the sound itself seemed to become a storm.

A violent gust exploded outward from the creature, sending dust, leaves and broken branches flying across the battlefield.

Several nearby trees bent violently, while a few weaker ones were uprooted completely and hurled away.

Devara’s golden stallion staggered for a moment beneath the force of the roar.

Devara immediately lowered his body and tightened his grip on the mane.

"Steady!"

The stallion recovered its footing.

But Devara’s attention was already fixed upon the Yali.

Something was happening inside its mouth.

A strange light had begun gathering there.

At first it was only a faint glow between its teeth.

Then it became brighter.

And brighter.

The light expanded inside the Yali’s enormous jaws, filling its mouth with an intense radiance that made the surrounding air shimmer from the heat.

Devara’s instincts screamed at him.

’Danger.’

This was not another ordinary attack.

He did not wait to find out what it was.

His hand immediately shifted along the golden stallion’s mane.

"Move!"

The stallion understood.

It suddenly veered sharply to the side.

The Yali’s head followed them.

Devara’s eyes widened.

"Keep moving!"

The golden horse accelerated.

Then the Yali opened its jaws completely.

A colossal stream of fire erupted from its mouth.

FWOOM!

The flames swept across the battlefield like a blazing river.

Devara and the golden stallion had already moved away from the direction of the attack, but even from a distance the heat struck them with tremendous force.

The fire tore through everything in its path.

Trees disappeared instantly.

Grass was reduced to ash.

Large rocks cracked and shattered beneath the heat.

The golden soil itself began glowing red where the flames passed over it.

For several meters, nothing remained untouched.

Devara looked over his shoulder as the inferno continued roaring behind them.

His expression became grim.

"That would have killed us."

The golden stallion continued running, its hooves pounding against the ground.

Devara looked back toward the Yali.

The beast slowly lowered its head after releasing the devastating breath, smoke curling from between its teeth.

Its eyes found Devara once again.

The creature was angry.

Very angry.

Devara tightened his grip on Pinakodanda.

"All right."

His green eyes hardened.

"I understand now."

The Yali had shown him its strength.

And Devara had no intention of underestimating it again.
