The duel of archery had long since surpassed the limits of what ordinary warriors could comprehend.
Every exchange between Devaratha and Nishithanetra shook the heavens themselves, their Astras illuminating the darkening sky in countless colors before colliding with explosions powerful enough to shake the forests surrounding Malikavana.
Neither warrior had taken a single unnecessary step since the battle had begun.
Instead, they remained upon their respective chariots, allowing their mastery over the bow to decide the outcome.
Nishithanetra’s fingers never stopped moving.
Arrow after arrow flew from his bow, each one carrying a different Astra born from centuries of relentless training.
One transformed into countless black serpents that sought to devour Devaratha’s chariot.
Before they could even descend,
Devaratha answered with a radiant Garuda Astra, whose divine eagle shattered every serpent into wisps of dark Yogic energy.
A moment later,
Nishithanetra responded with an Astra that summoned a storm of violet lightning, only for Devaratha’s own celestial lightning to meet it head-on, the collision bathing half the battlefield in blinding light.
Wind, fire, darkness, ice, poison, illusion... every divine technique Nishithanetra unleashed was met with another of equal or greater refinement.
The Rakshasa General’s expression gradually hardened.
He had entered the battle believing that sooner or later he would force Devaratha into making a mistake.
Instead...
It was the King of Trivenivrata who continued dictating the pace of the battle.
No matter how deceptive the angle.
No matter how complex the Astra.
No matter how quickly Nishithanetra chained one divine technique after another...
Every single attack was intercepted before it could travel even halfway toward its destination.
It felt as though Devaratha already knew what Astra he intended to release before the string even left his fingers.
The heavens roared once again as another pair of Astras annihilated each other in a magnificent explosion.
For several moments, both warriors simply continued firing, neither allowing the other even the slightest opening.
Then...
The battlefield trembled.
It wasn’t the result of another clash.
This vibration was far heavier.
Far older.
Even the divine saber tooth tigers pulling the Vajravyaghra Rath let out uneasy growl as the ground beneath their paws shook.
Devaratha instinctively lifted his gaze toward the distant battlefield.
"...."
Far beyond the clouds of dust...
A colossal golden figure towered over the horizon.
Hanuman.
The immortal Vanara had assumed his gigantic form.
Even from several battlefields away, his divine body resembled a mountain that had suddenly risen from the earth itself.
Devaratha’s eyes narrowed immediately.
Hanuman never revealed that form against ordinary enemies.
Only a foe worthy of absolute strength could force him to do so.
"One of Pushpasura’s Twelve Generals..."
His grip around the Pinakodanda tightened.
"...or Pushpasura himself."
He exhaled slowly.
"I cannot waste any more time."
His attention returned entirely to Nishithanetra.
"This ends now."
For the first time since the duel had begun, Devaratha drew the string of the Pinakodanda without immediately releasing it.
Instead, an unfamiliar Yogic energy began gathering around the arrow.
Unlike the brilliant golden radiance that usually surrounded his Astras, this energy possessed a gentle pink glow.
It spiraled around the shaft in graceful circles before blooming outward like the petals of a divine flower opening beneath the morning sun.
One petal became ten.
Ten became a hundred.
A hundred became a thousand.
Soon the arrow itself had completely disappeared beneath an endless vortex of shimmering pink petals, every one of them as delicate as a rose yet carrying an edge sharper than any celestial blade ever forged.
The petals danced around the arrow with breathtaking elegance.
Watching them, one would mistake the Astra for a heavenly blessing.
Only a master of warfare could sense the terrifying destruction hidden within its beauty.
Devaratha’s calm voice echoed across the battlefield.
"Sahasra-Rajani-Rosa Astra."
The Astra of the Thousand Celestial Rose Petals.
The moment his fingers released the string, the sky blossomed.
The arrow vanished from sight.
In its place surged an ocean of a thousand radiant rose petals, twisting gracefully through the air as though carried by a gentle breeze.
Yet each petal possessed a will of its own, altering its path independently while together forming an unstoppable storm of divine blades.
Nishithanetra’s eyes widened in shock.
"...."
Without hesitation, he drew another arrow.
Dark Yogic energy erupted around it before taking the shape of one of his most destructive Astras.
"Tear it apart!"
The Rakshasa General released the string.
The black Astra rushed toward the approaching storm.
The collision came an instant later.
Except...
It wasn’t a collision.
The thousand petals simply separated.
Like water flowing around a stone, they gracefully avoided the incoming Astra before converging upon it from every direction.
Hundreds of petals sliced into the projectile simultaneously.
The Astra shuddered.
Cracks spread across its surface.
Then...
It exploded into nothingness.
Not a single petal had been destroyed.
The celestial storm continued advancing as though nothing had stood before it.
Nishithanetra’s heart skipped a beat.
"What...?"
Realizing there was no longer enough time to launch another counterattack, he immediately slammed the lower end of his bow against the floor of the chariot.
Dark Yogic energy erupted around him.
A massive translucent barrier enveloped both him and the chariot.
The first wave of petals struck.
Thousands of metallic chimes echoed together.
The shield held.
For a heartbeat. Then another.
Cracks slowly spread across its surface.
The second wave arrived before the first had even finished striking.
Then the third. The fourth.
The petals attacked endlessly, each one no stronger than an ordinary Astra fragment, yet together they became a relentless storm that refused to cease.
Nishithanetra poured more and more Yogic energy into the barrier.
Veins bulged across his arms.
His breathing became heavier.
The shield trembled violently beneath the overwhelming assault.
Finally...
With a deafening crack...
The barrier shattered.
The remaining petals surged forward without mercy.
Yet instead of immediately seeking his life...
They targeted the very thing that had made Nishithanetra feared throughout countless wars.
His bow.
Hundreds of petals struck it simultaneously.
Ancient bow that had survived centuries of battle finally reached its limit.
A loud crack echoed through the battlefield.
Then another.
Then dozens more.
The bow shattered into countless fragments, scattering across the floor of the chariot before becoming nothing more than useless splinters.
Nishithanetra stared in disbelief.
His greatest companion...
Destroyed.
Before he could recover from the shock, the remaining petals swept across his body.
"...."
They sliced through his armor with terrifying precision, carving deep wounds across his shoulders, chest, arms and legs.
Blood burst from every cut, spraying across the wooden platform beneath him.
The assault lasted only a few seconds.
When the final petal disappeared into the evening wind...
Nishithanetra could no longer remain standing.
His legs buckled.
He dropped onto one knee.
Blood dripped steadily from his body.
His breathing had become ragged.
-HUFF! -HUFF!
"...."
With trembling effort, he slowly raised his half-closed eye.
Standing atop the Vajravyaghra Rath...
Devaratha had already drawn another arrow.
This time, brilliant flames burned around its tip, their golden fire illuminating his calm face beneath the crimson evening sky.
There was no hatred within his eyes.
Only respect.
"You fought with honor,"
Devaratha said, his voice carrying clearly across the now silent battlefield.
"Very few warriors have forced me to answer every one of their Astras. You stood before me without retreating even once. Die proudly, Nishithanetra. You are a worthy warrior who has earned my respect."
Nishithanetra smiled faintly.
Not because he expected to survive...
But because the greatest acknowledgment a warrior could receive was respect from the one who defeated him.
Devaratha slowly released the string.
The flaming Astra shot forward like a fragment of the setting sun, its blazing trail scorching the air behind it.
Nishithanetra watched it approach.
His bow was gone.
His body refused to move.
There was nothing left to do except accept the end.
The Astra closed the remaining distance...
Twenty meters... Ten... Five...
Then...
BOOOOOOM!!
The earth beneath the chariot exploded.
A gigantic vine burst violently from the ground, thicker than the trunk of an ancient banyan tree.
Before Nishithanetra could even react, it coiled tightly around his waist and yanked him sideways with tremendous force.
"...."
The flaming Astra missed him by less than a hand’s breadth.
Instead...
It struck the abandoned chariot.
A blinding pillar of fire erupted into the heavens.
The explosion swallowed everything within several dozen meters, reducing the massive chariot, its wheels, the horses and every remaining fragment into nothingness.
The shockwave flattened the surrounding earth and sent burning debris flying across the battlefield before the inferno finally subsided.
When the flames disappeared...
Only a vast smoking crater remained.
Standing atop the Vajravyaghra Rath, Devaratha lowered the Pinakodanda slightly, his eyes narrowing as they settled upon the enormous vine that had stolen his victory at the final moment.
"...."
His expression remained calm.
But his mind had already reached a conclusion.
"Did another one of Pushpasura’s Generals..."
he murmured quietly.
"...has entered the battlefield. Or Pushpasura himself..."
The moment Devaratha’s words left his lips, the battlefield fell into an uneasy silence.
His sharp gaze remained fixed upon the enormous vine that had erupted from beneath the earth.
It was unlike any ordinary plant. Its surface was covered in dark crimson veins that pulsed rhythmically, as though blood itself flowed through its body instead of sap.
Every pulse released an oppressive aura that caused even the surrounding warriors to instinctively step backward.
The vine tightened around Nishithanetra’s battered body, lifting him effortlessly into the air.
Then...
The ground split apart once more.
A massive hand emerged from the opening.
Its skin was charcoal black, covered with countless crimson markings that glowed like molten lava beneath cracked stone.
Thick claws dug into the earth as the hand pulled itself upward.
A second hand followed.
The battlefield trembled.
Slowly...
A horned head emerged from beneath the ground, followed by broad shoulders and an enormous torso wrapped in dark armor that seemed to have grown from his own flesh.
The oppressive aura pouring from the figure spread across Malikavana like an invisible tidal wave, pressing down upon every living being unfortunate enough to stand nearby.
There was no need for introductions.
No one could mistake him.
Pushpasura.
The Lord of the Rakshasas army before him had arrived.
He had not crossed the battlefield like an ordinary commander.
Instead, after sensing Devaratha’s location through his earlier method, he had traveled beneath the earth itself,
Using the vast network of corrupted roots under Malikavana to move unseen until he reached the very heart of the battlefield.
His crimson eyes immediately fell upon the wounded Nishithanetra dangling helplessly from the vine.
"...."
For a brief moment...
The Rakshasa General looked toward his lord.
There was neither shame nor regret in his eyes.
Only the silent hope that he had fulfilled his duty.
Pushpasura looked back at him.
Not with concern. Not with gratitude.
But with complete contempt.
His gaze was so cold that it made the surrounding Rakshasas lower their heads.
"Tch."
The sound escaped his lips with obvious disgust.
"You allowed yourself to be reduced to this pathetic state..."
His voice carried no anger. Only disappointment.
"...and you call yourself one of my Twelve Generals?"
Nishithanetra lowered his head.
Blood continued dripping from his wounds.
He did not offer excuses.
He did not beg for forgiveness.
He simply remained silent.
Pushpasura’s expression twisted slightly, as though merely looking at him had become unpleasant.
"Pathetic."
"I expected a warrior..."
He looked Nishithanetra up and down before letting out a cold snort.
"Instead I find broken refuse."
His eyes held no trace of appreciation for the Rakshasa who had risked his life in pursuit of his master’s objective.
To Pushpasura...
A defeated subordinate possessed no value.
He looked at Nishithanetra as one might look at dirt clinging to the sole of a boot.
Without another word, his gaze shifted away.
The wounded general no longer existed in his eyes.
Instead...
His attention settled upon the warrior standing several hundred feet away.
Devaratha.
The King of Trivenivrata remained atop the Vajravyaghra Rath, his posture as calm as ever despite the arrival of the Pushpasura.
The Pinakodanda rested comfortably in his hand, while his dress swayed gently in the evening breeze created by the fading explosions.
For several long moments...
Neither of them spoke.
"...."
"...."
It was the divine beasts pulling Devaratha’s chariot that broke the silence.
The four celestial saber-toothed tigers slowly stepped forward as one.
Their golden eyes locked onto Pushpasura.
Their muscles tensed.
Then, together...
They threw back their enormous heads and unleashed thunderous roars.
ROOOOOOOOAAAAARRRRR!!
The sound rolled across Malikavana like a divine proclamation.
The surrounding trees shook violently.
Dust rose from the ground.
Even the Rakshasa soldiers nearest Pushpasura instinctively stumbled backward, their faces paling as the majestic beasts bared fangs capable of tearing through mountains.
Unlike ordinary animals...
The celestial tigers did not fear the overwhelming aura radiating from the Pushpasura.
If anything...
Their roars carried unmistakable challenge.
Pushpasura’s crimson eyes narrowed slightly as they rested upon the four divine beasts.
A faint smile slowly spread across his face.
"Interesting..."
he murmured.
"As expectede legendary celestial predators."
The tigers answered with another deafening roar, their claws digging deep into the earth as golden divine energy rippled across their bodies.
Pushpasura showed no intention of retreating.
Instead, he slowly folded his arms across his chest, his towering figure standing like an immovable mountain before Devaratha.
At last...
His gaze met Devaratha’s.
Two beings whose very presence could alter the fate of kingdoms.
The battlefield seemed to hold its breath.
Every soldier, whether human or Rakshasa who were near by, understood that the true confrontation they had feared since the war began...
...had finally arrived.
