My Childhood Friend Turned Yandere in the Apocalypse

Chapter 64: Ch 64: Task 3 and a new familiar

’The rodent infestation lasted for 12 hours. But those felt like the longest 12 hours of his life. We had a lot of losses and food supplies started to run short. People started to blame the young leader of the settlement.

Honestly, there was little the young master could do to prevent something like this from happening. But people often did not see the helplessness of the people in power.

They needed someone to blame and the young master was the perfect bait.

I do feel sorry for him and Shelly is sad as well. But this is an opportunity I cannot let pass. I need to fan the flames of rebellion further. Only then will these people listen to me and agree to follow me.’

Rin recalled the words from the original novel about the third task. The MC had joined Rin’s settlement after this task when the mood was at its lowest. And he had become a ray of hope for the helpless people here.

Since he was a returnee, he knew the location of grain stocks that were only going to be explored in the future. He had shared this knowledge and gained a lot of support from the people.

Unfortunately, such a strategy would not work again.

Rin would not allow things to run out of control.

"Meow"

Something soft brushed against Rin’s legs and he looked down to see the cat that his settlement had adopted. He had forgotten about it until now.

The cat was likely begging for treats, rubbing against him and Rin suddenly had an idea.

"Hey, little one. Where are you going?"

Rin had no intention of throwing an innocent animal into a death pit. But he had a feeling this feline was not as ordinary as everyone thought.

The cat looked startled but then nodded slowly, understanding that Rin was not going to harm it. It seemed to understand Rin well which further cemented Rin’s suspicions about this cat.

"Meow"

The cat blinked at Rin before the system suddenly chimed in.

[User, I looked away for one second and you found a pet? Being too popular is not a good thing. Luckily, this one is a male so the chances of an accident happening are low.]

[User, please remember the chances of an accident happening are low, but they are never zero.]

The system warned Rin.

"Meow"

The cat called out again and a prompt appeared on Rin’s screen.

[Would you like to record ’Myth’ as your familiar? Qualifications for Tamer will open]

The only familiar Rin had at this point was Teressa. Having another one would likely not change anything.

So Rin accepted the request.

[Special Trait: Tamer is available. Current progress ⅔]

[Companion Myth’s profile is available.]

[Companion Name: Myth (lvl10)

Species name: ???

HP: 2500/2500

Special Skills: Species submission. Lightning strike.

Special Traits: Loyalty (can boost party member’s skills by 10%), Fear of the unknown (can make lower monsters flinch and keep away]

"Huh? Why are your stats so good? How did you even level up this much? Also, you are not a cat?"

The species was left as ??? which meant that the system could not tell Rin what this car-like monster was. But what Rin did know was that it was too high-leveled.

No wonder it had been able to make it all the way to the mansion without getting hurt.

[Tsk, the system keeps warning the user not to cause trouble for himself, but the user never listens to the system’s warning.]

[User, tell me honestly - Are you amasochist? Should I arrange special quests pertaining to your interest? The system is not well-versed in such needs, but it can manage-]

"Please, stop sprouting nonsense. You’re going to make my stress spike."

[Current exhaustion level: 25%]

Thankfully, his fatigue was still manageable. He had kept it under control ever since he collapsed due to extreme use of his abilities.

"Meow?"

Myth reminded Rin of its presence for the third time. It was chewing on Rin’s pants and once it had Rin’s attention, it waited patiently for Rin’s command.

"Alright, I am going to give you your next task. There will be a rodent infestation soon. I need you to remain near the storage house and drive as many away as you can."

The cat-hybrid nodded and its tail folded in a salute before Myth took off. Rin watched it for a moment before he called for a meeting to explain how to get through the next task.

Rin had the data of everyone in his sanctuary sorted out already. So it was not hard to separate them into offensive type hunters and defensive type hunters. Many of them had scouting skills and he had a separate pile for them.

Those in charge gathered quickly to hear what Rin had to say to them.

"As you all know, the next task is a rodent infestation. I want everyone with a sensory skill to pair up with another and go after these monsters near our fields and storage. Those who do not have a partner can patrol the outside and cast protective skills on the crops."

Rin stressed the importance of the crops. Many people nodded, not questioning his decision. But the system had a lot to say.

[Hmm, user, you sure are heartless. You keep going on about crops this and crops that. What about human life? Does that mean nothing to you?]

The system taunted Rin, but it did have a point. Rin was not trying to come across as someone who only cared about results and nothing about human life.

"Your first priority should be to make sure no one dies. We have two medical hunters on staff now, so immediately get yourself treated if you are hurt. Don’t let your wounds fester."

Rin stressed these words and everyone nodded to show that they understood his words.

Most people would likely not follow his advice to look after themselves. But they were adults. It was Rin’s obligation to show that he cared.

"We’ll go relay your orders."

Rin noticed Amelia fidgeting nervously and even Albus kept an eye on the executives. Albus’s eyes darkened slightly when he looked at the people from ENC who had wronged him in his past life.

Their situation was complicated and Rin was not even sure how he could interfere—or whether he should. After all this was a personal matter.

’Still, I spent so much time and effort on those people from ENC. I cannot let it all go to waste.’

So even if it was not Rin’s place, he decided to speak up.

"I don’t care what most of you do in your free time, but do consider what your actions could mean for this settlement. You are not only responsible for your own life."

Albus gritted his teeth and settled down after that. Rin’s threat had gotten through so he was sure he wouldn’t lose his people at Albus’s hands...at least this time.
