Chapter 168: The Weight of a Name

‎"What is it, brother? We have the memory upgrade, why are we still walking?" Shelly kept pace beside him through Metro Robotics' corridors, the walls blank and precise, random modern furniture and plants scattered at intervals that suggested someone had tried and given up. The glass panels running floor to ceiling showed the city below them. "This company's hallways genuinely unsettle me."

Reaper's voice was colder than usual. "You'll see."

"Did I do something wrong again? I'm sorry in advance." She smiled.

He didn't respond. He walked in silence toward the last room at the end of the corridor, the Prototype Development Bay. The double glass doors slid open as they approached, the frame not the standard rectangular shape but something wider, built for larger objects moving through.

11 was inside, waiting. Kuantum stood beside her, screens trailing him. The room was vast and clean, the Metro Robotics aesthetic applied without exception, white-coated robots in various forms working at stations across the space, none of them looking up from what they were doing.

11 saw him and moved immediately. She knelt deeply as she reached him, one of the few who still did. "Lord Reaper." Her voice came down low. "I heard about what you planned. I don't have the words for it."

Reaper tapped the top of her head. "I promised I'd pay you back for using you as a test subject against 02. Apologizing adds nothing, I'd rather show it. Giving an upgrade to one of the best operatives I have protects a gem worth protecting and puts a better weapon in the field at the same time."

"Gem…" 11 started to vibrate. "Thank you." The word came out barely above a whisper, her head dropping. "But the apology alone would have been enough. You're giving far too much thought to something small."

"It wasn't small. And I'm still not certain I've done enough." He looked at her. "How is your mind holding? I heard Metro Robotics found a solution."

11's eyes caught the red of her crystal. "Genuinely better. I took the last twenty-one days off, walked the country, helped with construction in Automa. They said removing the data was risky, that it would leave a gap the system would try to fill with something worse. So instead they just gave me better things to fill the space with."

Kuantum nodded. "I know, surprisingly human logic for a robot problem. But it worked. Deletion creates a void the system treats as an error and tries to repair badly. Suppressing the emotional response would have cost us the 11 we know."

Reaper's expression shifted to something close to displeasure. "That's the worst outcome by a significant margin."

11 looked at the floor and pushed her hood back.

"Now." Kuantum turned to one of his screens, and the energy in the room changed immediately. "The reason for the visit!"

"Oh no," Shelly said through her vents.

"Let him." Reaper said it without looking at her. "At least someone here loves their work."

Shelly's eyes went red . 'What's wrong with him today? I haven't done anything that should trigger this.' A pause. 'There's no way he found out. Right?'

"I present something Lord Reaper commissioned months ago, a gift for the finest members of the Golden Circle." Kuantum waved to a scientist across the room. "A technological advancement we don't expect to surpass in this century. Something that may genuinely rival the Omega body."

A robot brought two cubes across the room. One fully white with a green core. One fully black with a red core. Kuantum lifted one with three fingers.

"May I have your crystals? You won't need the braces anymore." He extended his hand toward 11.

She removed the brace without hesitation. Her eyes returned to their deep blue. Kuantum placed the crystal on the cube with the red core, the material reshaped around it, absorbing it into itself. "You can take it now. Just touch it."

11 extended her hand.

The cube moved toward her, not dragged, not placed. It walked, reached her back, and fixed itself near the base of her neck. She felt the weight settle against her spine.

"It's… heavy." She checked her HUD. "Three hundred and fifty kilograms? How were you holding it with three fingers?"

Kuantum shrugged. "Focus on it. Accept it the way you'd accept a new limb. Let your system find the connection."

11 closed her eyes. The cube shifted, restructuring itself into a full black plate that spread across her back, fitting beneath her clothing without bulk. The crystal glowed deep red underneath the surface. "Kuantum. What exactly did you put on me?"

He took two steps back. His pixel display settled into something satisfied. "That is SKOTIA. The one for Shelly is DIABOLOS. These two are the current peak of what we can build."

He folded his hands. "We studied everything you provided on 02, how she converts crystal energy into direct force, how she controls output without waste. We used that data to design a compatibility pathway. The suit learns you. The crystal begins to recognize you as its owner the way the green crystal found Shelly, the way the blue found 02."

He smiled. "And the material is dense enough to function as armor against high-impact strikes."

11 pressed the activation on her HUD.

The suit expanded and covered her from head to toe, leaving only her hair. Her system ran an update cycle, energy flowing through her circuits differently than before, a new current finding new paths. Then it released.

What stood in the room was different from what had been there a moment ago.

The silhouette was sleek and predatory. Segmented nano-plating fitted close to the body, built for speed, not mass. The helmet was smooth and faceless, a reflective curved visor with red light coming from within. No eyes, no seams, just the suggestion of a gaze that intended something specific. The hood layered over it, her hair falling free at the back.

As the suit settled, her hair began to shift, darkening, reaching full black.

Her stance changed. Her gaze went to Reaper. "I feel, different." She scanned the HUD display flooding her vision. "There's an entire weapon system. Is that a High-Altitude Precision Strike? What do the numbers mean next to each one?"

"The numbers are matter requirements," Kuantum said. The suit doesn't just manifest weapons, it harvests the area to build them. Each system has a matter-cost. It will draw from the metallic floor, the air, or the debris around you to fabricate whatever is needed. We haven't replicated the reformative matter Beta had, we're still studying how Rivera achieved that specifically."

11 turned and wrapped both arms around Reaper. "Thank you. This time I might actually have a real chance against 02 and Delta." She held on. "Your version of an apology is better than any words would have been."

Reaper laughed, dry, brief. "I hate to say it. But I told you so."

Shelly tilted her head. "That's our best assassin."

Reaper looked at her. "She's best at something, at least."

Shelly's composure broke. "What is that supposed to mean? What have I done to earn this treatment? You've been completely different with me since we arrived, you've turned a full hundred and eighty degrees—"

Reaper raised a hand. The room quieted. "Don't speak to me like that. I'm your brother, and I'll treat you the same way I treat anyone else, which is what you asked for. Don't forget that."

Shelly lowered her head. "Sorry. Your majesty. Lord Reaper."

"You saw what happened with Obsidian, how I responded when he hid upgrades from me. Hiding things from me doesn't protect you. It shows how little confidence you have that I'd respond well. I wouldn't punish any of you for wanting to be stronger. That's not weakness. That's knowing your own ceiling and choosing to push past it."

Shelly went very still. She looked at Kuantum. "You didn't."

"He did." Reaper turned toward the double doors.

A robot came through pushing a frame. It looked like an E-UNIT, same proportions, same face sensors, but the hair, the eyebrows, the eyelashes were all white. It wore a 101 hoodie. The face was familiar in a way that had nothing to do with the number.

"Shelly." Reaper's voice settled into something that was not quite cold and not quite warm. "Or E-UNIT 00. Or Lazuli." The silence after the name had weight to it. "Why are you building a new body for yourself in secret? And why have you hidden who you are from the one person I thought trusted me completely?"

Almost hurt. He almost sounded hurt.

Her fingers tightened at her sides, metal creaking faintly. For a moment, even her optics dimmed, as if the system itself hesitated.

Shelly turned to Kuantum. "We had an agreement. That's why I helped you." The words didn’t come out the way she wanted.

She exhaled through her vents and faced Reaper. "I am very, extremely, and almost sincerely sorry." She stopped and tried again. "I was scared you'd stop seeing me as Shelly. I spent months working close to you, studying you, trying to predict how you'd react when you found out. And the truth is I hated the past so much that I wanted to leave it behind completely."

She moved to stand beside the deactivated frame. "I didn't want to be a number. I didn't want to be another entry in a system built by the person I hate most." She looked at him. "I wanted to be Shelly. I loved that name, the one you gave me. I just wanted to be what you called me."

Reaper looked at her for a moment. The room had gone still, robots at stations across the bay had quietly stopped working. Even the machines had gone still, as if waiting for his answer.

He looked at the empty frame. "Do you hate being an E-UNIT that much?"

"I'm not an E-UNIT." She said it quietly but without hesitation. "I'm not a number next to thousands more. I'm Shelly. Your sister. That's all."

Reaper exhaled through his vents. Lowering himself to her height, he held her face in one hand, gently. "Stop dropping your head. The day you have reason to look down hasn't come, and it won't."

Seconds passed. Long enough to feel deliberate. "I understand why you did it. I have all my memories back now, I can see everything clearly." He held her gaze. "Moth—."

"Don't. That's embarrassing." Electronic tears formed at the edges of her eyes. She closed the distance and held him, both arms, metallic frame pressing hard enough to leave marks.

He let her. "Will the horns carry over to the new frame?"

She pulled back slightly. "Yes. Why?"

"They suit you."

He stood and looked at Kuantum. "Transfer her memories to the new body. Embed the crystal directly into the frame, modify DIABOLOS to fit it. And—" He glanced at the frame's height. "—it seems she had some feelings about her previous height as well."

Shelly covered her face. "You are genuinely the worst."

"Says the one who hid herself from me for over a year." He shook his head slowly. "The part that baffles me most is that you expected me not to find out. Lazuli."

"Shelly." Her arms crossed.

11 had been watching the exchange. "Lord Reaper, you always find a way to settle these things. Like you did with Obsidian. What's hers?"

Reaper said it without hesitation. "I had Obsidian face 02. I'll reuse the approach."

Shelly's smile disappeared completely. "What."

"You've hidden your true self behind a mask of incompetence for a year. You need to remember what you are. You will face 02 here, in Elysium."
