Chapter 83: Sending the princess running.
All the guards became nervous when Sienna told them to let the princess into the compound. The older trio of grandma Byra, Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Abernathy were already shaking. After the way the princess had been treated when she last passed by, this was definitely not a friendly visit.
"Sienna, maybe you should go into the house." Her mother suggested.
"And we should lock the windows." Grandma Byra said.
Soren came running over, screaming Sienna’s name. "Sis, sis, she wants the queen bee."
Sienna raised a brow. "My queen bee? As in my Honey Thunder--the one that produces honey which gives me strength and joy."
Soren nodded. "She says it belongs to her by royal right."
Sienna smirked. "Royal right? More like royal theft." She stepped out of the yard, careful not to trample on the seeds she had planted.
Moments later, Princess Evira swept into the front courtyard with her entourage of overdressed guards. The number was two times more than that of the day before. The sixteen year old was draped in battle armor so bright that it could blind a comet. Her chin was tilted at an angle that suggested she’d practiced disdain in the mirror.
Evira waved her hand dismissively, "I see that you came out to greet me today. I approve." She declared, her voice dripping with entitlement. "Now let’s not waste time, I have returned to claim what is mine. Hand over the queen bee."
Sienna folded her arms. "Princess, you must be sleep walking. Otherwise, how can you bravely walk over and demand for my bee? The bee that only listens to me? The one that stings on my command? The one I risked my life to bring back?"
The princess sniffed. "It is a royal relative. It belongs in the palace, not in your.....rustic hive."
Sienna tilted her head, feigning though. "Rustic? Funny, I personally think that it is functional. You know the words function and what it means, right?"
The princess bristled. "You mock me."
Sienna smiled sweetly. "Not at all. I admire your confidence. It takes real courage to demand a bee when you have never planted a flower in your life."
Evira’s guards shifted uneasily. It sounded like Sienna was making threats. Evira stamped her foot. "I will tell my brother and make you regret this insolence!"
Sienna walked closer to the teenager, lowering her voice to a conspiratorial whisper, "Tell me, bratty Princess...do you even know the role of a queen bee in a hive?"
The girl faltered. "She is the queen so she does queen things, Isn’t it to rule?"
Sienna chuckled, "Close. It works. Constantly. Lays eggs, keeps order, ensures survival. Being a queen is not just sitting on a throne and giving little girls rides. If you think I am lying, then go ahead. Be my guest. But I warn you--bees don’t bow to beast men or royalty."
The princess flushed crimson. "You dare--"
Sienna cut her off with a sly grin. "I dare everything. And I am warning you, Honey Thunder does not have a very good temper. If you take her, the swarm will follow."
As if on cue, Honey Thunder buzzed from her hive, a sound that dominated the air space above them. Princess Evira shrieked, stumbling backward. Her guards tried to be brave but the sound scared them. Queen bee venom could kill, even the strongest beast man.
"Princess, maybe we should go." One suggested.
Sienna raised her voice just enough for the crowd to hear. "Careful, Princess. Bees don’t care about titles. They care about respect and you have showed me none so the queen bee is going to vent her anger on you. A little venom will make you ugly for the rest of your life."
Princess Evira gasped, her eyes widened in horror. She covered her face with her hands, turned and fled. Tears were streaking her cheeks, her battle banners flapping in retreat. Behind her, the swarm surged, chasing the princess and her guards down the path in a chaotic procession of buzzing justice.
Mrs. Abernathy walked to Sienna, and crossed her arms. "Why must you make an enemy of her?"
"You mean I should have allowed her to take my queen bee?" Sienna asked sharply.
The governess folded her lips. "That is not what I mean. I just think there are other ways the situation could have been handled. Believe me, this will not be the last time we hear from Princess Evira."
Sienna scoffed. "She is a child that only a few people dared to say no to before. Like Eli, what she needs to do is learn some good manners. If she had come and politely asked for a ride, I would have asked Honey Thunder to give her one. But instead, she came with demands, acting as if I owed her something---"
HAHAHA---The sharp sound of Soren’s laughter cut Sienna off. "Did you hear what she said? She called Honey Thunder a royal relative? Since when were bees and lion beast men related?"
Someone chuckled.
Grandma Byra waved her hands. "Okay, the show is over. We all have work to do so, disperse."
The servants and guards left, but Geo didn’t. He came up behind Sienna and said with a smirk, "You didn’t even throw anything this time."
Sienna smirked. "Why should I lift a finger to deal with a sixteen year old? In fact, if the story about our feud comes out, I will be painted as the bully. I figured the bees would do all the talking since she came for them. Honey Thunder is better at mockery than I am." The queen bee had refused to give the beast King and Queen a ride. How could it bow to a princess?
Honey Thunder came over and landed next to Sienna. She stroked the bee’s wings gently. "Well done, Your Majesty," she whispered. "You have defended your independence and throne without a single sting."
The bee buzzed in response, as though taking pride in commanding her swarm to send a group if invaders running.
And somewhere on the beach, aunt Numia was about to learn the hard way, that becoming a royal relative was far harder than a princess demanding for a bee.
