Chapter 110 - 103: Walking Corpse 2
After casually dispatching two more Fusion Monsters that had crawled out from the dark corners of the parking garage, Lin Ye confirmed there were no clues underground and had to turn back the way he came.
He returned to the directory sign in front of the outpatient building.
The outpatient building was ten stories tall, all of which housed various department offices.
Lin Ye didn’t linger. He crossed the lobby and pushed open the heavy glass doors leading to the plaza behind the building.
A far more intense wave of Source Crystal radiation and the stench of decay washed over him.
The sight before him made his breath catch in his throat.
It was a massive, circular plaza. It might have once been adorned with lush vegetation and flowers, but now, only dead trees and cracked paving stones remained.
And scattered across the plaza were wandering figures.
Those figures were all Fusion Monsters, identical to the ones he had killed earlier!
They were like lost, soulless ghosts, pacing day after day, year after year, in this cage surrounded by buildings.
Lin Ye gave a quick scan, and his heart sank.
There were at least two or three hundred Fusion Monsters here!
If their origins were the same as the Shi Lei and Shi Hao brothers—transformed from living humans...
Then just how many years had this mysterious organization, hidden behind the ruined city, been in existence?
Lin Ye’s gaze swept past the plaza, which looked like a parade of demons, and settled on the inpatient building at the far end.
His eyes, like two ice-quenched daggers, slowly swept across the demonic parade before him.
He didn’t act rashly.
There were too many Fusion Monsters in the plaza. If he got surrounded, even someone like him wouldn’t come out unscathed.
He needed a path.
A route where the monsters were thinnest, one where triggering a fight was least likely to cause a chain reaction.
Lin Ye’s gaze darted between the shadows of buildings and the wreckage of abandoned vehicles, his Spiritual Power spreading out like an invisible net.
He observed and sensed the strength of each monster’s aura and its movement patterns, rapidly constructing a safe path in his mind.
「Ten minutes later.」
Like a wisp of smoke, Lin Ye’s figure flashed out from a shadow-shrouded corner. The tip of the alloy spear in his hand dripped with thick, black blood.
[You have killed a Level 16 Fusion Monster (Elite)]
[Affected by the Five Qi Guiding Formulas, your experience multiplier has been set to 150%. You have gained 78 experience points!]
[Your level has increased to Level 18!]
Lin Ye crossed the plaza and reached the entrance of the general inpatient building at the far end.
On the wall of the first-floor lobby hung a dust-covered floor plan directory.
Lin Ye’s eyes swept over it quickly, finally settling on an area in the left wing, three floors underground.
The Body Viewing Area.
If there was any place in a hospital perfect for shady, secret activities, the morgue was undoubtedly the top choice.
「A little over ten minutes later.」
Lin Ye appeared in a corridor on the third basement level.
The main structure of the third basement level consisted of five enormous morgues arranged side by side, along with a small viewing hall for farewell ceremonies.
The moment he stepped into the corridor, a bone-chilling cold washed over him, completely different from the decaying silence of the surface.
The air here was cold and dry, carrying a unique smell—a mixture of formalin and disinfectant.
Lin Ye walked up to the metal door of the first morgue.
He was about to push it open when his ears twitched.
THUD... THUD...
A muffled, highly rhythmic knocking sound came from behind the closed door.
The sound wasn’t loud, but in the dead silence, it was enough to make one’s scalp tingle.
Lin Ye froze.
Even though this was the Gao Wu Realm, he had never heard any rumors about ghosts or supernatural entities.
’Ghosts are just things you use to scare yourself.’
’Fear always comes from a lack of firepower, and I have plenty of that right now!’
Lin Ye’s eyes narrowed. Without further hesitation, he shoved the heavy metal door open.
Then, with a flick of his wrist, he took a portable cold-light source from his bag.
Inside, in the enormous mortuary, two rows of refrigerated lockers were neatly arranged, their metal surfaces glinting coldly under the light in his hand.
The "THUD THUD" sound was still going.
Lin Ye followed the sound to its source.
It was a refrigerated locker in the corner. The knocking sound was coming from within its sealed drawer.
An ordinary person stumbling upon this scene would have probably been scared out of their wits.
Although Lin Ye felt a ripple of unease, his steps didn’t falter in the slightest as he walked straight toward the locker.
However, just as he was about to touch the drawer’s handle...
Everything changed in an instant!
THUD! THUD THUD! THUDTHUDTHUDTHUD—!!!
It was as if they had received some kind of command.
Throughout the entire morgue, the hundreds, even thousands, of surrounding refrigerated lockers all erupted with frenzied and chaotic knocking at the exact same moment!
This sudden turn of events made the hairs on the back of Lin Ye’s neck stand on end, even though he had already prepared himself mentally!
But the movement of his hand didn’t hesitate in the slightest—in fact, it moved even faster!
With a burst of speed, he yanked open the drawer of the locker that had made the first sound!
The next moment, Lin Ye’s pupils contracted to pinpricks!
He saw a hand.
A hand that had been severed at the wrist, its skin a deathly pale from being frozen, yet it was still jumping about lively inside the drawer!
The severed hand was like a startled crab, its five fingers frantically scratching at the metal interior, making a "THUD THUD" sound.
Lin Ye suppressed the turmoil in his heart and proceeded to pull open several more of the adjacent lockers.
