Chapter 107 - 102: Showdown (Part 2)
"Xiaoye, how did you earn all this money?"
"Please tell me you didn’t take out any loans!"
Lin Ye shook his head gently. "I participated in a city-wide competition a while back and won 600,000 in prize money."
"I also sold some of the resources the school gave me that I didn’t need."
"Mom, Sis."
"You two don’t need to put so much pressure on yourselves anymore."
"From now on, I can cover all our family’s expenses by myself."
"Things are going to get better for our family. I’m looking for a way for Dad to regrow his right leg after he gets back from the Seventh War Zone."
Lin Ye’s voice was steady and firm.
Li Wan and Lin Wei listened, a bit dazed.
"You might not know this, but while I can’t claim to be the best in the entire city right now..."
"...making it into the top fifty is no problem at all."
"In a little over half a month, we have the most important city-wide mock exam before this year’s National Martial Arts University Entrance Exam. I’ll use my results to prove everything to you."
"So, Sis, trust me this once."
"Quit."
Lin Ye probably didn’t even realize it himself.
His identity and role in the family had quietly transformed from the "burden" everyone had to scrimp and save to support into the "pillar."
There were well over ten thousand martial arts students in the entire city!
’Top fifty?’
’What did that even mean?’
’That meant being one of the chosen few at the very top of the pyramid, the absolute cream of the crop among all of Dongjiang City’s high school students!’
’Someone the province’s top martial arts academies would be fighting over!’
The rims of Li Wan’s eyes reddened without warning.
In that moment, she truly felt that her son had grown up.
He had grown into a great, towering tree, one that could shelter their family from the wind and rain.
This feeling of absolute reliability and security was something she had previously only felt from her husband, Lin Tao.
Lin Wei stared blankly at Lin Ye. Her brother’s deep eyes were filled with a confidence and power she had never seen before.
It wasn’t the empty boasting of a teenager.
It was an unshakeable conviction born from absolute power.
She finally understood why Lin Ye had said what he did just now.
With his current power and standing, the circles he moved in and the things he was exposed to were already far beyond anything she and her mother could imagine.
’What he said is very likely true!’
Lin Wei nodded, her voice unusually firm.
"Okay, I believe you."
"I’ll quit right now."
Without a hint of hesitation, she immediately dialed a contact saved as "Mr. Hu."
The call connected quickly.
"Hello, Lin. What’s up? Is there a problem at work?"
A gentle, magnetic, middle-aged man’s voice came from the other end of the line.
Lin Wei glanced at Lin Ye beside her and composed her thoughts.
She started by politely thanking him for his appreciation and support, then explained her family’s current predicament in an apologetic tone.
She said her father needed someone to care for him and that she might have to go away for a while, making it impossible for her to continue with the job.
"Is that so... That’s such a shame."
His voice was filled with regret.
"Lin, everyone in the department has seen your work ethic and attitude. You’re outstanding. Are you sure you won’t reconsider? If it’s just a temporary hardship, the company can try to figure something out."
"Getting time off is very easy to arrange."
"No, I couldn’t. Thank you so much for your kind offer, Mr. Hu. I’m truly sorry," Lin Wei politely declined again.
Mr. Hu on the other end of the line fell silent for a moment.
"Alright."
"Since you’ve already made your decision, I won’t try to keep you. However, you worked five days this week, and you still need to be paid for that. Our company doesn’t shortchange any employee who works hard."
"How about this: finance will settle the accounts tomorrow. The day after tomorrow, find some time to come to the office to pick up this week’s pay and handle the work handover and resignation procedures. What do you think?"
Hearing that she had to go to the office, Lin Wei instinctively started to refuse.
She just wanted to completely sever her ties with this bizarre company.
However, just as she was about to speak, she saw Lin Ye give her a slight nod.
Lin Wei instantly understood her brother’s meaning.
If she simply vanished without even collecting her salary, it would look suspicious and be more likely to arouse their suspicion.
Once they grew suspicious and started investigating her, she would truly be bringing trouble upon herself.
"Okay, no problem, Mr. Hu."
"I’ll come by the day after tomorrow, in the morning."
The call ended.
The atmosphere in the house remained somewhat tense.
Lin Ye broke the silence.
"Sis, what’s the company’s address?"
"I’ll go pick it up for you."
This was Lin Ye’s true goal.
To keep his sister out of it, and draw the vortex to himself.
Lin Wei quickly sent Lin Ye a message containing a link to the address.
Floor 17, Block A, Science and Technology Innovation Building, 22 Fuxing Road.
"The entire floor is their office. Reception and the HR department are in Suite 1701."
Lin Wei added.
Lin Ye saved the address to his bookmarks, and his heart suddenly felt a little lighter.
Because the address was for a normal office building.
It wasn’t connected to the ruined city.
This meant that even though his sister, Lin Wei, had joined Dawn Creatures, she likely hadn’t come into contact with the core leadership, much less been put in charge of any actual experiments.
’Her involvement isn’t deep, which means getting her out should be easier.’
...
「The next day, as night fell.」
Lin Ye once again snuck into the Second Ring area of the ruined city.
He suppressed his entire aura, moving like a shadow melting into the darkness as he cautiously made his way toward the massive silhouette of the Third Hospital.
