Chapter 49: Go on, taste it and tell me what you think
Lin Huahua herself was also shocked when that rich smell drifted into her nose, because to be honest, she had only been saying things with a brave face and a prayer in her heart, yet now that the scent had really come out so well, even she could not help staring at the meat with surprise.
This really smelled good.
Not just good in a normal way either.
It was the kind of smell that made a person’s mouth fill with saliva before they even took a bite, and the more it roasted over the fire, the more the scent spread through the cave until the whole place smelled like something far better than the usual plain roasted meat they were used to.
Mu Qingyi was the first to look at Lin Huahua properly after the shock settled in his chest, and the calm deer beastman really could not hide the surprise in his eyes.
Deer beastmen were not fond of meat by nature. The smell was usually too heavy for them, and the taste often sat too thick on the tongue, so most of them preferred tender leaves, wild fruits, and roots instead.
But at this moment, even Mu Qingyi had to admit that the rich scent rising from the fire was far better than any roasted meat he had ever smelled before.
Because he had not expected that this little female, who looked like she would lose a fight against a heavy blanket, would actually know how to make meat smell this good with a few leaves and spices.
His heart softened even more as he looked at her.
His Huahua really had changed.
Or maybe she had always had strange hidden skills and no one knew.
Feng Yiren on the other hand looked as if somebody had walked over and slapped his fox pride right on the face, because just a moment ago he had been standing there so sure that this little rat was only bluffing, and now the smell filling the cave was loudly proving that she actually had some idea of what she was doing.
This made the fox feel a little embarrassed.
Very little.
Just enough to annoy him.
His fox ears twitched once and his tail gave a slow wave behind him, but the look in his red eyes had already changed from teasing amusement to real surprise.
As for Hu Baiyu, the white lion was still sitting quietly in the corner, doing his best to avoid looking directly at Lin Huahua, because the image of her in the bath kept forcing its way back into his mind no matter how hard he tried to push it away.
The way water had clung to her soft curves and the gentle rise and fall of her chest under the steam, the innocent way her fluffy white tail had curled and swayed as she moved... and each time the memory resurfaced, a slow, guilty heat bloomed across his ears again, burning red beneath his thick mane until the warmth spread down his neck and settled heavy in his chest.
So he did not say anything.
Not that he could.
He only lowered his eyes, sat very still, and tried not to look like a lion whose innocent mind had been completely dirtied in one evening.
Lin Huahua saw all three of them staring and immediately wanted to feel proud, but because she herself had not expected the smell to come out this well, she could only force her face to stay calm and act as if this had been the obvious result from the beginning.
Humph.
Of course it smelled good.
What else had they expected?
Mu Qingyi quickly cut a small piece of the meat for her and because the deer beastman was careful by nature, he did not hand it to her immediately. Instead he blew on it first to cool it down, and only after making sure it would not burn her mouth did he bring it gently to her lips.
Lin Huahua opened her mouth and took the bite, then chewed slowly while the other three watched her face as if her expression would decide the fate of the whole evening.
To their surprise, Lin Huahua did not brighten.
She did not look amazed.
She did not even nod proudly.
Instead, her little brows slowly knitted together.
Mu Qingyi froze.
Feng Yiren’s tail stopped swaying.
Even Hu Baiyu lifted his eyes again.
Lin Huahua chewed a little more carefully and then swallowed, but the more she thought about it, the more she felt that something was not right.
The smell was wonderful.
Very wonderful.
But once it actually entered the mouth, the taste did not match that mouth watering scent completely. It was not bad. In fact, it was good. It was just not balanced the way she wanted. It felt like she had reached the door but failed to step fully inside.
Lin Huahua looked down at the meat with a serious face.
Something was missing.
She could feel it very clearly.
The three males saw her reaction and immediately grew confused, because the smell alone was enough to make them feel like this meat had already become something amazing, yet Lin Huahua still looked dissatisfied.
So after a moment, she lifted her chin and said, "Go on, taste it and tell me what you think."
Mu Qingyi was the first to obey.
He paused for a brief moment after cutting the piece.
Normally, he would not touch meat unless there was no other choice, but this was something Huahua had made with her own hands, and she was looking at him so seriously that he could not bear to refuse.
So he finally brought the small piece to his mouth and tasted it carefully.
The moment the meat entered his mouth, his eyes widened slightly.
To him, this was already the best roasted meat he had ever tasted.
The scent from the leaves and the spices had entered the meat in a way that made it richer and far better than the plain roasting they were used to in this primitive world.
Even so, Mu Qingyi could still tell that the taste was richer and heavier than what he would normally like, which only made him admire Lin Huahua more, because if even he found it this good, then for beastmen who actually liked meat, this was probably already close to irresistible.
Feng Yiren did not wait politely after seeing Mu Qingyi’s face. He had already been half dying from that smell anyway, so he grabbed a piece for himself and bit into it.
The next second, his fox ears stood straighter and his red eyes lit up so quickly that he almost looked like he had just seen treasure.
This fox almost nearly barked.
His mouth moved faster than his dignity.
"Little rat, what did you even do to this meat?" Feng Yiren blurted out, staring at her with excited eyes. "I never knew you could actually do this. No, forget that, I never knew leaves could do this. This is amazing. This is actually amazing. I take back what I thought earlier. Well, not all of it because I was still right about many things, but this part, this part I take back."
