Necromancer: Kingdom Building with My Legion of Undead Knights

Chapter 266: More Sword Practice

The next morning, Darion was back in the courtyard before dawn. The sky was still dark, the stars faintly visible overhead. He had the sword and the manual with him, and he was ready to work.

Garren arrived shortly after, his footsteps quiet on the stone. He was carrying a water skin and a cloth, his expression focused. "Ready?" he asked.

Darion nodded. "Ready."

Garren worked with Darion on the next set of moves from the manual.

The sequences were more complex than the first set, requiring multiple steps and precise timing. Each movement had to flow seamlessly into the next, with no hesitation, no breaks. The pattern was demanding, pushing Darion’s body to its limits.

Darion struggled. His body resisted the positions the manual demanded, his muscles aching.

The movements felt unnatural, contorted, and his coordination was off. He stumbled through the sequence, his sword clattering against the stone ground.

"Again," Garren said, his voice calm but firm.

Darion picked up the sword and tried again. His footwork was clumsy, and his sword arm wobbled. He couldn’t maintain the flow of the movement.

"Again."

He tried again, focusing on his breathing, on the rhythm. He moved through the sequence slowly, each step deliberate, each motion precise.

The sword began to feel more natural in his hands, more like an extension of his body.

"Again. Faster this time."

Darion moved through the sequence again, his body responding better now.

The movements were becoming second nature, ingrained in his muscle memory. He could feel the rhythm of it, the way each motion flowed into the next.

"Better," Garren said. "Now try the next sequence."

Darion studied the next set of diagrams, his eyes scanning the intricate steps.

The movements were more fluid than the previous set, designed to be executed in a single, unbroken flow. He moved through them, his body responding to the pattern. It wasn’t perfect, but it was progress.

"Keep going," Garren said. "You’re almost there."

Darion continued, his focus unwavering, his determination fueling him. He moved through the sequence again, his steps more confident, his body more attuned to the movements. He felt the sword becoming an extension of his will.

"Now try it with the sword," Garren said.

Darion raised the sword, his grip firm. He moved through the sequence, his body flowing with the motion, the sword cutting through the air.

A golden glow flickered at the tip, but it was faint, barely there. He tried again, focusing his mind, pushing his energy into the blade. This time, the glow was brighter, stronger.

"Good," Garren said. "Keep practicing. You’ll get there."

Darion continued, his practice stretching through the morning. He could feel the flow of the sequence becoming second nature to him, his body adapting to the motions. He moved through the steps again, his breathing steady.

"Now, combine the sequences," Garren said. "Put them together."

Darion moved into the first sequence, his body flowing into the second, the third, the fourth. The movements were seamless, each flowing into the next like a choreographed dance.

At the end of the sequence, he brought the sword around and held the finishing position. A golden light washed over the blade, strong and steady.

"Better," Garren said. "You’re making good progress."

Darion lowered the sword, feeling the ache in his muscles. "It’s starting to feel natural," he said. "I’m beginning to understand the pattern."

"That’s because you’re learning to let go of your expectations and trust your instincts," Garren said. "The sword moves through you, not just in your hands. You have to become one with the movement, let it flow through your body. The more you practice, the more you’ll become attuned to the sword, the sequence, the flow."

Darion nodded, absorbing the words. "I’ll keep at it."

They took a break, sitting on the courtyard wall, drinking water from the skin Garren had brought. The sun was fully up now, its warm light spreading across the courtyard. Darion’s muscles ached, but it was a good ache, a satisfying ache.

"You’re improving quickly," Garren said. "Faster than I expected."

Darion smiled. "I’m surprised too. I didn’t think I’d be able to pick this up so fast."

Garren nodded. "You have a natural aptitude for it. Once you relax and let the movements flow, the sword will respond more easily."

Darion took a deep breath. "I never thought I’d be learning to fight with a sword. I always relied on my undeads to do the fighting for me."

"Nothing wrong with that," Garren said. "But being able to fight for yourself is never a bad thing. You never know when you might need it."

Darion nodded. "True. I’ve already proven to myself that I can learn this. And it’s stressful, but it’s also fun. I never expected it to be so engaging."

Garren smiled. "That’s because you’re learning something new, something that challenges you. It’s a good feeling."

They sat in silence, a comfortable one, the sounds of the castle filling the air. Darion looked at the sword in his hands, its blade gleaming in the morning light.

The sword, though sort of rusty and having been in that room for lord knows when, was actually something you could flaunt about.

It was just slick, long and flawlessly ’ancient’.

"What do you think the sword actually does?" Darion asked. "I mean, the magic. The golden light. What is it?"

Garren considered the question. "I think it’s a form of energy manipulation. The sword amplifies your intent, channeling it through the blade to create a result. That’s why the movements are so important. They’re a way of focusing your will."

Darion nodded. "So it’s like directing energy."

"Exactly," Garren said. "The sword is a tool, but you’re the one who wields it. Let’s say the magic is... yours, not the sword’s. The sword just makes it easier to access."

Darion looked at the blade, its edge gleaming in the light. "I want to master this. I want to learn all the sequences, unlock all the power."

Garren nodded. "We’ll keep practicing. Every morning. Until you’ve mastered all the moves."
