Chapter 161: Gu Chen likes to play little tricks
’I am sorry your father made a little too many enemies!’
’And you have to pay the price for it.’
’But that’s what makes you such a good son.’
’Kuchi Kuchi Koooo!’
Meanwhile unaware of the disturbing thoughts going through Gu Fan’s scheming head, Gu Chen sneered in contempt, perfectly satisfied that the trash had just willingly walked right into being his meat shield. The trash was no more than an annoying fly in his life whom he could squash between his fingers whenever he wanted, but only the heavens knows when and how this fly has slowly become a demon in his heart.
Wherever he went, he would find a trail left behind, by this annoying trash that left him with his face in the mud.
But no more. This time, he was going to take care of him once and for all.
"Let’s Go!" Gu Chen ordered and following the lead of Gu Fan, all of them entered the Miasma Woods.
And as soon as they stepped into the thick, sickly green miasma, the suffocating stench of rotting vegetation, flesh and bones instantly assaulted their senses. And despite being from a clan that dealt in poisons, every single one of them, including Gu Chen quickly covered their noses, not wanting to inhale the toxic fog.
But Gu Fan walked calmly at the very front of the formation, his Heaven-Devouring Poison Body actively breathing in the highly toxic fog.
The terrifyingly dense poison passively filtered right through his pores, seamlessly converting the deadly miasma into pure Spiritual Qi that actively replenished his vitality with every single step he took, all while his King-Tier Blood-Drinker Sword rested lazily on his broad shoulder as he scanned the muddy, treacherous path ahead.
"Brother Gu Fan, that is quite an extraordinary weapon you are carrying," Gu Chen suddenly called out from the center of the formation, his eyes glued on the crimson blade. He could tell there was something extraordinary about the sword, "I don’t recall our clan’s armoury ever possessing such an artifact, so where exactly did you get it from?"
Hearing Gu Chen, Gu Fan didn’t turn around as he simply chuckled lightly, smoothly lying through his teeth with perfect ease, "Oh, this cheap piece of metal? It was actually Madam Li who was kind enough to gift it to me yesterday afternoon. She felt it might help us survive this perilous journey."
The surrounding disciples instantly erupted into loud, highly confused murmurs as they gripped their own weapons tightly.
"Madam Li? Why would the matriarch give a valuable weapon to this useless trash?" a disciple whispered, totally unafraid to hurl insults right behind Gu Fan’s back.
"Why the hell would she be so generous to this cripple? Just because he got lucky a couple of times?" another lackey sneered in jealousy, "He must have shamelessly used the Patriarch’s name to extort her like a common thug! He might be illegitimate. But he is his son."
Even Gu Chen was left surprised by the revelation. He had long since known that Madam Li hated him, so why would she give him this expensive sword?
It made no sense. Just like the time she slapped him to save Gu Fan.
What was going inside her head?
As he stared at the broad back of his hated brother, a malicious smirk quickly appeared on his face. She gave him the sword to protect him, but accidents can happen. And he could effortlessly retrieve the sword straight from Gu Fan’s mangled corpse and claim it as his own righteous spoil of war.
"Madam Li is truly generous to brother Fan. She must really care about you," Gu Chen praised loudly with a fake smile, hiding his greedy intentions as he stared at the sword, "You must absolutely cherish such a gift, Junior Brother, so please use its sharp edge to clear our path."
After travelling about a few hours, the group had walked for several miles through the dead, twisted trees before Gu Chen’s Righteous Eyes caught onto a subtle fluctuation in the Qi.
Growing right next to a bubbling, highly acidic swamp pool were a massive cluster of ’Frenzy-Blood Spores’.
Frenzy-Blood Spores was an incredibly rare and highly volatile fungus that while looked harmless on the surface, once disturbed released an extremely potent pheromone which although had no effect on humans, was capable of instantly driving any nearby Spirit Beasts into a mindless, bloodthirsty rage the very second they inhaled it.
Gu Chen’s eyes instantly gleamed with excitement. It hasn’t even been a few hours and he already had a perfect opportunity to execute his plan.
Along with the Frenzy-Blood Spores, Gu Fan also sensed several spiritual signatures all around them currently relaxed.
"Hold on a minute,!" Gu Chen whispered as he raised his hand to stop everyone. He then pointed his finger towards the narrow path right in front of them.
"Brother Gu Fan, I sense something along that muddy bank to the left," Gu Chen ordered with a serious tone, perfectly hiding his lethal trap, "Please go inspect that path closely to see if the thieves left any track for us to follow?"
"Of course, Brother Chen," Gu Fan nodded obediently, completely playing the role of the subservient younger brother as he immediately stepped off the main path and walked directly toward the bubbling swamp pool.
But exactly as Gu Fan was right next to the cluster of Frenzy-Blood Spores, Gu Chen discreetly flicked his wrist, and silently shot a very thin needle coated in a highly condensed Spiritual Qi directly into the largest fungus pod.
Gu Chen thought he was being cheeky. In fact, no one saw his little trick except for obviously Gu Fan.
Gu Fan’s enhanced perception easily caught the subtle fluctuation of spiritual Qi flying through the foggy air, but his eyes merely gleamed with amusement as he refused to act and stop the blatant sabotage, allowing Gu Chen’s little trick to play out just to see his reaction.
And just like that, before anyone could notice anything, the massive pod right next to Gu Fan’s face burst open with a soft, wet pop, instantly blanketing Gu Fan’s entire body in a thick cloud of highly concentrated, enraging blood-toxin while Gu Chen immediately gripped his silver sword in anticipation, already preparing to play the hero after the bloodthirsty beasts had ripped his beloved brother into bloody chunks.
However what Gu Chen did not notice was that the absolute second the pheromones from the Frenzy-Blood Spores touched Gu Fan’s skin, his Heaven-Devouring Poison Body without a millisecond of delay, instantly activated without him even needing to circulate his Qi.
And the very next moment, it rapidly absorbed the enraging toxin directly into his pores like a massive, greedy sponge, completely neutralizing the scent and even masking his presence.
"What just happened?" One of the disciples called out alarmed.
"Isn’t that...?" Another disciple recognised the Frenzy-Blood Spore, but before he could warn others, a terrifyingly dense killing intent that suddenly erupted from beneath the bubbling swamp pool.
Gu Chen’s little trap had successfully awakened the beasts, but what he had no taken into account was that since Gu Fan had instantly absorbed all the scent around his body, the residual pheromones drifted straight past him, washing over Gu Chen and his clustered disciples on the main path.
"Brother Chen! Watch out! Thjere is something scary here!" Gu Fan suddenly yelled with a perfectly panicked expression, deliberately taking a step backward away from the bubbling swamp, tripping over the tree root and vanishing from everyone’s sight.
And just then the swamp suddenly trembled.
Boom!
Boom!
Boom!
Massive waves exploded across the black water, and the swamp erupted as eight gigantic beasts burst forth.
Each was over thirty meters long, and their scales resembled black iron while their jaws could easily crush spirit treasures.
And most of all what caught everyone’s eyes was a single horn protruded from each forehead.
It was the Ironback Abyss Crocodiles.
The Ironback Abyss Crocodiles let out deafening, bloodcurdling roars, and exactly as they lunged forward towards the Gu Clan disciples, the transparent blue system interface appeared in front of Gu Fan.
[Ding!]
[Hostile Targets Identified: Ironback Abyss Crocodiles.]
[Beast Cultivation Levels: 2x 6th Stage Spirit Realm, 3x 7th Stage Spirit Realm, 2x 8th Stage Spirit Realm, 1x 9th Stage Spirit Realm.]
Their glowing red eyes completely ignored the scentless Gu Fan as they became entirely fixated on the Frenzy Blood Spore pheromones currently drifting over the main group.
"What in the heavens?!" Gu Qiang shrieked in absolute terror as the massive beasts moved totally contradictory to their massive sights, aggressively charging straight into the clustered formation of the Gu Clan disciples with terrifying momentum.
And before the devoted lackey could even raise his shield to protect himself, the lead Ironback Abyss Crocodile a massive 8th Stage Spirit Realm beast snapped its massive, razor-sharp jaws directly around Gu Qiang’s waist, crushing his bones like cheap glass with a sickening loud crunch.
"Brother Chen!"
"Ahhhh! Brother Chen Save me!" Gu Qiang screamed at the absolute top of his lungs, his eyes bulging out of his skull.
"Good brother Crocodile!" From behind the tree Gu Fan stood up rubbing his sore buttocks as he looked at Gu Qiang’s upper torso hanging out of the crocodile’s jaws and gratefully smiled.
"I would have handled him on my own."
"You did not have to take revenge for me."
