Chapter 62: Adept Descending
"So," Akira spoke as she walked alongside the two of them, "where do we call home? I hope it’s not some tree house in the middle of a forest somewhere."
Melody frowned in response. "What’s wrong with tree houses? I had one back at home and they’re cool."
"Try living there everyday for at least a year." Akira replied. "Just entering and exiting is enough stress. You have to climb and drop each time, and anytime there’s a strong wind, you wonder if this is when your treehouse would collapse."
Melody was silent for a moment before nodding. "Fair."
"So, where are we staying?" Akira asked again.
"We’re currently in a Tier 5 city called Havenhart. We had a house but we sold it, so we now stay in a hotel." Lukas answered.
"Hotel huh?" Akira grinned at them both. "I’m sure you guys were up to some freaky things."
"And I’m sure you’d like to join." Lukas retorted.
"Damn right I will." She grinned back. Then a long yawn escaped her mouth. "I’m sure we all can get to know each other better. Both with and without clothes on. But for now, I need a long, deep sleep."
"Busy day?" Melody asked.
"Like you wouldn’t believe." She answered. "Had to coordinate on a big mission as my advancement criteria for the sisterhood, but it all went to shit. Our information was out of date, and we ended up paying for it. I’m just glad it’s all over."
"Advancement criteria? Sisterhood?" Lukas muttered with a frown.
"The Sisters of Blood." Akira said. "You guys don’t have that here?"
"Nope. Never heard of them before." He answered.
She grinned in response, bouncing as she walked. "You have no idea just how much relief that just brought to me. I’m finally out of that damned sisterhood. There’s no way I’m joining it again in this world."
"I’m guessing they weren’t exactly good people to be around." He chuckled.
"They had their good eggs, but the organization is largely rotten. You’d find it hard to believe that people capable of such evil are part of a church funded division."
"Oh, you guys were nuns?" Melody asked, her voice filled with curiosity.
"Yeah." Akira answered. "Combat nuns responsible for cleansing the world of evil. Or at least that’s what we tell others. The only vows the sisterhood remembers to keep are their vows of celibacy. Everything else was on the table. Gambling, murder, bribery, you name it."
"I’m not opposed to doing those things, but not when they’re coming from hypocrites like the sisterhood, who are upheld in public as the standard for what good and pure people should be like." She shrugged. "I guess it’s their hypocrisy that disgusts me, not their crimes."
As they walked, the city gates slowly came into view, and they could see the guards in the distance.
But before they could take more than ten steps towards their destination, an aura descended upon them.
An Adept aura.
The aura slammed into them from above like a moving truck, sending them falling to the ground on their knees.
In that instant, Akira’s sword was already in her hand, summoned from what looked like her spatial ring.
The sword was a Xiphos, but an abnormally large one. Its double edged, leaf-shaped blade was long, and with a two handed hilt attached to it, it was almost the same length as Akira herself.
The blade was made of a light colored bluish metal, while the guard down to the pommel was decorated with gold.
She held the sword with one hand, but even with all her S-rank power, she couldn’t lift it as the aura pressed upon her.
All of them gritted their teeth, knowing the only reason their faces weren’t pressed against the ground was their hands, which held them up.
Lukas felt his heart beating hard in his chest from both excitement and fear. This was the power of an Adept! Even with all his stats, he couldn’t withstand it.
He had no idea what rank the Adept was, as his senses as an Awakener were not powerful enough to check that.
Their eyes were fixed upwards as a man slowly descended from the sky, the breeze fluttering his clothes.
He looked to be in his thirties, with long brown hair that was tied in a ponytail, equally brown eyes, and an average face.
The man stared at them for a few seconds, watching them struggle to keep themselves from being bashed into the ground from his aura alone, before releasing his aura.
The energy dissipated into nothingness, and the man floated the rest of the way down to land softly on the ground.
The message was clear. There was nothing they could do to stop him if he wanted to kill them. He’d let them go out of mercy.
Lukas, Melody, and Akira rose to their feet immediately, but before anyone could do anything, Lukas took charge of the situation.
He stepped forward, folding himself into a slight bow. There was only one male Adept around here. "City Lord."
His heart kept hammering in his chest. Had the man sensed them summoning Akira? Had he seen it? Did he know their secret?
"Rise." The man spoke. His voice was deep, and on his face was a calm expression, as if nothing could faze him.
His eyes slid from Lukas to Melody, before settling on Akira.
A thought entered Lukas head as he eyed the man. ’Is the man about to hit on my wife? Would I have to fight him?’
Fortunately, the man’s eyes held no hint of anything sexual. His gaze was simply calculative.
"A C-rank, an A-rank and an S-rank returning from a hunt." The City Lord stared at them. "Sounds like the beginning of a joke."
His eyes didn’t leave Akira as he spoke. "I assume you’re aware of the Leveling Protocol."
"Leveling Protocol?" Akira muttered with a frown. "I have no idea what that means."
Lukas noticed that she still hasn’t dropped her sword, her guard still up against the man. He couldn’t help but smile slightly at the sight. She’d fit in perfectly with him and Melody.
Upon hearing her answer, the City Lord gave a long suffering sigh. "Very well. Listen up carefully, you three. I won’t repeat myself and no one will explain this to you again. Understood?"
