Chapter 67: Siren’s Call
The journey back to the kingdom through the forest had been just as the knight commander had described; they encountered several variations of wild beasts and monsters, but the now Adept-realm heroes were more than capable of handling them all, while they steadily increased their own levels, too.
Though it’s become relatively slower to increase their levels since the strongest monster they have and will encounter on the journey will at most be at the master realm.
They have, in fact, come upon two such monsters; one was a wild boar, and the other was a giant serpent.
Relying on their strengths and now well-nurtured battle prowess, the heroes were able to dispatch both these monsters after less than thirty minutes of intense battle, with Andrew landing the most devastating blow on both.
Their levels climbed steadily because of these hunts, and their privilege as heroes with ridiculous growth speeds.
However, since they’ve only come upon two such master realm monsters, they were still on the lower range of the Adept realm.
They would hunt for game, then prepare their food by a makeshift bonfire that the knight commander had taught Andrew how to make. On their first night sleeping in the woods, they camped by a stream nearby.
On the morning of the second day, the knight commander calculated that they had only two days left to reach the palace.
The heroes, not used to such a lifestyle, were finding it hard to adjust at first, but because of their improving physical cognition, their bodies assimilated quickly.
In the afternoon of the second day, help finally arrived.
Ten soldiers at the Adept realm and one leading them at the master realm arrived with a bunch of goods and supplies, greatly relieving the constrained needs of the heroes and allowing them time to rest once in a while as they cleared the way ahead towards the palace.
The heroes still did most of the slaughtering of the beast that they came upon because they needed the exp, and were far better fighters than the Adept realm soldiers that had arrived.
The master realm leader was a different case, but at the rate the heroes were improving, in no time at all, maybe just two of them would be able to take him down while still being at the Adept realm.
Andrew could probably even put up a fight against him already. All this while the heroes have not been able to channel their divine skills.
That’s saying a lot because with every major realm node breakthrough, there is a large bonus awarded to stats, and this bonus always doubles with every next major realm; this just goes to show the differences between these realms.
It was now the second night since the heroes began their journey back. They were in a lighter mood because of the arrival of the soldiers, sharing food, laughing, and talking by the bonfire, while Roberto regaled the group with his exaggerated bravery while descending the dungeon.
It was all well and good, but Zorat was dying of boredom.
It’s been almost forty-eight hours, and nothing that eventful has happened.
Aside from him occasionally catching Ava looking his way, which she immediately pretends she was not, and Erica doing the exact same thing, Zorat was physically yawning in boredom.
He saw no appeal in needless chit chat, and even if he did, his former conversation body was now looking at him like a woman on heat. Zorat was sure that if it were not for the others present, Erica would have pounced on him a long time ago. Compounded with the fact that they were all sleeping on futons on the ground by the burning fire, there was not much room for her to get bold.
After at least an hour of eating and talking, the heroes started turning in for the night, while the newly arrived soldiers would keep the night watch.
Zorat contemplated just tearing space apart and going directly to his accommodations in the palace, but covering that up would be quite the hassle. So, instead, to kill his boredom, Zorat decided to go for a walk.
Reporting kindly to the lead soldier keeping watch, that he intends to take some time for some fresh air. The lead soldier first insisted he was accompanied, but Zorat insisted he would rather not.
Zorat sighed in boredom as he exited the bonfire square where the heroes and the knight commander lay.
He turned back to look and saw them all sleeping; well, except for the knight commander, who was now looking straight at him suspiciously from on top of her futon.
Zorat grinned as he turned his back to her, going deeper into the woods. He had targeted Broddy earlier as his next victim to replicate his divine skill, but Broddy’s current burning desire was never to see Erica in anger again.
Very sweet of Broddy, but completely inactionable to Zorat.
Erica seemed like she had wanted to speak to Broddy about some not-so-favorable news, but it seems they have not managed to broach the subject just yet.
So, it was a burst on Broddy’s end; at least for the moment.
Zorat had brought his attention to the other heroes, and as expected, they all had completely broken abilities and stats as well, and most of their desires were just as fucked up.
But sadly, the current setting was not conducive to fulfilling any of these desires at the moment; at least not in a way that would make Zorat the subject of their fulfillment.
So, Zorat was now very bored, and his dormant urges for wanton massacre were beginning to flare up.
So bored in fact that he was even beginning to hear some sweet beckoning melodies in his ears as he moved through the dark woods.
"Oh ?"
Zorat grinned as he turned his head in the direction from which the sweet melody was emanating.
A couple of hundred meters to the north, a group of Assassins, completely shrouded from head to toe in black assassin regalia, were perched on several tree branches, completely blended with the darkness, as they stood with their hands behind their backs.
In the middle, a feminine figure, shaped like an hourglass, and also wrapped in black, was playing softly on a flute.
But weirdly enough, there was no sound emanating from the instrument.
After playing for a couple more seconds, she brought down the flute before nodding at a figure standing in a branch of the tree at the back.
"Good job, number five...." the figure voiced in a strong baritone.
"Now we wait for the melody to bring him here."
