Chapter 406 406: Planetary Consciousness for Dummies
Upon learning that in the Ōtsutsuki clan, Kaguya was merely a branch family member, and that even Isshiki—who was half-crippled—was considered the equivalent of a regular jōnin-level individual…
Tobirama immediately descended into anxiety.
His thoughts quickly began to align with Kazuki's.
If he were the head of the Ōtsutsuki clan, and so many problems had occurred during chakra fruit harvesting on this planet… what would he do?
He'd surely send an overwhelming force to completely annihilate the shinobi world in one swift stroke—eliminating any possibility for its talented individuals to rise up.
After all, for a species that could traverse the universe and feed on planetary surface energy…
Tobirama didn't believe the leader of the Ōtsutsuki would be the type to avoid war.
This universe didn't have that many Sarutobi Hiruzens lying around, after all…
And judging from how Momoshiki and Urashiki had pursued Kaguya, it was clear that the Ōtsutsuki clan had already locked onto the shinobi world—the next wave of reinforcements was on its way!
Aside from Kazuki, there wasn't a single reliable person in the entire shinobi world!
Starting with that Sage of Six Paths, who'd been lost in his pipe dreams… then came Uchiha Madara stirring up chaos… even if their childish roleplaying plan had succeeded, once a full-powered Ōtsutsuki descended—what could they possibly do?
What, were they going to dream together inside genjutsu? Build mutual understanding?
Peace, my ass!
…Wait no—Uchiha Madara already got crushed by Isshiki, didn't he?
Damn it, he's practically another Uchiha Hiruzen at this point!
"Kazuki, we must—" Tobirama couldn't help but speak as the thought hit him.
"Not yet, Tobirama," Kazuki interrupted gently.
Then, he transmitted information on the Planetary Consciousness and the Ōtsutsuki God to Tobirama—"This is the final method I've prepared against them…"
Tobirama took a deep breath, forcing himself to suppress the fury, the frustration, and all the mounting emotions. He focused seriously on the data Kazuki had just relayed.
"I know—both of these methods are either too dangerous… or too speculative. The chances of success aren't high,"
Kazuki said slowly.
"As for the Ōtsutsuki God's remains—I may have persuaded Kaguya to help me draw out power from them, but even so… that thing might still hold unspeakable dangers. Unless it's the last possible resort… I won't touch it."
"Though the Planetary Consciousness is considered nothing more than myth and legend even within the Ōtsutsuki clan… I can actually feel it now. This planet—it's beginning to grant me authority, as if a nascent will is slowly awakening and recognizing me."
"Do you remember when I drew out the natural energy from the ocean?"
Still reeling from the vast amount of information flooding his mind, Senju Tobirama managed a nod. "I remember. Kazuki… you drained an entire sea of its natural energy in just moments…"
"I asked the Sage of Six Paths about it afterward—and also the sages of the Three Great Sage Regions. They all said it was impossible. Even the Divine Trees the Ōtsutsuki once cultivated never achieved that level of efficiency…"
"The Divine Trees forcibly extract natural energy from the ocean," Kazuki said softly. "But I was granted permission by the planet itself. It was like forming a contract with the sea."
"You know how my dōjutsu works, Tobirama… After the Shinobi World War and the battle against the Ōtsutsuki, all those intense emotions converged on me. That connection triggered something strange between me and the planet."
"That's why I had to become the villain."
"The history of the shinobi world proves it—when there's no external threat, people cannot unite. I had to play the role of the enemy to give everyone a common target—to make them put aside their personal ambitions, even if only for a while, and work together as one."
"And even if the Planetary Consciousness never awakens… the experience of uniting in this effort might be enough to sever the chains of old hatred, if only temporarily, and let them taste a little of what peace feels like."
"Besides, if everyone grows stronger through this, they might at least be able to offer some resistance when the Ōtsutsuki invade."
"I don't care about my reputation. Being the villain doesn't matter to me."
Tobirama shut his eyes.
Even though he already knew Kazuki was a great man, he still found himself awed by the scale of his vision.
To unite the shinobi world, he had chosen to become a devil in everyone's eyes. To make the ninja stronger, to let them understand peace, and to give them even a sliver of hope in an uncertain future…
A thought suddenly emerged in Tobirama's heart—Was this rotten shinobi world, and these pathetic ninja… truly worth everything Kazuki was sacrificing for them?
Why should someone like Kazuki—so capable, so good—have to bear such a heavy burden?
It's not fair!
"Kazuki, I'll make sure those damned shinobi learn to unite—to fight harder!" Tobirama said in a low, steady voice, forcing down the pain tearing at his chest.
"Tell me what I can do! Let me take some of that weight off your shoulders!"
"Tobirama… I only came to talk."
Kazuki smiled. "In truth, the path of the Planetary Consciousness might end up just like the remains of the Ōtsutsuki God—leading to disaster."
"These powers that transcend dimensions… each of them has a powerful will of its own. For all I know, the Planetary Consciousness might see humanity as nothing more than parasites."
"There was a moment—just after I obtained the power of the sea—when I genuinely wanted to kill every living being with chakra or natural energy."
"I barely managed to hold back. That's why, after I came to my senses, I returned all the natural energy to the ocean."
Tobirama's heart trembled as the memory came back to him.
Just as Kazuki had described—when he obtained the power of the ocean back then, the cold indifference and killing intent in his eyes were so intense that even Senju Tobirama had felt fear.
No wonder Kazuki had voluntarily relinquished the natural energy that had already merged into his body.
"This… this is like bargaining with a tiger for its prey! The remains of the Ōtsutsuki God… the power of the Planetary Consciousness… for shinobi, these are terrifying third-party forces, no less dangerous than an Ōtsutsuki reinforcement unit…"
Even someone as sharp as Tobirama found himself at a complete loss in this moment.
And yet, Kazuki let out a loud laugh.
"Tobirama, even you can't think of a good strategy? I thought I was just getting dumber—but looks like this situation really is that hard to solve…"
"That actually makes me feel a little better."
Tobirama shot Kazuki a sharp glare.
Is he seriously cracking jokes right now? At a time like this? No—he's not just joking at my expense… he's joking with his own life on the line!
"External power… it just isn't reliable. Tobirama, this time… chances are, I'll have to rely on you to revive me."
Kazuki stretched out his arms in an exaggerated yawn, tone light and casual. "Here's my current plan—"
"The shinobi world unites against me as the villain. As they grow stronger, their collective emotional force helps awaken the Planetary Consciousness. And then, when the Ōtsutsuki reinforcements arrive… if even with all our power combined, we still can't win—"
"I'll burn myself out in battle! And if even opening the Gate of Death isn't enough to defeat them, then I'll have no choice but to ask Kaguya to help channel the power of the Ōtsutsuki God."
Kazuki's expression suddenly turned solemn.
"To face the Ōtsutsuki God… Tobirama, you'll have to help me summon the Planetary Consciousness—so that I can fuse both of these higher-dimensional forces within my body!"
"Once I open the Gate of Death, I won't be capable of guiding those two transcendental wills on my own. I'll have to rely on you and Kaguya to assist."
"If it comes to that point… I'll do everything I can to merge myself, the will of the Ōtsutsuki God's remains, and the will of the planet into one—to bring the three into equilibrium, cancel them out, and leave behind only a purified imprint of driving force within my soul."
"In that case, my body will become a supremely powerful shinobi tool. And the only ones who'll be able to wield it… will be you and Kaguya—both of whom share a soul imprint with me."
"And your access level… will be higher than hers. You understand, right? The power will be in your hands. And that… will let me rest easy."
Kazuki gave Tobirama's shoulder a relaxed pat, smiling as he said, "So, Tobirama, looks like you might end up being the Jinchūriki inside my body for the foreseeable future!"
"For the sake of the shinobi world's peace, I'm afraid I'll have to trouble you, haha…"
Tobirama tasted blood flooding his mouth.
It was the weight of helplessness… and the guilt he felt toward Kazuki—he had clenched his teeth so hard without realizing it that he'd crushed his gums and drawn blood.
"No! This can't happen! Are you trying to turn yourself into a puppet, Kazuki?!"
He suddenly lashed out with a sharp motion of his hand. "I refuse to help you! There has to be another way! Does saving the shinobi world really mean you alone have to sacrifice yourself?!"
"I'm telling you—don't pull that self-sacrificing crap, you damn Uchiha brat born with a twisted heart!" Tobirama shouted, eyes red with fury.
"I don't want it to come to that either, Tobirama…" Kazuki shrugged. "I want to be able to beat the Ōtsutsuki reinforcements too. I'd love it if even opening the Gate of Death wouldn't cost me my life…"
"But what if I throw down every last card and still lose? I have to find a way to ensure the shinobi world has a fallback. I can't just throw up my hands and say 'Guess we're screwed' when the time comes."
"So for that 'final method' I mentioned… you'd better start researching it thoroughly, Tobirama."
"There's a real chance we'll need it."
Tobirama's stubborn silence made it clear: he refused to accept Kazuki's plan.
Kazuki gazed at him deeply. "Then… until next time, Tobirama."
"Let's hope we succeed—in saving the shinobi world, together."
"Don't go, Kazuki! I will find a forbidden jutsu… I will find a better way!" Tobirama cried out desperately, watching Kazuki's figure grow more transparent.
But Kazuki only gave him a soft smile—then vanished.
What remained… were only cold, lifeless fragments of information: the soul imprint, the Planetary Consciousness…
"No!!" Tobirama jolted upright with a roar.
"…Hey, are you awake?"
From outside came Uchiha Izuna's voice. "Still having nightmares?"
"…Come in."
After a moment, Tobirama responded through labored breaths, his voice low and heavy.
The door creaked open.
Izuna stepped inside—and his heart skipped a beat.
There, staring straight at him, was a pair of Mangekyō eyes dripping with blood and brimming with terrifying hatred and raw ocular power!
This bastard Senju Tobirama…
What the hell happened to him?!
