Chapter 198: It’s Not a Loss If You Eat Your Fill
"Dad, do you want to go see your room?" Gu Jiaojiao knew exactly what he was thinking when he asked.
"Hehe, Jiaojiao, do you think I could take your mom to see our new courtyard later?" Mr. Gu asked, choosing his words carefully.
"Of course. Eldest Brother Gu can go with you. Gao Xiangming has a car, so it’ll be very convenient."
Gu Jiaojiao admired men like her father who doted on their wives. Besides, they had already agreed when they bought the courtyard that it was a joint purchase between their two families.
Mr. Gu had every right to take his wife and son to see their house. They were just catching a ride, after all.
Gu Jiaojiao had no reason to be unhappy about it. However, she wasn’t planning on moving into the new house just yet. After the summer vacation, she would be leaving for university in the Imperial City.
Su Qinchun still had school in the military compound, and it worked out well for their family of three to live there while running their stall selling cold noodles and savory crepes.
It was safe, and they could earn money. By the time she and her husband bought a courtyard in the Imperial City, Su Qinchun would be close to graduating. They could figure things out then.
Second Brother Gu’s mind was always on making money. "I’ll skip it. As long as you all like it, that’s what matters."
He knew his mother wanted to see the new house. But once they moved, it would be inconvenient to come back to the compound to sell their savory crepes.
There were plenty of factories outside the compound, so Second Brother Gu wasn’t worried about his income. He just wanted a chance to say a proper goodbye to his regular customers.
’If only I had an apprentice here in the compound,’ he thought. ’Then whether I move somewhere else or go to the Imperial City, my old customers could still get their savory crepes every day.’
Learning to make the crepes wasn’t actually difficult, but he wasn’t willing to teach just anyone.
As for seeing the rooms, he wasn’t in any rush. He’d see them eventually when he moved in.
"Jiaojiao, you should take a nap after lunch before you go. The sun is still really strong out," Su Shuochi said, placing another piece of fish into her bowl.
"That’s right, Jiaojiao. You get some rest. It won’t be too late for us to go after," Mrs. Gu added gently.
They used to live in the school’s staff dormitories back in Qing City, only returning to the Imperial City for major holidays.
They never had a house of their own in Qing City. Their real home was in the Imperial City.
Who would have thought that after so many years, they would finally own a house in Qing City, all thanks to their daughter.
Mrs. Gu’s health had pretty much recovered. She didn’t want to go back to her maiden home, where there hadn’t been a room for her in years.
She also felt awkward about living in her daughter’s home indefinitely. They had only just reunited with their biological daughter and didn’t want to rush back to the Imperial City.
Besides, her second son wanted to earn more money in Qing City, and her eldest son wasn’t well enough for a long train journey.
Now that they had their own house and Mrs. Gu had learned to cook, she was eager to see it and figure out if they could move in soon.
Gu Jiaojiao, of course, had no idea what her mother was thinking. From her perspective, as long as the Su family didn’t mind having her family around, she thought living together was actually quite lively. The main reason was that she herself was a lonely soul.
’If a lonely soul like me were to turn my back on my own family, I’d be squandering the very purpose of this second chance at life.’
Her husband, her family—they were her warmth in this world. They gave each other comfort.
She was doing her best to give herself and her loved ones a good life, and in return, she had their companionship.
’Thankfully, my husband and my family aren’t unreasonable nightmares.’
’If I had to deal with people like that, I’d kick them to the curb without a second thought, even if it meant being alone.’
As for the Su family, it was only after Gu Jiaojiao’s "awakening" that they began to eat meat every day and see a steady income. How could they possibly mind?
Mr. Su, Mrs. Su, and Su Qinchun all wished the Gu Family would stay with them forever.
Everyone had their own thoughts, but they coexisted in surprising harmony, and every meal was a happy occasion.
「The Dong Residence」
After a huge fight the previous night, Dong Yuanyuan didn’t come home for lunch.
She went to the He Family’s home for lunch instead. He Aiguo treated her like a precious treasure, and his younger siblings all fawned over her.
Mr. and Mrs. He were also incredibly welcoming. At the He residence, she was treated like a queen, and she found herself not wanting to go home for days on end.
Her wedding date was set for August 1st, same as Sheng Yueyue, but unlike Sheng Yueyue, she hadn’t "eaten the forbidden fruit" before her wedding.
She still returned to the Dong Family home to sleep each night, though she always came back very late.
Uncle Dong and his son went to the Su family’s house for lunch, as Mrs. Gu had recently started cooking meals.
Dong Lili always ate lunch at school. Aunt Dong, for once, was working overtime—in reality, she just wanted to avoid Dong Yuanyuan’s demands for a dowry.
Second Uncle Dong ate at his work unit, leaving only Mr. Dong, his young wife, and the siblings Dong Qiming and Dong Baozhu at home.
Seeing his once-lively family torn apart by his youngest daughter, Mr. Dong was so angry he wanted to slam his chopsticks down.
With her daughter not around to back her up, Ren Xiaofang could only act meekly, diligently serving Mr. Dong his soup and food without complaint.
She even broke character and put some food into the bowls of Dong Qiming and his sister, which startled Dong Baozhu so much that her hand trembled and her rice bowl fell to the floor.
"S-sorry, Grandma... I didn’t do it on purpose."
"Look at you, getting more and more outrageous! Can’t you just let us have a peaceful meal? Why did you have to go and scare the child!"
Mr. Dong slammed his bowl onto the table, glaring as he reprimanded Ren Xiaofang.
"I was just trying to give Treasure Bead some food! How was I supposed to know she’d get so scared?" Ren Xiaofang said, feeling deeply wronged.
She had always been attractive and hadn’t done heavy labor in years. Even in middle age, she still possessed a certain charm.
Her pitiful expression made Mr. Dong’s heart soften just a little. After all, they had been married for over twenty years.
He then turned and scolded again, "Treasure Bead, your mother has no class, but you were raised in the Dong Family! How can you be so timid?"
"Grandpa, that’s not fair. Grandma never serves us food. How were we supposed to know she’d do that?" Dong Qiming retorted.
"You’ve got some nerve, boy! Is it wrong for your grandmother to put food in your bowl now?" Mr. Dong roared.
"Grandpa, I’m sorry. I was being ignorant," Dong Qiming said, clenching his fists. He lowered his head, seething with resentment, and shoveled rice into his mouth.
’Rage burned within him. That step-grandmother was definitely messing with him and his sister on purpose, getting his sister yelled at by Grandpa.’
’If I had money, I’d take my sister out to a restaurant instead of putting up with this crap at home.’
"Treasure Bead, you have class this afternoon, so eat up," Dong Qiming said, placing a piece of meat in his sister’s bowl.
He took several pieces of meat for himself as well. ’Since I’m being treated this way, I might as well eat my fill.’
’Sigh, my cousin, Second Brother Gu, is so capable. He makes money every day selling those savory crepes.’
’I wonder if he’d be willing to teach me. I’ll go find him this afternoon and ask.’
’If I learn how to make them, I can run a stall during the summer vacation. I could earn enough to take my sister out to eat.’
Seeing his grandson eating as if he were a reincarnated hungry ghost, Mr. Dong scolded him again. "Look at you! You’re just like one of the Li family..."
Dong Qiming shot his sister a look. ’Don’t be scared, Treasure Bead. Just eat up. We have to eat our fill so we don’t lose out.’
And so, the two siblings let Mr. Dong’s scolding go in one ear and out the other. They wolfed down their food, which made Mr. Dong so furious he nearly fell out of his chair.
「Meanwhile」
Gu Jiaojiao drove Mr. Gu, Mrs. Gu, and Eldest Brother Gu to see the new courtyard.
