Chapter 177: Every Cell in the Body Is Screaming to Beat Her
Gu Jiaojiao watched Mrs. Sheng’s hastily retreating figure. "Dad, Shu Ci, what’s wrong with her?"
Su Shuochi narrowed his eyes slightly. "She accused you for no reason, and when you called her out, she got flustered and ran."
Mr. Gu shook his head and sighed. "Jiaojiao, I don’t feel guilty at all anymore. Sheng Yueyue must have inherited her mother’s knack for making unreasonable scenes."
Gu Jiaojiao was speechless.
’Mr. Gu really isn’t a stick-in-the-mud at all,’ she thought. ’He probably won’t feel guilty about Sheng Yueyue anymore.’
’But does he know that his biological daughter has already passed on?’
The past was dust. It was pointless to dwell on it.
With that person gone, judging who was right or wrong was now meaningless.
As for Mrs. Sheng, you couldn’t entirely blame her. Everyone has a stumbling block or two in their heart that they can’t get over.
Her stumbling block was having doted on a daughter who wasn’t her own by blood, even though it wasn’t Gu Jiaojiao’s fault.
But Mrs. Sheng couldn’t take back the affection she had once given, so she could only compensate by spoiling her biological daughter rotten.
Unfortunately, the more she spoiled her biological daughter, the less well-behaved and sensible the girl became. So, Mrs. Sheng could only give Gu Jiaojiao the cold shoulder from time to time to vent her inner frustrations.
Fortunately, Gu Jiaojiao was strong enough to endure it, and on previous occasions, she had accepted the treatment without a word.
She was also thankful that Mr. Sheng had the foresight to sever their ties. Otherwise, she would have been driven to distraction by her so-called adoptive mother.
This time, Gu Jiaojiao had simply stated a fact to Mrs. Sheng: there was no longer any relationship between them.
The reason Gu Jiaojiao was willing to call Mr. Sheng "Dad" was out of gratitude for his decisiveness in severing the formal family connection.
She felt she owed him for that. In the world of adults, there was no kindness without reason, only mutual benefit.
Mr. Gu, having cast off his guilt, felt a weight lift from his shoulders. The more he chatted with his daughter and son-in-law, the happier he became.
The three of them returned to the Su family home to find everyone else laughing and talking. Mrs. Gu then called for everyone to wash their hands for dinner.
Upon seeing Mr. Sheng, Mr. Gu straightened his back and puffed out his chest, greeting him with newfound confidence. "Comrade Sheng, where are you taking Professor Li and Professor Cheng this afternoon?"
"That depends on what Old Gu, Professor Li, and Professor Cheng would like to do. Jiaojiao, you don’t have class this afternoon. Do you want to come with us?"
Mr. Sheng noticed the change in Mr. Gu and assumed he was in a good mood because he had picked up his daughter from school.
He glanced at Gu Jiaojiao, whose eyes were crinkled with a smile, and his own mood lifted considerably.
’My adoptive daughter is always either sweet and well-behaved or radiantly confident. She brings joy to my heart at every moment,’ he thought.
’But my Yueyue is either a pitiful, weeping mess or so arrogant and domineering that every cell in my body screams at me to spank her.’
’Several times, she has nearly driven me mad with anger, but there’s nothing I can do but endure it.’
"Oh, right! Jiaojiao, you don’t have classes this Saturday afternoon. How about we go set up a stall and sell liangpi?"
Mr. Gu asked cheerfully while washing his hands. He used to be the type to look down on money as if it were dirt.
But after seeing the new courtyard house this morning, which he loved, he realized that buying it had cost a lot, and renovating the rooms would cost even more.
"Hmph!" Grandpa Gu snorted heavily.
"Look at you, obsessed with money. Do you have any of a scholar’s integrity left? Is there nothing but money in your eyes?"
"Dad, money may not be everything, but you can’t do anything without it. Eating, clothing, housing—which of these doesn’t cost money?"
"Pride comes before a fall. Often, money and fame will inflate a person’s vanity.
But once that vanity swells to a certain point, it will pop like a bubble, BANG, blowing everything you originally had to smithereens. Don’t let yourself be blinded by wealth."
"Dad, how can you think of your son that way? I just want to earn a little extra money to buy you a nice new desk~"
"You—! Fine. Jiaojiao, shall we go set up a stall this afternoon to sell liangpi and jianbing guozi?" Grandpa Gu conceded.
Gu Jiaojiao was silent for a moment. ’This father-son duo is definitely... related by blood. They just can’t be comfortable unless they’re arguing!’
"Grandpa, Dad, I have important things to take care of tomorrow. This afternoon, let’s all go to Yun Lake to see the scenery and relax."
Su Shuochi had originally wanted to take his wife by themselves, but seeing everyone’s expressions, he knew he couldn’t shake them. So, a group trip to Yun Lake it was.
"Sure! I think Shuo Ci’s idea is great," Li An chimed in loudly.
"If you agree, you agree. Why are you shouting?" Cheng Tao also wanted to see the scenery at Yun Lake.
He wanted to paint the Yun Lake scenery to show his friends.
"I think speaking loudly is great. I used to be afraid of embarrassing myself if I spoke even a little too loudly, but now..."
Mr. Gu said, a little embarrassed.
"Cheng Zhou, you’re getting more and more thick-skinned," Geng Ruixian teased his friend with a grin.
Having found his son, the worry that had plagued him was gone, and his health had visibly improved.
Mr. Gu gave a wry smile. "Hehe~ A person must have principles. If you want to understand reason, read more books. If you want to live happily, you can’t be concerned with face."
"Where did you come up with that brilliant logic? Haha... Don’t tell me Jiaojiao told you that."
Li An’s words sent the whole group into fits of laughter.
Just as everyone was seated and about to pick up their chopsticks, He Shen Yi walked in with Mr. Geng.
He Shen Yi was a frequent guest at the Su family’s home, so everyone was familiar with him. No one thought it was strange for the two of them to suddenly barge in.
Mr. Geng entered the living room and immediately scanned the area for his son. He spotted Geng Ruixian in the crowd at a single glance.
He stood a few steps away, gazing at his son, his eyes growing moist. It felt as if he were so close, yet so far.
Seeing his long-lost father, Geng Ruixian was so emotional he trembled all over.
At first, they just stood there, motionless. Then, they strode quickly toward each other, their faces a mixture of laughter and tears, sweetness and sorrow...
After another round of greetings, everyone enjoyed a pleasant meal.
During the meal, He Shen Yi told everyone that before Mr. Geng had even boarded the train, someone from the Imperial City had already called the relevant authorities in Qing City.
The head of Qingcheng City had personally led a group to the train station to receive Mr. Geng, intending to give him a grand reception.
But Mr. Geng insisted on seeing his son first, so Uncle Dong volunteered to bring him to the Su family’s home.
Uncle Dong knew where Geng Ruixian lived, and He Shen Yi, who had just finished taking Old Sir Xi’s pulse, decided to come back with them to the Su residence for lunch.
Xia Qiuming, a surgeon, was busy with operations and didn’t have time to come to the Su family home for lunch.
After lunch, Gu Jiaojiao and the others set off for Yun Lake. The group soon arrived.
As they looked out, the water glistened under the sun, dotted with sailboats. The elegant mountains and tranquil waters created a landscape of breathtaking charm.
The lake’s surface was perfectly still, and a few wooden boats seemed to glide across a sheet of glass.
The shimmering water was like fine lines on silk, smooth and a tender green. Looking into the distance, the color deepened shade by shade until it became a deep, jade-like green.
The peaks on both banks were reflected upside down in the lake, a uniform verdant green, as if affectionately accompanying the visitors on their journey.
The scenery at Yun Lake was truly beautiful. Although the path was just a dirt road, it had rained a few days prior.
Today was bright and sunny, so the path was neither muddy nor dusty, filled only with the fresh scent of green grass.
