Chapter 198: Saving You
Shen Yanchuan’s expression flickered, but with the fire at the Han residence still raging and the scene in chaos, he was needed to oversee the situation.
He ordered, "Send men to guard Doctor Ye. There must be no mishaps."
Quite a few people heard him, but they didn’t think much of it.
For one, Han Yao’s status was unique; he absolutely could not be allowed to die. For another, Ye Chutang had once done Shen Yanchuan a great service, so it was only natural for him to be protective of her.
Ye Shixian, however, felt a sharp pang in her heart.
’I’ve never seen that kind of expression on Shen Yanchuan’s face...’
’For him to appear here tonight with so many soldiers, it must have been an order from his superiors.’
’Logically, Shen Yanchuan’s focus should be on this massive fire at the Han residence. But since he arrived, it’s obvious the person he’s most concerned about is Ye Chutang.’
Ye Shixian bit her lip.
’Hasn’t Shen Yanchuan heard the rumors about Ye Chutang? If he had, he’d definitely be suspicious of her. He would never be acting like this—’
But Ye Shixian had no time to dwell on such thoughts. Seeing Ye Chutang leave, she knew she had to follow at once. After all, Ye Chutang wasn’t just taking Su Pei’er—she was taking Han Yao too!
’I have to keep a close eye on Han Yao!’
But...
Her gaze drifted sideways in spite of herself. The blazing fire only served to accentuate the man’s handsome and distinguished features.
Just as Ye Shixian was lost in her thoughts, Yun Cheng, who was up ahead, glanced back, a look of mild surprise on his face. "Miss Ye, aren’t you going to follow them? You seemed quite worried about Mr. Han just a moment ago."
Ye Shixian snapped back to reality, instantly mortified. Her face flushed red and then went pale.
She stammered a reply and immediately hurried in the direction Ye Chutang’s group had gone.
She watched Ye Chutang’s group go into a room and moved to follow, only to have the door slam shut in her face with a BANG!
Stunned, Ye Shixian saw Yun Cheng standing guard before the door, a polite yet distant smile on his face.
"A life is at stake, so there can be no interruptions. Please wait here, Miss Ye."
...
Ye Chutang fed Su Pei’er a pill.
"Hold it in your mouth."
She had specially added ginseng to it, enough to keep her hanging on.
Su Pei’er was already on the verge of fainting from the pain.
The young maid was frantic. "Doctor Ye, my lady must have overexerted herself earlier, that’s why... that’s why this is happening! You... you must save her!"
Ye Chutang gazed at the once-beautiful face, now utterly haggard, and let out a soft sigh.
"I’m afraid the baby can’t be saved."
The young maid froze.
Su Pei’er, however, seemed to have already expected this. She gripped Ye Chutang’s hand tightly, offering a tearful smile as she shook her head.
’It’s alright, Doctor Ye.’
’This child never should have been conceived. I was too naive back then. After everything that’s happened, it’s time I woke up.’
Ye Chutang said in a low voice, "Don’t worry. I will save you."
Su Pei’er’s eyes shimmered with tears. Her gaze then shifted, landing on the space behind Ye Chutang—
Han Yao had been brought in along with them and was now lying on a divan not far away.
His eyes remained tightly closed, his face was ashen, and he showed no signs of waking.
Su Pei’er’s gaze swept over the back of his hand, where faint blue veins stood out. She gently closed her eyes, a bitter laugh escaping her.
"I am too ill-fated to bear Mr. Han any children... In the end, it’s all my fault!"
"Don’t say such things," Ye Chutang admonished gently. "Save your strength."
Su Pei’er nodded and obediently fell silent.
The hair on her forehead was soaked with sweat, her face was as pale as paper, and she looked as though she’d been dragged out of the water.
Ye Chutang turned her head and ordered, "Go prepare some hot water."
